Ken, I firmly believe there is a learning curve with new lenses. Usually a new lens will means steps into a area of photography that you haven't ventured into. This takes some getting used to usually. All this means that you'll have to borrow it again some time to learn more!!

Greg,

That sounds like something I need to take you up on.

Cheers

lovely photos everyone.
You sure dig up some stuff greg. Will be keen to check out all this new stuff you guys have got. On that note, i went and bought a tamron 2x converter today. Wish i had it saturday and sunday.
paul, i didn't win the lefe size converter, it went for something like $224 us, they are about that price new!
feng, bring the wife out on the 11th, so she is not bored at home. Plenty of places to sit, or bring a chair if more comfortable than a bench. I can only assume there will be more other halves there that day? and my friend jan will chat to her.

Yeah I read something about that somewhere... although I don't think they're split prism ones are they?

I know one other company that has started developing one for the 5D... will investigate the 5D/1D interchangeable screen thing... I don't think I can live without it now... but will definitely have more of a play :)
You might be right about them not having a split prism for the 5D - not sure about that.
But I do know that the 1 series has them cause I've been looking at the Ec-B screen for my iiN.

Hey Kelsey what's your preference? Texas Instruments or HP are two real big names in calculators.

There's a Calculator Shop in Elizabeth Arcade in the city. I've got a HP48G+, this is is now about 8yrs old and still going strong. My HP is only Reverse Polish Notation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reverse_Polish_notation) which confuses LOTS of people, but simple enough once you are used to it. Newer ones have this as an option. Really depends on what you need it for what you get. I know it may sound silly but it's always a good thing to buy what ever the school recommends (if anything?)- this will means all your friends have it also which helps when you have to work things out. Just my 2c worth.

in case some of you missed it, the next meeting is at the qmsee train tracks on the

They have indicated they would like some photos of the day, which i am sure is no problem. I will get back to you re time, but i think about 9.00 ish or so would be fine. I think I vaguely said that I probably wouldn't be able to go.

1. Wifey's pretty fat with bub.
2. She can't handle long trips, long time standing etc.
3. Usually busy Sunday morning with Church stuff etc.

Thanks for refreshing my memory Tina. I think it needs a defrag (nerdy I know :|... that's what you get for being in IT eh? :| )

I REALLY want to go out for a shoot sometime though... one evening or weekend would be cool... I might go for a wander to the Southbank Parklands, or the park down by the Powerhouse/riverfront etc... That way the wifey can tag along too and go for a stroll :)

Greg_C

Let me relate to you my trip home from work today. My lovely wife and children are currently down the coast (Pottsville, Nth NSW) staying with the in-laws for the weekend, so my lift from the train station is non existant. This means a 2km walk to home. I get off the train to be presented with very large green clouds not all that far away! Lucky for me I'd packed into my Brief Case a water proof poncho. Thinking ahead I place the MP3 player safely into the Brief Case and don the poncho - over my Crumper Backpack. This is my main worry BTW, I don't want to have to test the durability of the water proofness of the camera bag...... at all.

I quickly decide that getting home before the downpour is not an option. Mmmm, what are my options. Ahh hah stop at the Tavern - where I can stay dry and enjoy a cold beer!! I make it just before the main down poor and enjoy a couple of cold beers whilst the rain pelts down. The Runcorn Tavern has just under gone renovations. Whilst in fine weather these are great, they don't stand up as well to the inclement weather with a torrent pouring through the roof of the main dining area. This lasts for about 20min before a break in the weather. Seeing my opportunity I make the last beer disappear and proceed on home.

I have to cross Bulimba Creek on the way home and as usual with a bit of rain it has flooded. Oh well, back to my childhood days and I proceeded to wade through the knee deep water. This obstacle surmounted I safely make it home! The rain gauge shows we had 40ml and this came down in 20mins. Lucky for me my stint on standby finished this morning or I'd be headed back to work I think! Well it's a frozen pizza accompanied by another beer for me now.:D :D

Greg! :( and Paul... I was about to ask the same question ;) Kelsey... where are the pics? :)

My day wasn't nearly so eventful...

Started out sleeping through my alarm by about 1 hour... turn up to work to be peeved off with Network providers... wondering why one of our WA sites has been down (and is still down) for 4 days... I won't even go into the diagnosis etc!!! :|

Then to have another Satellite install go astray with incompetent providors!... what next you say?

Well... with our wonderful spot of much needed rain came unwanted lightning... effectively frying the substation (I think) out at Wacol. This bought down our power... on top of which, our somewhat faulty UPS decided it had had enough and proceeded to single handedly shut down all 18 servers in our central server room... fantastic...

*sigh*... looks like we all have had a wonderful day of sorts... on the plus side, I think our rainwater tank is finally full after 2 weeks of no rain after install ;)

Greg_C

Hi Feng,

I'd boost the colour saturation a little and use levels to lighten the bird a little. I had a real quick go and found you'd have to have a layer mask on the levels adjustment to prevent the white in the background going crazy.

On an other matter, its time for a yah me moment - I just go my xbox media centre up and running with the kind help of a friend. Had an old version of the software so couldn't see my home network properly at first but this was sorted. What is XBox media centre you ask? Well I'm using it to stream mp3s from my pc to my home theatre system. You just scroll through the directory structure where you have your mp3s and use the xbox controller (a bit kludgy) and see everything on the TV.While the mp3s are playing you get those visualisations (like on windoze media player) on the tv screen. Pretty cool. Now to just get rid of the cat 5 cable running from the xbox across my lounge and down stairs to router in the study.

I'm actually toying with the idea of setting up a full home theatre pc sometime this year.

Nick C.
26th of January 2007 (Fri), 02:48
Not too bad, Feng.
I'd say the most detracting element would be the amount of clutter in the background - particularly behind its head. I noticed you were at 70mm for that shot. I think you'll find that a lot of the shots of birds posted here use a longer focal length. Probably mostly in the range of 200-400mm. The extra length will help to blur any background just a little bit more so the details aren't quite as distracting. I'm not saying you need a telephoto lens to shoot birds (it does make it easier though :)) but if you're shooting at 70mm you probably just have to be mindful of how your subject is separating from the background.

I'd also give it a little more sharpening. It's surprising how much that little extra USM can bring to a photo.

wakko
26th of January 2007 (Fri), 08:40
thanks for the comments...

Yeah.. 70 was sorta the limit of the zoom (24-70) I was using at the time... mainly because it was an impulsive shot. I did crop it a bit (about 50%?). Unfortunately I don't have anything more zoomy than that at present. I was kinda close and could've gotten closer, but I guess it wouldn't have been quite the same huh?

@Greg: if you need hook ups for hardware for your HTPC, let me know... I can source most of the silverstone HTPC cases and components etc wholesale...
@Nick: Is there a general consensus as to the amount of USM/sharpening that is applied to a pic? I remember someone saying something like "the usual 200:2:2"!??!

@Nick: Is there a general consensus as to the amount of USM/sharpening that is applied to a pic? I remember someone saying something like "the usual 200:2:2"!??!
I'm not aware of a hard general consensus on USM amounts. If you asked people for their settings you would probably see a set of values emerge which seem more common than others but I couldn't say what they are. You'll also find that the numbers will vary with different subjects and final output (whether the shot is for a wedding album, newspaper or simply web posting for instance). Obviously the in-camera sharpening setting may have a say in the values too.

I think I read once that one idea is to whack the amount and radius up high (leaving threshold at 0) and just slide the radius back until you're please with what you see. Then you can adjust the amount to help reduce any extra halos/artifacts.

I generally start at 300, 0.6-0.9, 0 and adjust to taste from there. If I'm resizing and posting a shot I'll often run it through USM again to give it a little extra crispness (is that word?).

As with the whole of photography it's all very subjective. Nothing but trial and error really.

Mmm... does in camera sharpening affect RAW images though? I thought it disregards the in camera settings.

Mmmm will have a play... not very savvy on photoshop :|

And yup.. agree with you there on the subjectiveness of photography. Might have a play with some of the other shots and see what's going on...

Well, I shoot with everything set to zero/neutral so I'm not too sure. But I believe it remembers the settings so if you view the shot in DPP/Zoombrowser for instance the differences will show. If you then transfer the picture to PS from DPP I think the effect of the settings will be visible in the 16-bit file created for editing.
If opened in a 3rd party RAW viewing/editing program you're probably right that you just see the RAW file without any adjustment.

No Aussie day stuff from me. I just spent the day at home veging. No entries for me either

Last Night was the Aurealis Awards shoot which worked out OK. This morning was the a follow up to the Awards, a open panel at the Metro Arts in town sponsored by the Qld Writers Guild. Both were inside black, barely lit theatres so high ISO stuff was the go.

Today I felt very very very self-conscious shooting. It was a small venue and there would have been about 30 in the audience who were there specifically there to listen to the panel. The noise of the shutter going off was very noisy - at least to me. Add to this my interest in the discussion and I didn't get as many shots as I would have liked to.:o

Hi all.....Anthony L checking in...some of you may know me as anthonyl from the OCAU forums...Im a full time Dad to 6 kids (all under 10) and general all round nice guy! :)

Im in a bit of a quandry at the moment..Im needing to buy a lens..(already have a 70-200 F/4L) and need something like a 17-70 for general work ..maybe macro. As you can imagine I shoot a lot of indoor shots of my kids and the 70-200 is just a little too long at the 70 side.

I also am looking at a 430EX flash....have about $1200.00 to spend all up.

Any suggestions?

Hi again Anthony, whooo 6 kids will keep you busy.

You mentioned a the range 17-70, are you specially looking for a zoom? I really love my 24-105, it works great a good walk around lens but this may be out of the price range. If you are doing lots of indoor work you may be best looking at a small prime say around 30mm or 50mm. The 50mm f1.8 is really cheap and great value, most here on POTN will tell you it's the must have lens. At the shorter end of this you have a Canon 28mm or Sigma 30mm. I've got the Sigma and am happy with it.

wakko

I know for me, this was a similar predicament.

I had a 17-85 and wasn't too happy with it aside from its range.

I had a skim through my photos and found, that most of the time I took pictures between 24 and 70 anyways and was always after wider apertures for the lowish light occasion where I didn't want to use a flash (indoor wedding situation or similar)... so I opted for the 24-70 f/2.8L with the intention to go full frame. I also have a 17-40 f/4L which doesn't get overly used at present, but would be nice on a FF for landscapes etc and is a nice outdoor walkabout lense on a 1.6 camera.

Still learning the 24-70 (bit of a change from my old 17-85).

I'm not really up to speed with non canon lenses, but I'm sure many others here can recommend something for you.

edit: geez that was a slow post on my part :) hahahahah...

As much as I hate hoarding stuff (people who know me would just burst out laughing right there)... I was intending on keeping this to sell with my 30D Enthusiast kit when I go FF (perhaps when the 5D2 (whatever it's gonna be called) comes out.

Don't mind letting you have a test drive before you buy type thing... should be able to pick them up 2nd hand pretty easily off here, ocau or ebay.

I find it distorts a bit too much at 17 to be useful... it's great 24-70 range though... and the f/4-5.6 gets me too with f/2.8 being much nicer for what I need. Reason I didn't go for the 17-55 f/2.8IS was because of the intention to go FF. I hear it's a great lens barring a few dust issues in some cases.

anthonyl
28th of January 2007 (Sun), 03:37
I have read some good reviews from users of the Sigma 17-70 f/2.8-(something or other)..that would be a reasonably inexpensive lens (around the $500.00 mark) I think.

Hey Paul, Drake is a great little community, it's not all that far from where I am. Ever seen the Drake Village Voice? A great little read, always has some great stories and jokes in it! My other half and I drove through there not too long back on the way to rover park, saw some great photo ops on the way, but didn't stop for any :( Great capture there too BTW!

Nope! Never seen it and I've been going there for 27 years! I'll have to look for it next time I'm there. If you drive through again...the old Laurie's place is interesting to photograph...

Hi Paul,
I have seen that house before!
I was in that area September 05, when the trees were in bloom and that house was buzzing with bees. I had the most delightful chat with the lady who owns the property when I popped into to ask if it was ok for me to roam those trees taking photos. She thought I was a greenie at first and I just said those trees are gorgeous and I want to play amongst them.

Paul, somehow the Drake Village Voice makes it to my sunday workplace in lismore (bunnings) and I have a good read and chuckle. I saw it once at the old petrol station in town for a huge sum of 50c!

Yes Helen, that house isn't in Drake but on the Tooloom Creek Falls Road nearer Urbenville. I took the photo on the way home as a favour for my sister-in-law who has a picture of it when it was standing. It actually had an alarming/comical lean on it and has obviously collapsed since then. I'm trying to get the "before" off her so I can show a comparison.

I like your series of photos. You were lucky to get Mt Lindesay without cloud hiding the top. Your star trails are very well done. I also took a photo of the petrol pump! I presume you stayed at Mt Barney Lodge? Did you climb Edinburgh Castle?

Here's my take on the petrol pump...

Nice photos guys. I got to get out like this myself a bit. So much to see if you just make the effort. Trouble is stopping the kids from complaining about the drive.

Speaking of kids, here are mine. I was just packing my camera gear away when they and the wife arrived home yesterday. These were a couple of quick snaps with the 85 F1.8. Wish the 50 had of been on because I could have used a little extra distance.

Yeah Photo Continental is one of the bigger camera/photo supply shops in Brisbane.

Not particularly cheap in my opinion, but if you haggle them in store, they can be good. Lots of range too. What are you after?

Here is my EXCELLENT EXPERIENCE WITH PHOTOCONTINENTAL........

I bought my 400D from Photocontinental last November and from the outset didnt feel right about the photos I was getting. I thought it might have been the kit lens..so I sold those and bought other lenses. Images were still not making me "happy".

So last week I went back to Photocontinental with camera in bag and told my story.

A kind fellow there spent a few hours with me, he took several new 400D boxes..opened them all up and we went throught them 1 by 1 and compared images....sure enough my camera was the worst one of the bunch..images were soft and out of focus a lot of the time...not by much mind you but enough for me to notice. (He said most people would not have noticed).

So right there and then he took the best of the bunch and boxed it up and gave it to me and sent me on my way.

The new one takes photos that are a lot sharper and clearer than the first one I had.

THATS WHAT I CALL SERVICE!!! http://forums.overclockers.com.au/images/smilies/smile.gif

I would highly recommend them!!!

And yes..if you can get a better price elsewhere (and can tell them where) they will price match! TALK TO JASON BUCK and tell him Anthony Lee sent you...you will get great service...(no I do not work there).lol

Feng, my list is as follows....... 5D, 24-70 2.8, 70-200 2.8 IS and maybe the 17-55 2.8 IS. Just a wish list at the moment until my business sells but afterwards I would like to study photography and become a professional photographer so I'd like to set myself up with the gear.

Anthony, sounds like they are customer service is high on their list. Glad to hear your 400D problems were sorted out. If I do shop there I'll be sure to ask for Jason and mention your name!

BTW: If anyone in Brissie is interested in picking up a MINT CONDITION 70-200 f/4L complete with lens caps / lens hood / lens protector filter / suede carry bag / box (all mint) for around $770.00...let me know... Im upgrading to either a 2.8 or an f/4L IS...not sure which one to get...
I can personally vouch for the 2.8 IS. It's a lovely lens if you can stretch you budget that far.

PC's aren't always the cheapest but as said before they will bargain a bit. I bought my 30D from them for a very good price - actually it was the very first they sold.:D They have a great range on the floor, I love to just go over there and browse around, trick is to just window shop when you really shouldn't be buying. I'm only 15min drive from them so the temptation is always there. All that being said I've bought my expensive lenses from D-D Photographics in Sydney they were just that bit cheaper than local.

Hey Ken!

I like your website a real lot! The animations and presentation is great. The photos were a bit slow to load, but I think that's just my computer:(

I have no useful C&C to offer other than you need LOTS MORE PHOTOS:D

I love photos of old rusty cars/trucks/tractors and your old Chevy is great. (I think it might actually be a 1929 Model A Ford Pickup, but I've never seen one with wheels like that. Most had wire spoke wheels so I'm probably wrong.)

Greg,

I wish I could claim to be that smart!

The photogalleries and from a piece of freeware called "picklish" it does a great job but doesn't give you a lot of flexibilty - so we will see how it goes.

The main web page structure is based on a template available from my web hosting service in USA.

I used to do my own stuff in Frontpage but now want to move to an easier setup so I can concentrate on getting the images up there.

hey vicki, what did u buy?? happy birthday!!

quick rundown on my trip.... bit of a learning curve to go back to shooting with a p and s, so a lot of my photos weren't that great. I still don't regret leaving my slr at home though. Smooth sailing the whole trip, though today i am very tired and the house keeps rocking!! Noumea, over-rated and over-expensive! Lifou was very nice, and got some nice shots from there, great snorkellikng, but once again, too expensive. Port Vila was great, we had a driver for 6 hours, and he took us all around. We got to walk through a ridgi didge village, and i made a donation to the school there as well, got the kids to pose for me, and ended up with a most beautiful photo of cute little girl there, ate at the local markets yummm, checked out some resorts and lifestyles of the rich. Partied hard that night, so the next day was a real let down, i was totally bored. Obviously got out of bed on the wrong side (eventhough you can only get out one side!). Friday better, and got up very very early sat morn to watch coming into brisbane, and got the most awesome sunrise!! That was probably when i missed my camera the most, but still got some sweet shots. Back to work for me this week, so you will have to wait a few days before i can get on the computer to do some photos for you.

justin, i put photos in for the potn book, so will just have to wait and see if they liked them enough.

Markets! What markets?

Paul,

About 18 months ago I started selling my images at markets (normally I do about 1 a month). It doesn't bring in big money - I won't be retiring on it but it does give me money for photography gear. :)

I use my images together with old window frames to create image stories.

I have tried various markets - Forest Lake, Mt Tambourine - but lately have been doing the ones at Chandler.

I also go to the Heritage fair down in Rathdowny (April 1st) which makes for a good market but also a good photographic opportunity.

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone, really looking forward to giving this 400 and my legs a good workout. Meat0, the only falls i can think of are past Samford going up the mountain to Mt Glorious.Or up what the locals call the goat track between samford and Mt Nebo, but thats more bushy than rainforest with lots of snakes. But we need some rain first.
Cheers Ricky.

update...sorry guys, i just re=read the invitation, and it says from 11.00am, so don't come early! The entrance is not very obvious, so make sure you look for the (rather small) qsmee sign. The tracks are set back from the road.

ricky, we have an outing at the qmsee track (model steam trains that you can ride) out warner way (northside) this sunday. If you can come, send me your email via pm, so i can send you the invitation details.

I'm back. :D I didn't really go anwhere, but I haven't had time to come on much (school, beach, soccer, homework, assignments ).

I've had a quick can, but to make sure I didn't miss anything important, can someone please give me a few notes? :)

hi all,

received my sigma 17-70 and have been messing with it and after unhappy "real life shots" i did some focus chart tests and it seems my lens is back focusing quite badly. So im wondering if there is a sigma repair place in Australia or is it better to send it back to the retailer for repairs?

kelsey, don't forget this sunday, about 11.00am at the train place. I think i sent you the invite with instructions, let me know if i need to send it again.

reece!! hey stranger, how was your trip o/s ? can you come on sunday? Sorry about your lens, can't help, but maybe when the others log on again, they can.

don't forget guys, for those coming on sunday, you need closed in shoes to ride the trains. They do have some there you can borrow if you forget.

Tambourine has a couple with water still .... I think. Time for some research I think.Natural Arch usually has water flowing through it and is quite photogenic. But it is a long way to go. But it is very scenic. But there aren't many places to eat. But it's close to the Gold Coast. But not that close really. But....:D

There's always south of the border (nudge nudge, wink wink) ;) plenty of pretty waterfalls here. We're in the 3% of the state that's not in draught!

Minyon falls would have to be the most well known. Then there's the spots the locals know about, there's protestors falls, whian whian falls, dalwood falls.

There's quiet a few, not sure on the name on them all. I'll have to ask my father in law, he's the bushwalking king and knows all the good spots!
