For Tafe today, we went to this guys little studio at Annerley.
http://www.porfyri.com.au/
It was great, he spoke to us for about an hour and a half about how he got into the industry and how it was a struggle for his first couple of years and just things like that. He also showed us slideshows of his Commercial, Portrait and Wedding Photography. Very inspirational :D .

On his website, in the architecture gallery, 2nd row 2nd from the right is where I get my hair cut :D

400 posts since I read this thread last Thursday. My lord, we can yack. :p

Kinnon - I'll also offer my sympathies on getting a job at Coles. What's worse was I went from Coles (registers) to Woolies (produce)... anyone else think I might be a glutton for punishment?

Don't speak too soon. There's a reason the likes of KKR and Tesco pulled out of the bid for Coles ;)
I second that. :p

Justin - Word of advice: make sure you have another job lined up before you leave. I spent about six months unemployed whilst trying (admittedly on and off) to get another job. I ended up at Woolies 'cos I was starting to get desperate... lol

Spam - You're not the only Woolies person here. I work in Produce at the Stafford store. Where (and in what position) do you work? Also, 50mm is usually where my lens is at for street photography. My 3000N is a full-frame camera though, mind you.

Nice shot, David. I had a good laugh when I saw it. :) Same with Feng's. Everybody else's pics are pretty neat, too.

Greg - Are you a beanie person too? :D

I was down in Wollongong over the weekend for a miniature train meet at one of the clubs down that way. Had a blast, though it rained a lot mind you. I even managed to get to Ballina on the way down and coming back - though I was there for a total of half an hour so all I saw was a Hungry Jack's and the main road. Damn 50km/h towns and 40km/h roadworks... would have halved travel time if it was either 100 or 70 the whole way.

I was looking forward to a meet and I see that it was well attended - pity I couldn't come. I have my own recent scary person incident. I was at a local park the other week taking a picture of a gazebo and there was this guy playing golf. I was going to wait until the guy was out of my shot but he still threatened me when I was setting it up beforehand. I walked over to a seat and waited until he'd hit the ball down the other end of the park. There's a sign there saying golf is prohibited in the park - anyone else smell a guilty conscience?

Oh one quick question - how many replies per page do you have it set to? I'm on 25 per page (like deviantART) and I'm up to page 121. I've just read 15 pages of this, 7 emails, only God knows how many messages on deviantART... all after a 14-hour drive... oh my I'm buggered.

Justin, maybe if you put a subliminal messages warning on the first page then we don't have to tell every single person that joins the thread- then they'll be able to see it when they read the first page. Though if we're all quite happy to go along as usual it's quite fine by me. :)

Damm I knew I shouldn't have picked up Feng's 5d on Monday or hell even Three's 30D because all I am thinking is damm I really need a new camera. Though I would go the 5d for sure.

Then I also want to get the 50mm 1.4 since I am doing so many concerts now and that extra stop and better focusing would come in very handy.

damm those messages!!!!

Carjo - We have done our shopping at Stafford Woolies for the last upteen years. You know Emma in Bakehouse? She is best friends with my brother as is Dom on checkouts.

(I blame Kinnon ;) she started it with her 5D :) *grin*

you could've taken my 50mm to have a play... see how you like it etc... I don't use it that much... and when my new focus screen and contax converter comes, I'd use it even less. I also have a "borrowed" 85 f/1.2 for portraits now... 50mm becomes a bit short on FF.

Good afternoon here, slept for about 1hr and went out and did some macro work in the garden. I got a Blue-banded bee (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?p=3368326#post3368326) for the first time!! I also discoverd a jumping spider and go a couple of it. I'm sorry I missed last weekend's festivities - it sounds like it was an interesting day! I was out of town for the weekend - only got back yesterday.

... and now I'm off work today - sick as a dog! Probably with the same thing as Greg's little one. I blame all the people coughing and spluttering around me on the plane. It's not much fun! I'm defintiely feeling a bit sooky and wishing my girlfriend didn't live 1,500km away so she could look after me :)

Anyway, it's given me a bit of a chance to reorganise my photography directory structure and get Lightroom happening in a semi-coherent way, so it's not a total loss of a day.

Here's one photo to share - just a quick B&W fiddle with a pic of a friend's son from last weekend:

I think the thing that finally sold me on Lightroom though was being able to edit a photo in photoshop and then see the change reflected back in the Lightroom library and be able to stack the edited version(s) onto the original RAW.

I'm not sure if IMatch can do that kind or not (it may be able to? - I didn't play with it much), and it sounds simple - but it's really, really handy.

Mmm not sure as I don't use a lot of RAW (ducks for cover). With all of the RAW I've done I've saved it back to jpg from Photoshop and IMatch sees the new file and add it to the DB. I'll have a play to see how this would work, mind you I don't have LR.

Wow Sam, that dragonfly is fantastic! Great work :)

I just hate how lightroom's just so damn slow :| I'm finding it good in terms of speed, but I've only recently upgraded my PC, so it's getting a fair bit of hardware thrown at it - Core 2 Quad 6600 CPU, 4GB of RAM, running 64-bit Vista.

I hate that too, and it insists putting my photos from a certain day into a folder for the next day when it imports my rar files off the card
Heh, yeah ... I don't use it to download my cards, I've been using Downloader Pro for a while, so I'm still using it. I just import into Lightroom from the current location (where Downloader Pro puts them for me), so it doesn't move/rename any of my files.

I haven't seen LR use more than 2GB, but it's certainly not hard for Photoshop to use more than that. I'm seriously considering moving up to 8GB of RAM, purely for Photoshop ... RAM is so cheap at the moment, and once you get over 4GB of RAM Photoshop starts using RAM as it's scratch disk, which would be nice.

Ebay and I have been having fun today with them :) I picked them up here - Mighty World Kenko Tubes (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Kenko-Auto-Extension-Tube-Set-DG-12-20-36-for-Canon-NEW_W0QQitemZ280122773564QQihZ018QQcategoryZ30059Q QrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) by using the USA listing you save about $5/10 :D, those pesky people trying to charge Aussies more for the same thing

Now I just have to decide which teleconverter to get first - I am going Kenko again abut 1.4x vs 2x decisions decisions decisions.

Now that's a nice little B&W you have there...a great conversion. Which of the 1,768 conversion methods did you use? Oooo...and how's the EIZO monitor going? It's actually just a desaturated version of a "Lomo" treatment (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=275545), which seems to be all the rage at the moment. I thought I'd try it out. I figured a high contrast process might lend itself to a simple desaturation, and it seemed to work out OK.

The EIZO actually has to go back to Kayell at some stage soon! Its backlight is leaking on the bottom left hand corner, which is rather annoying to say the least! Not very happy about it, particularly as I think I'll struggle to fit it in my car ....

Lovely shot, Paul. You've captured fantastic DOF in all of the scapes I've seen of NZ from you. How do you decide where to focus for your landscapes? Do you use the hyperfocal distance?

Great shot too, Mat. I really like the cool, almost metallic-like feel, the Lomo actions give photos. It definitely doesn't work with all pics though. Or at least that's what I found.

Well Nick...since I had two pretty good tutors looking over my shoulder, I focussed where they told me to:D (which was 2/3 of the distance to the horizon)....but at f/22 on a 10-22mm lens...does it really matter? Looking at my "Hyperfocal Distance Chart (http://www.dofmaster.com/)" though...it should have been about 2 feet!

Thanks John...you sound like you might have been there before. Magic is right.

I grew up in the South Island and spend more time in Central Otago in the summers than anywhere else in NZ - More Wanaka than Wakatipu but we used to drive over to Q'Town and Arrowtown a lot (apricots and cherries from the roadside stalls were to die for) and spent a lot of time around Te-Anau, the Hollyford and Milford.

Hmmm... when's pay day... wait... must... resist... subliminal messages... lol :p

So there I was today, thinking... 50mm + 12mm tube at 1.6 crop = ...100mm (35mm equivalent)? So that means you could just about use a nifty fifty and a 12mm tube as a telephoto then, as long as you're on a crop camera? Either that or I'm still to get the grasp of this 1.6 crop business

wakko
13th of June 2007 (Wed), 08:49
1.6 crop is exactly what you said... 1.6x the focal length... so 50mm becomes 80mm effectively... 100mm Macro = 160mm Macro.

Tubes works different afaik... I thought it's more magnification... not 100% sure how it's calculated.

Teleconverters are different... that's like 1.4x or 2.0x teleconverters...

-spam-

Tubes works different afaik... I thought it's more magnification... not 100% sure how it's calculated.

I dont know how the distances etc are calculated, but all extension tubes are, are hollow tubes that put the lens further away from the body of the camera, allowing it to focus closer

Carjo
13th of June 2007 (Wed), 09:16
hmmm... ok then. Basically all I'm after is a cheap way of getting focal lengths in the vicinity of 70-100mm. Sure, my 75-300 works alright, though it's a lacking a lot in the bokeh department.

wakko
13th of June 2007 (Wed), 09:29
I thought the problem with teles is you tend to lose a stop with 1.4x and 2 stops on a 2.0x? not sure... there's a thread all about teleconverters here: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=41922

Carjo
13th of June 2007 (Wed), 09:35
My understanding is that with teles not only is the focal length multiplied, but the maximum possible aperture is multiplied as well. I find even f/3.5 is a pain, but f/5 or f/7? If you're taking photos of someone on the top of the Story Bridge (refering to a previous teleconverter discussion) in the middle of a bright, sunny day then it's perfectly fine, but for most of the subjects and conditions that I come across I don't think it would be worth it.

That's correct.

The 1.4x TC costs you one stop (and a little image quality on most lenses). The 2.0x TC costs you two stops (and a fair bit more image quality on most lenses).

well guys, i have taken a big step here, and hope it pays off. I am starting up a "mobile photo courses " business, teaching the very basics of "knowing your camera and understanding what it can do", basic rules in photography, basic photo manipulation in post production. I have been very busy putting my lessons together, and working out the nitty gritty on how to get it off, and keep it off the ground. So i have to come up with a name, and i was thinking of "Tina's Mobile Photography". Not very original, can any of you think of something? I have to get my flyers out asap, as i have my first customers next sunday. I am so sick of doing my clothes business, i want this to replace it. Hmm i always thought it was better to have the subject in the middle. See you learn something new everyday.

Take a look at this article on the Rule of Thirds (http://digital-photography-school.com/blog/rule-of-thirds/)

Hi all, here's another image from Monday's wander about town. It's a Guitar Soloist (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?p=3374947#post3374947) I found in a corner of ANZAC square. KL and I got a few shots of him. Hey Paul does it fit your music theme?:p

Stuart an other thing to do in line with the Rule of Thirds is to shuffle your crop box around the image to make sure you have it in the best place ie what is it excluding and what is it including.

I love the b/w version of it.

While we are on the topic of photos from monday, here is one i got of the Balloon Guy (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?p=3375076#post3375076) in the mall. Decided to try something different as far as colours went. Also tried a square format crop.

... teaching the very basics of "knowing your camera and understanding what it can do"...
I'll need this when my cam arrives. I'll have to book a session ;)

Sounds good, Tina. Wish you all the best with it.

I'm thinking you need something about it being a course/lesson in your name. To me, Tina's Mobile Photography sounds more like you're more of a mobile photographer. Maybe:

TINA'S MOBILE FOTOCLASS
"Bringing the basics of digital photography right to your door"

no, definitely not. Have you heard of the rule of thirds? even though rules are made to be broken, in general, you don';t plonk your subject dead center, compositionally looks much better off center, on a "thirds".

edit, oops, i see it already mentioned

never mind about 2 weeks 2 late, enjoy your course.

  oh god, there is one in every crowd!! very funny nick! But i definitely like your suggestion. There was something about mine i just didn't like, but my brain is in overdrive, and can't think creatively at the moment.

Oh god, now i have to get a web site up and running, Help! I know this was hashed out before, but to save me trawling through 50 odd pages or more, can anyone make a quick suggestion for the "easiest" one?

love it paul, congrats. Glad i am not in a grade at bcg, i'd never win anything.

Thanks Tina,
I wish I wasn't in A grade. I know that I'm nowhere near the ability of the other club members in this grade. Hmmmm....I might ask to be downgraded.

Good luck with the teaching...there's a lot of ppl out there who want to learn...I'm sure you'll do well.

Well I have finished going through my photos and am now in the process of uploading them all. At the moment I have only uploaded the flower shots :)They will all get dumped into this set on Flickr - POTN Big Day Out (http://www.flickr.com/photos/helenpalsson/sets/72157600355177271/detail/).

Greg, I was quite unsure of your lens when I was using it but when I saw them on the computer, damm that is one lens and a half!

If I was you I'd just run with it to be honest. :p If the person who graded you thinks you're that good then heck... perhaps you are. In the last couple of months you've received umpteen merits and a DPI of the night... I think that too says something. :)

Hey guys, just found this Brisbane thread and after about a week I think I've read all 200 and something pages. *deep breath*

All of the pictures here are fantasitc and you all seem like nice people with a great sense of humour.

Im quite new to photography although I did do a course in HS and my partner one year of a photo degree, but it just become too expensive and it fell by the way side.

After watching the exciting progress of digital photography for a few years we've finally made the plunge and bought a 400D and a 50mm 1.8
At the moment I'm reaquainting myself with it all, the new technology (especially photoshop - where do I start?) and just taking lots of pictures.

I look forward to eventually going to one of your outings and meeting you all.

Hi Yuztoo welcome. Big gold star for reading all of our ramblings. So a warning about the subliminal messages is not needed?;) Looks like Tina might be able to help you out with her new business. The other thing that helps is to join a club and just being here on POTN you'll learn heaps. I know I have.

Look forward to meeting you on one of our outings.

What does sell mean? :|

Although, I did part with my 17-85 to david... but that was part of the enthusiast kit, AND I can't use the EF-S mount anymore... (trying hard to justify the sale :( )

i am in the same boat now too greg, too many lenses for my bag. I'll have to have another browse at photocontinental i think. I was also going to buy the lowpro slingshot, but it just didn't feel comfortable. I was going to use it for when i was only going to carry a small number of lenses, and so i didn't have to keep taking off the backpack. that gets sooo annoying, but...don't know, just didn't feel right, but if i can't find anything else....

I need a new bag too. Can I come shopping? I'm actually eyeing the Lowepro range now for it's tripod holder. But I love crumpler bags :( DAMMIT... bring back the Brian's Hot Tub series with decent tripod holder :(

Heya Tina. I have my own VPS (as I probably mentioned before). I register my .com/.net/.org type domains with www.godaddy.com (http://www.godaddy.com) but I do my AU ones through jumba. I don't care for their DNS stuff, and use my server for everything like that.

With web development, dreamweaver definitely is the most user friendly. It really depends on how advanced you want to go. It's also got very clean code generation and simple site synchornisation. It's much cheaper to buy dreamweaver wholesale, (about 30% cheaper) so let me know if you want me to have a look at that for you.

With domain hosting, I'm not sure to be honest. I'd offer you space on my server, but I'm waiting on my provider to upgrade my mail system, so unless you want to be stuck with POP mail, I'd check elsewhere... I think Kinnon's using GoDaddy's hosting too. It'll always be cheaper in the US anyway, but if you'd like some space to play around first while you decide where you want to host, let me know, and I can set you up with a subdomain under my domain... and/or you can purchase your domain and park it, and point it to me while you find a suitable host. Up to you :)

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome.

The mobile photography course sounds like a great idea.
Have you settled on a name yet?
If you haven't, I believe a name like "Mobile Photography Classroom" or "Photography School on Wheels" would better describe to potential clients what it is that you are "selling".
I'm actually considering going to do the BA of Photography at Griffith, as I've always wanted to go to Uni but just never found a course that might motivate me enough.

In regards to the gear, I don't do anything by halves and although I have to work with a small budget I have my eyes on a few pieces already, mainly a Sigma 17-70, a tripod and the most pressing item, an external HDD as this 60GB one in my PC just isn't going to cut it.

I need to once again discover what my photographic calling is and then build my kit around that. The abstract appeals to me and I can't wait to have a grasp on Photoshop to be able to manipulate images to my liking.

Thanks again for all the welcomes.

PS: thanks for the offer of more links to read but I think I'll, pass?

I was considering doing that this year, but my OP wasnt good enough :(

Still think that im learning more without it anyway.

Don't worry my OP was pretty dismal too, but now that I'm over 21 I can apply through alternative means.
One thing I will be doing is sitting the STAT test with QTAC to increase my "academic entry score" or something to that affect.

I'm nervous just thinking about it, I haven't sat a test in over 7 years.

I understand that photography is very hands on and most people pick up the knowledge through years of experience.
My reasoning for wanting to go is two fold.
One, because I think University is the type of place I'll fit right in and I want to push myself beyond my comfort zone.
Two, I'll have access to equpiment I otherwise will not have for many years (studio, lighting, darkroom etc)

Good points. At least you dont need a portfolio to get into the griffith course. That was one thing preventing me from applying for other similar courses at a few tafes as well. This time last year i had nothing in teh way of a portfolio.

Hi Yuztoo. Welcome

I'd imagine another possible advantage in doing a uni course would be networking. Surely you're bound to come across people who may be able to get you some of that invaluable hands-on work experience.

I considered a photo degree a few years back. However the 3.5 years spent (/wasted) finishing a degree, that I'll never use, kind of soured the taste of more uni time for me.

HelenThura

aaah that fantastic thing called Uni.

Nick, what area was your degree in?? Was it a fantaboulous Arts one like mine???

Paul/Pual - at least I didn't add any extra letters... Do you recall seeing that thing a while back about how we read??
Cacnhes it deons't tkae mcuh too raed tihs. As long as the first and last letter in the right place, the brain knows what word it is.
