The newer P3000 and P5000 units are a lot faster than the P2000. The P5000 is about the same price as the 2000 was when I bought it.

do you know if you can swap HDDs into these things?

and is only the HDD size the difference between the P3000 and the P5000?

If I am at an airshow, I find it to be really handy - I keep shooting with my other cards while the 4Gb is downloading then I just spend the rest of the day swapping and downloading.

You can download other peoples cards, too, as each download is treated separately and has its own folder so you can split them out at the end of the day.

I like that it will display JPG and RAW pictures, too.
Yeh, Paul (meaty0) has a p3000 (I think) and I've eyed it off a couple of times we done some shoots together. I've got a IRiver 40G mp3 palyer that can upload at USB1.1 but it needs a card reader and doesn't support RAW. It's an awesome MP3 player though.:D I've replaced the OS with the Rockbox OS and got a heap more features.

Processor and bus speeds differ. You probably can swap in another disk but they run a proprietry OS so that would kinda screw the deal.

I was also keenly waiting for the Canon M30 and M80 units - that were announced nearly a year ago and no-one has seen. Their benefit was the ability to use the same batteries as the 20D, 30D, 5D series cameras.

Still waiting...

I heard that the UK was going to get them but the US wasn't - there were a few disgruntled American POTN members muttering about it.

Well at least it looks like we are getting them here (or one of them anyway).

The Canon Aus site has the M80 up: see here (http://www.canon.com.au/products/cameras/digital_slr/M80.aspx) RRP of $1099 - that's competitive with the Epson isn't it?

That's pretty comparable then. Depending on the features of each of course, which I haven't really gone into yet.

I did 2 weeks in NZ and a week north of Sydney back in March - shot two weddings as well as all the scenery shots and it all travelled just fine on the 40G in the P-2000.

True, although today was no where near as bad as the other day.

I just realised something, if i buy a battery grip for the 20d, im going to need a larger bag. The 6 million dollar home wont fit that, the 28-135, tubes, 50mm, lensbaby and 12-24 (let alone the flash) at once. Maybe i will have to get the 7 million dollar home aswell

Ive already got my sights on a computrekker aw for my trip down to melbourne at the end of the year.

In my 7mh I fit
70-200mm f/4
12-24mm
30mm
50mm
18-55mm
24-85mm
580ex flash
kenko tubes
camera body attached to any of those lenses
plus all the other bods and sods eg filters, cables, lunch, water etc etc

Can you guess what ISO level this was taken at? (Shot at f/2.8, 1/100s, no PP)

Get an old PC with a couple of large drives, install Linux and Samba and there's your NAS. Now you only have to decide between the 50 f/1.4 and the P3000 :)

TARDIS = Time And Relative Dimension(s) In Space
RAID = Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks
JBOD is really Just a Bunch Of Disks

FreeNAS is pretty good I hear... still need to buy disks either way, but yeah... :) I got a Thecus NAS, and am goingt o update it's 2x300 mirrored disk to a 4x250G RAID5 array.

Greg. If you want a box for your NAS, i got some old Dell gear which you may like. Dual PIII 450... with spare mobos CPUs etc...

Let me know if you're interested.

Allow 10% of the total order value in AUD (shipping included) plus about $50 I believe. I think that's it. I'm sure others can verify or amend those figures.

So if I get some stuff from B&H how much do I have to pay for duty or what ever? How many people have used B&H before? I've used B&H a lot. Basically, if the value of your order (including shipping costs )IN AUSTRALIAN DOLLARS is over $1,000, you have to pay GST on the total order, so watch that order amount carefully and allow for currency variations. If you split the order, Aus. Customs are awake up to that and they'll still hit you for GST. You can split the order and wait a few weeks between orders without problems. There is no import duty on camera stuff.

Now....with B&H, if your order is over 1,500 USD, then they won't accept Australian credit card payments because Australian banks won't authenticate the cards for O/S company enquiries (privacy laws...stupidest laws ever legislated). So you have to wire the money directly to their account using a TT through your bank. I've done it a couple of times now and it's no big deal at all. I believe that B&H now accept PayPal for any amount.

On the other hand, Adorama don't bother with all that authentication crap and will just accept your CC payment.

If you need to find out more, just PM me....I'm putting my order in with B&H tomorrow for some nice juicy lenses:D

I managed to get Thecus to take it back, put together a box with an LSI raid controller and voila, 1.5 terabytes of storage. But I digress.
Those little Epson P thingies look quite impressive, there are a lot of other brand ones out there just for storage, they don't have the LCD screen on them but they are about half the price.

Thanks, I've been out to the back yard, but there's not a lot about this time of year. Found a few small spiders but they were far too small for great resolution. Then I had a peewee come and check me out as I was laying on the ground. Trouble was I had a heap of tubes on the macro lens and couldn't get close enough to focus.

We also came across a heap of wrens - welcome ones plus fantails... those little buggers move so fast - I reckon any of my motion blur ones will fit the bill for this weekend :)

We still have ice on the grass at our back door from last nights frost so there is no way I am heading out to lie on the ground for the birds. um - there is still ice in the bird bath...

Sounds much better than my day. Today was nice outside but only about 20C. Yesterday it only got to 15C with a wind that took it down to about 11C. No ice though, up here that would be really something to see.

Birds ice skating in your bird bath.:D A pair of Barbie Ice skates next to the frozen bird bath - that would be a cool and funny shot.

Here she is. This magnificent instrument is now over 100 years old and still the finest of its type. It has more than 4,000 pipes! If you look hard enough, you can almost hear the music. Sadly our glorious Lord Mayor is letting it fall into disrepair.

So you are saying that you dont take your camera to work with you? Geeze, you really need like a 6MDH or something just so you can take the camera and a lens or 2 with you everywhere.

Sorry Nick. I had a senior moment and forgot what it was called. It's the WFT-E2A wireless transmitter. It allows you to transmit pictures directly to your computer as you take them. It also allows you to remotely control your camera from your computer. Pretty neat hey?

I really like the "live view" function too...you lucky dog.

Ah, ok. No I don't have the transmitter. While it certainly looks nifty (you can also hook up a USB GPS to it to automatically tag your images with location data as well), I believe it retails for around AU$2000. I can't really justify spending that sort of money on something I don't really have a need for at the moment.

Live view function IS cool. I can see it being of great use for setup macro shots - using the 10x zoom on the LCD makes pin-pointing focus very easy.

Well I did my PC trip this arvo and bought a Manfrotto 482 micro ball head to replace the Hama one on my flash bracket that kept slipping. Hopefully this one is better built and holds the flash head up. With the 180 Macro I use the flash bracket more and there is more stress on things as I have to bend the bracket out and down more to point it at the subject.

Focus was on the mm part of the 24-70mm writing. Haven't had a chance to test infinity focus, but if feels as if it can go that far. :)

Would love to take some shots in daylight at low ISO so I can rule out noise. :)

Have some fun indeed!

I actually have a Zeiss Jena MC Flektogon 20mm f2.8 here (M42 mount) with an EOS converter of unknown origin .... I haven't actually worked up the courage to try it with my 5D yet. I'm too worried about the mirror hitting it ....

Can't find too much concrete evidence of whether it could be an issue or not with this particular lens.

Heya Mat.

Check out http://www.16-9.net/lens_tests/compatible.html

M42 lenses are 'supposedly' ok with EF mounts. I know K-mount lenses need quite a bit of 'hacking' to work on full frame bodies... but are ok with crop cams with minor 'hacking' :)

Woohoo. Just ordered one of THESE (http://www.velbon-tripod.com/ultra_maxi.htm) After Photocontinental sold me one with a part missing and then couldn't get a replacement, (Maxwells mucked them around I suspect....grrrrrr Maxwells!) I ordered it from OS. I got the Ultra MAXi SF.

Despite having a name like a panty liner, it's a great little tripod for mounting your flash on or for macro shots or tabletop shots at close range. And fits in your bags easily...good for travel. (No subliminal messages...an outright sales pitch here folks.) :-D

Ok people, I'm looking to put my B&H order in tomorrow. If anyone wants anythin' let me know and I'll add it.

Just keep in mind that GST will be payable so you might have to work out whether it's worth it or not. If it's only small and doesn't cause the shipping cost to go up by much you won't have to put any money toward freight.

The M42 lens is a standard mount as far as I'm aware. Everything I've read about them it is... it's a bit like say... the EOS mount... the EOS mount has standard fittings, distances, protrusions etc...

The K mount technology is standard too with this huge protrusion jutting out the back of it.

You should be able to get a good idea by looking at it.

Keep me in mind when you decide to part with the lens :) I wouldn't mind having a play :D love old manual lenses :)

It came with my EOS IX that I bought 2nd hand. Thing about the IX was that it was a 1.6 crop also - way before digital days. I used it on the 300D all the time. I wanted a longer reach so I bought the 18-125 but was never all that happy with it. Focus on the 18-125 was very hit and miss. I once compared the these two with the 24-105 shooting a target from a tripod. The results for the 18-125 were very yucky. I remember reading a few threads around the place the the champagne coloured copies of the 24-85 seem to be much better than the black copies. Myth, who knows but I'm happy with mine.

Hey John,

Was your Peanut an A-30 or an Austin Atlantic?

::John::
27th of June 2007 (Wed), 23:17
um - Mine was actually the A35 - a bit newer, slightly different body shape but still an interesting car from a long past era.

From an even earlier time was the Austin 7 of which we had quite a few (Dad used to drive a 1928 model to work every day and my brothers first car was a 1936 Austin 7)

I didn't get mine until I had left home and moved to another city - my first car was from a different marque - a 1939 "Standard Flying 12"

um - Mine was actually the A35 - a bit newer, slightly different body shape but still an interesting car from a long past era.

From an even earlier time was the Austin 7 of which we had quite a few (Dad used to drive a 1928 model to work every day and my brothers first car was a 1936 Austin 7)

I didn't get mine until I had left home and moved to another city - my first car was from a different marque - a 1939 "Standard Flying 12"

oooo an Austin 7. We had a very elderly customer here some time ago who'd owned one since new! I wondered why they called it a "Chummy" until I saw him and his wife in it. They were shoulder to shoulder and it was so crowded, he had trouble moving his arm to change the gears. :-D

yup - not a huge amount of room - and the engine was small enough that my father would lift it out and put it on the workbench to work on it - without lifting equipment!

The 1937 model had the ultimate luxury - pneumatic seats - I kid you not - the seats had rubber bladders under the leather that you could inflate/deflate to your own comfort level :)

Very interesting great pictures. The black and white seem to convey that slightly darker side of life. The messages are especially "intriguing" ???

Thanks for sharing ...

cool shay, nice to add to one's kit!

i'm back! god it was cold in H.B. (yes i know here too, but it is really supposed to be warm there!) did a bit of shooting, no time yet to check them out, and i did my card in, it just wont format, so off to where i got it from on monday. what a pain! I will try to read 4 days worth of posts! not being ignorant if i don't get to post a reply on something.

Is a "second" higher than a "merit"?
they give a score out of fifteen, (3 judges score each out of five, and they add them up) and then about 30% of those get the acceptance level (usually about a 12), then they weed out the first, second, and merits, and the number of merits depend on how many acceptance shots there are.

Do they give certificate-type things for merits and such? Tina must have enough to fully wallpaper her house by now.
haha, thanks nick. they do, but i can only do one wall at the moment!

Thanks.

The scanner i have been using is a loaner from my dads work because they got one of those massive epson things. Although the one we are using is pretty old and i want a new one.

Yeah, thanks for the heads up though. I was about to order it from photobuff, but i checked the DD site and they had it for $20 less which went towards the stofen.

Is that AUD or USD? Either way that seems pricey. Although if they're one of these companies that just add the individual freight costs to get the total ...
The BH order I just put in came to about US$180 and I'd guess you're talking at least 5-6kg for that.

Sam, that third pic looks oddly familar (and no, I don't mean from the stint I spent at Boggo Rd ;)). I think I've seen someone else's shot somewhere from almost exactly the same position.

Come to think of it, i may have posted that one in here before. I couldnt remember if i had when i was posting the most recent ones, so i threw it in there anyway.

It'd be USD, but I'm going to email them to ask them for a slightly better freight price... if not, I'll order anyway. Still much cheaper espsh for the CPL. I'm happy to bear the weight of most of the freight seeing how much I'm saving on the CPL.
