Okay....you were right and I was wrong. :-(
The sunrise was crap, we froze our arses off and I didn't get any prizewinners. (Not sure about Andrew and Tina)
I did get this one....
I titled it: "I see dead people".

Nice work there with great DOF although I find it a bit noisy or (a tad off ?) wonder why with such powerful camera of yours ? Or is it my eyes playing tricks on me again ??? Was it not enough light there or was it a big crop ??? Thanks for sharing.
yeah it just doesn't look right to me either :(
it's not noisy I don't think... it's more I don't know how to process it for pop... DOF wasn't quite enough... it was a 100mm macro so it has VERY shallow DOF when you're that close to it.
No crop... that's how it was straight out of the cam... hence how close I was to the flower.
I need Greg's 180 Macro :(

Welcome Dan :)
Well, looking at some of Paul's and Shayb's photos from New Zealand (great shots, guys!) has inspired me to finally process the backlog of images I have from a trip over there in 2005 (was it that long ago?!? - gawd).
This is just a fun one :D

feng, your exif says you shot at iso1600, that would explain the noise. But why 1600?
next question... i have my monitor back, and connected it to my laptop. I am running a cordless mouse and keyboard. I want to turn the monitor of my laptop off. How do i do that? My local techo said to toggle f8, but nothing happens.

Mmm, the 180 is very nice, DoF is even less than the 100 and I'm slowly getting used to it. The quality of the out of focus blur is super smooth. The images I'm getting out of it look different to those from my 105 Macro - hard to explain really.

Tina, look for a function button to press at the same time. Might be in blue text like this Fn.
Edit ---- Tina, the Fn button will be on the laptop keyboard.

Thanks ....

ISO1600 should be ok on the 5D... I processed a little for noise though... hrmm... might have another play with it... just can't get the colour to pop :(
It'll be the Fn key like what Greg mentioned... what actual F key to press varies from laptop to laptop... but will usually have something like a pic of a monitor, or a CRT/LCD thing... You can usually press Fn-F8 (Whatever key it is) repeatedly...
alternatively, you can go into power settings and set it so when you close your laptop lid, it does nothing... and then just close it (start > settings > control panel > power settings >advanced)..... OR... run an extended desktop... which is a bit more difficult to explain without knowing what you're running.

I think 180 macro makes colours really pop!;):p
Sorry = couldn't resist. :p
Have a look at these actions here (http://www.logos-ingegneria.it/photo/download/actions.html). Velvia one can be a little much, Provia ones are better IMHO. Both are adjustment layers so you can tweak the opacity if needed.
I haven't shot much macro above ISO800 and even then I try not to get up that high. Only recently have I sarted to move from ISO100, mostly to get some colour in the background.

For just a little bit of "pop", Unsharp Mask using settings like 10/60/0 does wonders (as strange as it sounds). Doesn't really sharpen, just seems to help with contrast.

Not exactly, but I just checked the other photos I took on that date (May 27, 2005) and it looks like that was the one full day I had in Queenstown, when I drove out to Glenorchy and then up towards Paradise :D
That pic was taken early afternoon, so it would have been somewhere up there. Probably somewhere very close (relatively) to where you were!

Hi all, thought I would jump on and say a quick hi thanks to some prodding from GregC. I am slowly getting back into photography after a bit of a break planning a wedding. Now thats out of the road I will hopefully be able to go on a few outings with you all.
I currently have a 350D with assorted extras including the dirty old 18-55mm, 50mm f1.8, 70-200L f4 and the 530EX flash. I am really looking for a good all purpose to replace the 18-55mm in the near future. Not too near though, have to pay some credit cards off from the wedding. Probably looking at the 17-40mm or the 24-105mm.
Anyway, I enjoy photographing pretty much anything and took lots of photo's of Tasmania on my honeymoon. Here's one that we happened to see as we were leaving a place called "The Pub in the Paddock". It's the only place that I know of that you can feed 2 pigs beers. They can finish a full beer in under 4 seconds. Apparently they are world famous. That's about it from me I hope to see you all later.
PS. Yes, the grass really was this green. Unbelievable I know.

My mother and sisters decided to clean the keyboard one day while I was out. We're lucky that we have two computers otherwise they'd have been up the creek. :p They didn't do a perfect job though... I have to press Page Up now instead of End. That was a couple of months ago, so I'm used to it now and do it without thinking.
Feng - Haven't quite seen anyone hand over a hundred yet (and I hope I don't) but I see plenty of 20's being handed over, only to get a whole lot of shrapnel given back to them. Translink really need to give them more of the larger stuff in case they get people like that.
Helen - re: shrapnel - They should be thankful. When on express registers at Coles I soon learnt to take shrapnel as a blessing. Saves the embarrasing task of having to ask people if they have correct change if you run out of the small stuff later on.
Translink seriously needs a kick in the proverbial pants. Most of their drivers suck at cashflow management... HORRID customer service skills... not to mention that tonight was the second time in a month that I've had to give the bus driver directions on which way to go. And both times it was on the bus home from Chermside... I'd hate to hear how long it took them to get to the city.

Oooo Mat. Just thought of a question...(No...not where you hide your spare key).
Since you have both CS3 and LR and have presumably used both for a wee while now, do you find yourself using one much more than the other? (And of course..which one?) Well that's two questions, but there you go.
EDIT: Just thought of yet ANOTHER question. I see you have an Engin "Voice Box". I've been interested in the VoIP deal. Does this give you a reasonably fast broadband conection (being wireless, is it slower than "wired" modems)?

dan, i replied on your other thread. Stay tuned here, and give us some updates on when exactly you will be travelling etc, and then we can throw in our 2c worth. consider driving a car, far better than relying on tours, and cheaper in the long run i think. there is heaps to see just in our little corner of the world... apart from the gold coast and sunshine coast, there are the hinterlands, both north and south are beautiful. then head up to hervey bay, and do fraser island. fly up to cairns and spend a week up there, lots to do. fly to darwin, go to kakadu etc, so many options.

It's a little hard to explain (I'm not very good at explaining things), but they're really different applications, however they work together really well (I guess they've been designed to, so you'd hope so).
Essentially what I do is:*
1. I use Lightroom to organise my photos and sort them into collections, put keywords on them for searching/sorting, etc. Only the RAW files, as it displays RAW files nicely and fairly quickly.
2. When I want to process some files, I do the bulk "whole of photo" adjustments in Lightroom - cropping, WB adjustment, exposure (the normal camera RAW type adjustments). I typically do this to all the photos using Lightroom. Still only working with the RAW files - all the adjustments are stored in .XMP files the same as with Camera RAW.
3. If I want to give a particular photo a bit more attention - if it's something special, or I want to do something more than I can do in Lightroom, I right-click over the photo in Lightroom and there's an option called "Edit in Photoshop CS3". That then opens the file as a PSD in Photoshop where you can do whatever editing you like to it.
4. When I finish editing in Photoshop, I just hit "Save" and close that file. Then when I go back to Lightroom, there'll be a .PSD of that photo "stacked" on top of the original Lightroom-adjusted RAW file. You can unstack them if you want to - so you can see the Photoshop-edited version and the one without the Photoshop edits.
5. Then, when I finally want to make some JPGs of those photos, or TIFFs, or whatever (upload them to the web as a gallery, print them, all the other stuff you can do in Lightroom), I just export them from Lightroom. Lightroom exports the RAW files with the Lightroom adjustments, plus whatever photos are on top of stacks, so if I had the .PSD of the Photoshop-edited photo from step 4. "stacked" on top of the original RAW, I'd only get a JPG of the Photoshop-edited version. If they were "unstacked", I'd get JPGs of both.
So ... the upshot is that Lightroom is kind of like a front end for Photoshop. I've found that it's sped up my workflow a lot, and it's also allowed me to remove a lot of duplication, as I now only keep the RAW files (and any .PSD edits) in my library, and only dump out the final JPGs (or whatever) when I need them. I'm fairly impressed.
You could come around and have a look at it sometime if you like.
* no idea if this is anywhere near an "optimal" way of using them together - I probably haven't used them for long enough yet

EDIT: Just thought of yet ANOTHER question. I see you have an Engin "Voice Box". I've been interested in the VoIP deal. Does this give you a reasonably fast broadband conection (being wireless, is it slower than "wired" modems)?
Hehe, it's great :)
It's still a normal "wired" modem (an ADSL2+ modem), it's just a wireless access point as well. I'm not actually using the wireless part of it at the moment.
The VOIP quality is great - nobody I talk to can tell the difference between it and a normal phonecall. I was a bit worried that there might be some delay or lag, but there isn't.
My ADSL connection is around 6.5Mb (I'm on an 8Mb plan, but a long way from my exchange). I've also set it up for my mum on her 1.5Mb connection and it works fine there too.
I'm on a plan where I get all my local and STD calls included for $15/month. Considering how much my calls to Wagga would be costing me otherwise, it's a lifesaver :D

It looks OK to me, but it depends what sort of advice you're after?
Could have possibly done with a faster shutter speed, judging by the hands - ISO1600 and 1/1000 may have improved it.
Other than that, have you sharpened it in processing? Was it shot as a JPG or RAW?
Cheers,
Mat.

That's not too bad, Stuart. I think you mentioned the light was not too good and that certainly looks to be the case going by those settings.
I suppose you're only option really is what Mat suggested to get that shutter speed up. Or you could ask Connor to run a little slower next time ;)
Mat, I like the idea of that stacking feature in LR. However I'm not a fan of keeping PSD files of all photos (not enough space) so if you saved the Photoshopped pic as a JPEG instead of PSD, does it automatically stack that onto the RAW as well?
Oh, and regarding the raw adjustments in LR, is there anything beyond what the CS3 Camera RAW can do?

Thanks for that Mat
I think that's the best description of Lightroom I've seen. It's basically what I do now. I use Adobe Convertor to covert the CR2 RAW files to DNG RAW files (no messy .xmp sidecar files to worry about). Then I use adobe bridge to view and open files in Adobe Camera RAW to initially edit them. If they need further editing, I proceed to Photoshop and save them as TIFF files. I don't think I'll get Lightroom for now.
I then have the "original" DNG RAW file stored with the TIFF. I create JPEGs from that if I need it. I use iView MediaPro (now Microsoft Expression) to catalogue them.
I'm thinking of changing my workflow, by getting hold of Phase One's "Capture One" software to do the RAW processing instead of Camera RAW. It should reduce my usage of Photoshop altogether I hope.

Hi Stuart,
The picture is tonally flat due to the light it was shot in. It DESPERATELY needs a "Levels" adjustment to improve the tonal range.

Mat, I like the idea of that stacking feature in LR. However I'm not a fan of keeping PSD files of all photos (not enough space) so if you saved the Photoshopped pic as a JPEG instead of PSD, does it automatically stack that onto the RAW as well?As far as I can tell it wouldn't stack it automatically, as Lightroom first creates a PSD version of the RAW, stacks it with the original RAW, and then opens it in Photoshop. Then when you hit "save" in photoshop it just saves changes to that PSD file.
If you saved it as a JPG in Photoshop and wanted it to be stacked with the original RAW, I think you'd have to import it and stack it yourself (as far as I can tell).
The space issue hasn't really bothered me yet, as I tend to only edit maybe 1 in 20 photos in Photoshop, so I don't create a whole lot of PSD files. The rest I just carry as the original RAWs with the Lightroom adjustment XMP files (which are tiny).
That and because I have 5 x 300GB drives in RAID5 holding my data :D
Hard disk space is so cheap now ... a 750GB drive is getting down towards $300.
Oh, and regarding the raw adjustments in LR, is there anything beyond what the CS3 Camera RAW can do?
I'm not really sure, I haven't really compared the two. The only adjustments I tend to make in Lightroom are exposure, white balance, contrast/saturation and cropping.
Here are the Lightroom "develop" panels for more info (sorry for the huge post!).
These 4 sections are really one long vertically-laid-out panel.

The Levels adjustment is one of the basic adjustments of any version of Photoshop.
Vignetting is like conversion to black and white, in that there are many different ways of doing it. Can you tell us what kind of image adjustment software you have?
Really all you have to do is select an oval-shaped selection around the subject. Then you click "Select>Inverse" to invert the selection. Then you select "feather" and use a value of around 200 pixels. Then you use Brightness/Contrast or Levels or Curves to darken the selection. Viola!

Ahhh, that's just because I prefer to keep them as RAW + XMP files than have it convert them to DNG. Not convinced about DNG files yet.
I actually don't use Lightroom to download my card either, I still use Downloader Pro. I use it to download the card, rename the files and put them in the directories I want. I then just import them into Lightroom at their current location, which leaves the files where they are, but builds them into the Lightroom database.

Just used to Downloader Pro I guess. It does everything I want, plus I bought it (and that's all it does), so I feel some compulsion to use it :)
Yeah, I suspect I'll change over to DNG sometime (and get Lightroom to convert everything in my library ... that might take a while :D) ... but for some reason I prefer having completely read-only untouched RAW files at the moment. Not really sure why, probably some kind of OCD thing :-?

I use the camera raw database because I'm not too fond of those messy .xmp files either.

For the newer Camera's it's in the EOD Utility. They changed this about the time they released the 5D or 30D. This only puts it into the Canon Maker notes fields. I actually use DownloaderPro to add similar data to the IPTC fields also as it downloads the files from the card reader to the PC.

I'm similar to Helen on this line of thought... I've just needed the extra stop a couple of times in door wanting to do some wide work where f/4 just wasn't fast enough... and I didn't want to use a flash (taking piccies of baby etc)... I'm not phased... dont' get me wrong... love the 17-40 and already have that... (was cheap yes)... but just found it restrictive in a case where the stop would've been nice.
I went for the 24-105 f4, though the extra stop would be nice I usually just chuck on a prime (30, 50, 85) at that gives me almost 2 stops, mind you, without the convenience of the zoom.
how much does your bag weigh again?:lol::lol:

about 10kg:o, although as soon as you take the body and one lens out this reduces quickly.

Yah I live primes too. I'd love a 35 f/1.4L but 70-200 is a greater priority as is the 180 macro.
I have a 50 f/1.4 and an 85 f/1.2L already. Will probably sell my 50 f/1.4 when my contax adapter and split prism turn up :D (if the lens is any good :) which I have no doubt it will be :))

Good lord that boy gets around. I suppose this will be another place that I can't hide from him - sigh.
Does he ever actually work is what i wonder........
Thanks for welcome!

I'm considering changing my 17-40 for a 16-35 f2.8L II, but not for the extra stop or the extra mm. I pretty much always use it at f8 and ISO100 (99% of the time I use it for landscapes), so I've got lots of aperture and ISO stops I could use before it'd run out of puff :)
I've just found that although my 17-40 is an amazing lens on a crop body, it's a little soft in the corners on a FF body, and it seems that the new 16-35 is improved in that regard.
One day, maybe ... one day ... :)

yeah... it's more for those odd occasions where I just would love the extra stop. I'd probably settle for the MkI though cos I'd like to keep my filter ring size the same :) hahahah silly reason but *shrug*... after all it's only for the stop :)

Ello all, it's freezing here too. I was just at work at the jewellers at the shopping centre - nice and air con but I'm just about to go to coles to work and even though they have air con I'm right near the door so I get blasted with the cold every time it opens :( And at home my heater is broken, double :( :( I'm wrapped up in the doona at the moment.
My next lens is going to be a wide angle. I miss my 10-22 since selling it, shame it's an ef-s. All this talk of people selling their 17-40's could be dangerous for me :S

Spent a bit of time customising the EXIF panel in IMatch today. There is a viewer built in that shows all of the EXIF but the tabs you can see below are easily customised to give quick access to this info without having to use the viewer. This is very cool as a lot of the info I've shown is Canon maker note specific. Some of the fields like the Shooting Data as really 5 different EXIF fields strung together.
Tina, let me know if you want to do this to your copy of IMatch and I'll tell you how to load the file

I am so cold and i cannot take photos properly today, nearly all shots this arvo are off. Maybe time to head the bed early for that nice and warm quilt.
Now, Feng nobody could force you to not going around naked if you want to in this weather. Just get a proper group of nudists with you for protection from staring eyes LOL and for warmth.
