Paul/Pual - at least I didn't add any extra letters... Do you recall seeing that thing a while back about how we read??
Cacnhes it deons't tkae mcuh too raed tihs. As long as the first and last letter in the right place, the brain knows what word it is.
haha... that's how I read one of my friend's emails. :D Poor guy... :(
As of yesterday I'm doing a Bachelor of Justice @ QUT. Irony is I could already be half way through it if I hadn't made the impromptu decision to become a teacher. What a waste of time that was...

Nick, what area was your degree in?? Was it a fantaboulous Arts one like mine???
You know, I probably would've enjoyed that more. At least you can sort of pick different areas of study for different subjects.
But no, not Arts.
First year was spent studying (and I use that term lightly) Law. Decided to change to Business Management in the second year but could only take 6 months of the useless, theoretical nonsense that those subjects contained. So I ended up switching to and graduating with a prestigious ... wait for it ... Bachelor of Commerce! If any of you people have trouble sleeping, I can not recommend more highly the study of Commerce.
Anyway, when I graduated I was still pushing trolleys at Coles, so I'm hoping I can at least lay claim to once being the most overqualified trolley-boy! Of course, since then I've moved up the ladder and am now pushing things around inside the store :D
Well, I bet that answer was a lot longer than you expected. I'll pause for a breather ...

lol I hear you on teaching. At the end of my first year of Asian Studies I was accepted into teaching (primary), photography (QCA) and Asian Studies/Law. I did the teaching thing for a year and whilst I would like to be a teacher the stuff you do at uni is just polly waffle so I went back to Asian Studies as I may as well finish one degree first.
Are you aiming to go into State/Fed Police with your course Rob?

Oh come on guys, Engineering all the way. Rar rar rar and all that cr@p. :p I was accepted into Uni to do a B Sc but had already accepted a Electrical Apprenticeship with SEQEB as it was back then. I then went back and studied and extra maths subject (at Corinda:p ) during my 2nd yr apprenticeship as I was too late to apply to QTAC for the course I wanted. I then did a Ass. Dip in Elect Engineering --- and stopped there. B Eng would be another 6yrs part time for me for no more pay than I am on now, unless I moved from technical to management. Management is not my thing at the moment, I'll leave that to others. :D I've done a few subjects towards a Grad Dip in Electricity Supply but I'm unlikely to ever finish this as I only do the ones works pays for.

I remembered you had gone there, hence the jibe.;) Actually really enjoyed it there. Two nights a week for a whole year gave me year 11 & 12 maths 2 (super hard maths:(), as it was back then. Best thing I ever did before Uni. made the maths I had to do at Uni a little more bearable.

3000N's are full frame :P
mmm if I was a bit more fastidious with my study during high school and did Maths C and Physics I would have done an Engineering or Mathematics degree. I did Arts subjects like Legal Studies and Modern History instead. I still would have done Legal Studies - it's one of the most useful subjects ever, even if you don't go into Law/Justice as a profession - though I almost failed Modern History on my senior certificate and I doubt I'll use anything I learnt in IPT again in my professional career. Speaking of which, does anyone know how I can get a cheap copy of that Microsoft database program thing (I think it's MS Access)

*off topic rant*
I have been seeing the ads everywhere about the upcoming Tori Amos tour and for the past week not much else has been in Winamp with the new album on very high rotation. Tickets go on sale to the public on Monday but I thought gee it is not hard to guess the presale code word (posse) let me get the ticket tonight instead.
The price though is $119.90 for all seats at all venues in Australia - The Brisbane show is at the convention centre and it doesn't matter if you are stitting two rows from the front or along the top row they want $119.90. How on earth can they justify that price? Grrr really angry Helen here.
The dodgey thing is that I could go see her in the Frankfurt Opera Hall which is a pretty swish place and get decent seats for about AU$80 or run of the mill standing GA tickets in London for about AU$60. This is so rorted. I am not happy jan.
I would pay $90-100 tops but $119.90 is just . grrrr.
*end off topic rant*

Yeah, that annoys the hell out of me as well, as far as im concerned no concert is worth more then $100. Im dreading the day Dream Theater get here and ask for like 150 per ticket.

Helen I stopped going to major concerts years ago when the price got more than $60. I did have gold pass tickets to Madonna at SCG though - got em for free:p, we (Tracey & I) just had to do the air fairs and accommodation. People should vote with their wallets.
Edit -- Silly me forget to say we (2 adults 2 kids) are going to War of the Worlds at QPAC for $90 a ticket.

Ok I need some help here. I went to Photo Continental today to buy 2 lens'.I did my usual trick of printing out the page from Discount Digital Photographics and took it with me. Every other time they've matched or bettered the price but this time the best could do was $300 more for one lens and $200 for the other. I thought it was just one guy so I asked another and he was the same. I'm not in a huge rush (not going overseas again until December but I would like them sooner rather than later. Don't know if I should get them anyway, or try an internet shop. What the general consensus when it comes to lens shopping?

I've never had them change their minds but it usually makes me feel better to rub it in their faces that they don't have things as easy as they used too. Petty aren't I.

I think in this situation, you might be better off just getting them from the net.

Shay I bought the 70-200 2.8L IS from B&H on their PSJan sale for a VERY good price. I had no problems with them, but I did have to do a telegraphic transfer to their account. My bank charged me $30 for this. If you don't want to do this, just get it from Adorama. They accept credit card payment, after verification. They ship via USP and UPS will charge you GST (Aus Customs charge they pass on to you.).
The 24-70mm I bought from THIS GUY AT SOUTHPORT (http://www.camerasdirect.com.au/)
I've never had any probs with him either and I see him at our camera club each month.
Hmmmm....these are the "ideal" wedding lenses. Are you going to start shooting weddings?

16th of June 2007 (Sat), 02:28
Shay, if you're interested, I should be putting in an order from B&H in the next month or so if you wanted to put your lenses on the same order. Not sure if there's much advantage in doing so but I'd think you'd save at least a little on shipping costs.
I'll let everyone else know when I'm about to go ahead with it in case you want to tack something on. And as long as it's only relatively small/light you won't have to pay anything for shipping obviously.

i am in the same dilema shay. I asked photoc. for their price, and the best they can do for the 100-400 is $2300, no-where near the $2029 on the net that i told them about. The only thing that concerns me, and i need clarification on this, is that the cheaper one could be a grey market item, so if it needs fixing down the track, it goes back to them, and then they forward it on for fixing. Not sure if you could take it straight to canon to get repaired. I bought 2 of my lenses off the net (one lot dd photographics, or what ever they call themselves), no problems at all. I'm not so sure i would get my lens from o/s, if it arrives with a problem, it has to go all the way back. Most folks i know have not had a problem, but murphy is my best friend, and i do recall in another thread someone having problems. Without gst, it would cost aprox $1700+ anyway, add gst, customs fees, etc, and my lens is not so much cheaper after all. I will try photocontinental again, this time by phone, and with my customer number, and see if they can do better. You would have got the same price even with a different sales person, because they are supposed to check with the big boss on how far they can go down. Funny thing is they matched my macro lens to the net price. As greg said, a bit of a hit and miss affar.

Well, if they come off hold/become available and you want to grab some stuff just let me know. The only catch is that the total will be over the GST-free threshold.

I am hoping for mother England that my filters comes back in stock by monday as I want it for Sunday as I am heading up to Mackay to do the Mackay Highlands Great Walk (http://www.epa.qld.gov.au/parks_and_forests/great_walks/mackay_highlands/long_walks/), somehow I think my chances are pretty slim.
Tina - all Canon lenses come with an international warranty and Canon Australia will service them.
Nick C.
16th of June 2007 (Sat), 03:05
Tina, the cheaper prices of lenses you see (such as Discount Digital, etc) will be grey market stuff.
Canon do offer international warranty on their lenses but I understand that the lenses must be sourced from the country in which they're sold for that warranty to be valid.
Which is why I believe you're right about having to return them to the retailer for repair - not Canon.
However, if you buy US stock lens from a US seller (such as B&H) you can still take that lens straight into Canon Aus. for repair under warranty.
wakko
16th of June 2007 (Sat), 06:59
Tina: I know all lenses have international warranty and will come with a card to indicate so... but as Nick said, there's something about returning to the retailer.
I know however that Grey bodies have AU warranty... if the place you purchased from in AU has an ABN and a street/storefront address. i.e. dd-photographics, photobuff etc. If in doubt, you can always pay a little bit for a 5 year mack warranty or similar on lenses/bodies.

Great water drops Greg. Looks like you need a faster speed. What was the shutter speed for those?....Hmm...wait a minute...if the flash is the only illumination...it should "freeze" the drop no problems. Mystery needing solving;)

Thanks for the comments on the water drops. The SS was about 1/200, the motion blur you are seeing is due to the shutter and flash firing at different times (I think). The flash freezes the motion at a given point but the shutter remains open. Need to practice a lot more with this.

Nice collection of pics, Helen. I agree with Paul about the orange and blue one - very nice.
Have I seen any shots that were taken from up in the Sofitel from anyone?
Greg, I think it's just the direct sun you have to avoid if you're shooting these slower speeds outside. In #3 the drop is frozen and the pic looks to be more in the shade for that one. So maybe keep it out of the sun and make sure the flash is the only major light source.
Nice shot, Mat. Never would've guessed New Zealand ;) Love how they're nearly all looking at you.

I'm only getting up to 10 hours a week, which equals just under $100 after tax. Add that to the $85 dollars I'm left with per week after board from Centrelink... it's not much.
I'm getting nowhere with my lens addiction, let alone saving for a digital body. For future reference, you could give Notepad++ a try. Has support of HTML code indicators (tag checking) but is free, and pretty much like notepad on steroids. Thanks to David for this reference (he showed it to me). Another one is UltraEdit, but I think you have to "pay" for that one.

EDIT: OOPs...forgot to say what a great pic that is. I was warned to do Milford Sound in the early morning which means staying overnight or getting a chopper out there. Hmmm sounds expensive, but something I might do in 2008.

That photo is gorgeous Matt. Mum and her friends are going to NZ Jan next year and the Milford track is one of the many walks they are doing.
Those coloured objects in my photo are snakes :D

john, thankyou, i had it saved as a html, and managed to do my editing using word. Actually easier to do the editing there, than to tag it all in notepad! Now to host it!
Helen, that is amazing! well done, i would never have guessed. Hmm, hungry now. Off to the post office, so will stop by the lolly shop!

Rather off topic but I just got an email from Taste - large kitchenware shop in the valley that are having 20% off everything in the store this Thursday night (5-9pm). If anyone is in the market for a Kitchenaid or new pots this is the time to get them. They are located at 3 Montpelier Road.
Tina, I hear you on those html woes.

I can't seem to get the contrast of colours quite right...
Nice work there with great DOF although I find it a bit noisy or (a tad off ?) wonder why with such powerful camera of yours ? Or is it my eyes playing tricks on me again ??? Was it not enough light there or was it a big crop ??? Thanks for sharing.

Superb shot there. Thanks for sharing.
Spam took some gorgeous photos from the Sofitel. I love, love, love this one of the old Post Office (http://www.flickr.com/photos/-spam-/540412740/in/set-72157600337080365/) that spam took. My photos of the city from the Sofitel aren't the best I think because I was going cripes, cripes, cripes please don't kick us out.
What I would love to do is to spend a day jumping round the roofs (rooves sounds much nicer) of various buildings in the city taking photos. I saw some over on skyscraper city earlier and they were just so nice.
Kinnon, sounds like you had a great couple of days away.
I missed the Sofitel thingy. What is the deal up there ? I think I have to come up one day and have a look. Yesterday I was actually told off in a shopping centre for taking photos LOL. I did not realise cameras are not welcome in shopping centres. Well, for understanable reasonas I guess. Anyway, I got a few good snaps anyhow LOL before the guard told me to put the cam away.
Tina, hope you had your hard work of web page html back . I am sure you had fun with the designs etc etc.
Cheers
