I've been looking to get a 430EX to use as slave.

kinda like me, I'm actually suffering from deja vu and amnesia at the same time - I think I've forgotten this once before:D :D ;)

Joke time.

Alzheimer's Or Parkinson's

Which one would you rather have?

Parkinson's of course!

Better to spill half your drink than forget where you put it!;)

LOL ... I need to squeeze my brain a bit on this one. I finally got it !!! Smart choice indeed ?

Got back from late nite shopping for bargains. Been a while I shop for clothes. Did some night photo.

Nope! Why would I ever get my but in gear and do that! Over the years the colour has grown on me.

Oh roll around spring! I need some macro subjects to shoot. I found a few jumpers this morning but they are still tiny. A couple of bees and heaps of flies. I don't really like shooting flies.

That's OK, I ended up taking shots of the flies anyway, See here (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=341933).

The DoF (or lack thereof) on the 180 is something that is taking a lot of getting used too. The backgrounds blur very nicely but it just happens sooo quickly. I ran some numbers through a DoF calculator and was getting something like greater than 3x less DoF than with the Siggy 105 macro. And the DoF is paper thin to start with.

Bit of a OH DOH moment but I'm coming to the conclusion that it's best for bigger macro subjects that are further away. When you try to use it up very close, either by itself or with tubes, the narrow DoF is harder to cope with.
A monopod has also helped a great deal stability wise.

A lot depends on how you want to organise things. Ther are two types of DAM (Digital Assett Management) software, Browsers, that just read the info already in the file, and Cataloging software, these read the info in the images and generally build their own independent DB containing this info and links to the original images.

Here's a list I found with a quick Google search. Here. (http://www.steves-digicams.com/digsoftware_databases.html)

But:D, you already know my preference.... the not for free IMatch (http://www.photools.com/). Works out at $70AU with the current exchange rate. Does have a free 30day trial and I really recommend you give it a go. If anything it will give you something to compare against. PM me if you try this and want any help. Same goes for anyone else out there!!

I've just spent 30min this morning doing a bit of DB maintenance myself. The first 5000 odd images I took were before I started to use DownloaderPro. I've set an option in DownloaderPro to prefix all of the images as they are downloaded with the camera model ie 30D. These first 5000 images were just called IMG_xxxx.*, but I've now renamed them to be 300D_IMG_xxxx.* as back then I had a 300D.

I did this by searching in IMatch for all images created between June 2004 (when I got the 300D) and Aug 2005 (when I started using DLpro). Then I simply used the in built rename in IMatch to prefix these with 300D_ Done!

I've gotta bolt now to go and pick up my kids. I'll add a list of features a good Cataloging Progie should have later today.

I've done nearly 4hrs driving today. My kids were with my sister who is now living at Marcoola on the Sunshine Coast. We had to drive up and get them, have a bit of morning tea then turn around and come home.

As we placed the kids bags into the boot of the car we all looked up to see two Brahminy kites cruising about. I couldn't get the camera out quick enough though.:(

Ahaaaaaa! It WAS you. We went for a drive to Mapleton, Flaxton, Kenelworth Gympie and back home on the Bruce Hwy. I thought I saw you drive past.:D

There were plenty of Kites/Hawks around weren't there? And did you notice how they hovered so still in that westerly?

Have a nice drive? Cruise control all the way for me (where possible that is) so I wouldn't have been speeding.:D

Thinking about a revisit to Nudgee area etc to get some shots of the kites. These open swampy plains seem to be a good place to see them. I hate seeing them when I'm driving cause I can get more than a glimpse. They just seem to be nailed to the one spot in the air don't they!

I've got the week off:p:p. Spending a bit of time with the kids so they don't have to spend the whole hols in vacation care. Trac will take a day off later in the week and we'll do something as a family - thinking theme park maybe. Shhhh don't tell the kids yet!;)

still yet to contact hkstar with regard to freight, but after a convo with Nick, i think it may be just a given. Good afternoon, all!

Spent a bit of the weekend down the coast for the Gold Coast Marathon. No, don't be silly, I don't run it. My dad always does either the marathon or the half and the family usually tags along for a bit of support. I haven't been in a while but thought I'd head down and grab a few pics while I was there.

I popped a couple over in the sport forum: FOLLOW ME (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=342813)

I was hoping to get a shot of dad somewhere along the course but I missed him heading out from the start as well as on the way back after the turn :(.
In fact, after spending at least an hour looking for him at the finish after the race, we gave up and headed back to the unit. Not 400m from the door we spotted him in front of us so I had to get my shot ;):

Another quick one from the same trip to Canberra (in January last year) as the previous pic I posted (which was part of one of the dioramas at the war memorial).

This guy was one of a group of protesters at Parliament House, protesting the abortion drug RU486. I thought it was fairly powerful.

Also got to love that smooth 85mm f1.8 bokeh ... that's old parliament house in the background :)
Probably should clone out that insignia on his shirt pocket.

Sorry to interrupt on this Brisbane thread. Forgive me if I have sinned!

Just thought you might like to know there is a possibility of you getting some photos of the Pasha Bulker soon.

She was pulled off Nobby's Beach about 9:30pm tonight, and following assessment from divers, she may be towed up to Brisbane to use the larger floating dock you have there for repairs.

Anyway, I'll go back to my Newcastle cave!

I've been a bad boy this arvo, I've been playing with fire (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?p=3477768#post3477768). I also took a shot of a Zygo cactus (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=343223)in my garden.

Sam, there was some probs with the very early Canon grips for the 20D but they modified the design. Can't remember hearing anything about these ones though. My grip on the 30D is a little loose, not much, and you only notice it with larger lens on. And no the answer is not to give you the big lenses.:p

Who's going to BCG tonight? I'm 50/50 on this at the moment as I'm feeling horrible with the flu. My luck to get it when I'm on hols hey!

Most definitely :D

Now i want a battery grip

I was looking at one of these (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Battery-Grip-for-Canon-20D-30D-2x-BP-511A-Remote-B6D_W0QQitemZ130128760853QQihZ003QQcategoryZ48516Q QrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) off ebay the other night, but it looks like its made differently to the canon one. The battery compartment opens like the one on the grip for the 400d

I hate non genuine power related things now a days... I'd just shell out the 200 bucks for a genuine one, or wait for someone on OCAU to sell one (or WTB it).

Yeh, I saw this on OCAU. The 50 macro and converter might have been nice to play with but I had no pressing need. If i was to get a macro downt his short end it'd be the EF-S 60mm if anything but I don't have any plans.

you could get a sigma 10-20 and just crop the cut off parts of the image back to an 8mp image. That would be pretty wide and thanks to sigmas DC lenses being different to the EF-S ones, it would still mount on the 5d

Ooh and i found some of the dividers i had lost from my 6mdh so i took a photo of it. Its now pretty FULL (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showpost.php?p=3478220&postcount=777) and rather heavy :)

I've also thought about the Siggy 8mm, but like you the Peleng 8mm would be better value for the use I'd give it.

photos are coming and boy am I not looking forward to sorting through them all. I have had a bit of a flick through them and there are some beauties to come.

All up we did 2813km and I reckon I probably did about 2/3 of that driving. The walk didn't go as planned due to all the rain that the Mackay region had - we ended up doing 2 of the 4 sections before we moved south to a spectacular gorge WSW of Mackay called Hazelwood Gorge and then onto Blackdown Tableland which was utterly breath taking.

I think my camera needs the 250,000km service, it is starting to take a lot longer than it used to to write to my CF cards. mmm and I think the focus is starting to go. mmm I don't know.???

I just watched that youtube video that someone posted earlier of the mk3 and dammm Nick, what is your addy and when will no one be home and where is the spare key so I can knick said camera. damm that looks like one fine piece of camera.

Ha, just sounds like you are trying to justify a new one!! Could it be a old and crappy CF card? Do you always format the card rather than delete the files, sometimes if the files have just been deleted from the card this can cause all sorts of weird problems. Apparently CF card do end up dieing at some stage. Hasn't happened here yet (touch wood:p).

Nice shot Sam, BIF are hard to get - well done, I've held off an the ring light, the twin light is mighty tempting though but I plan to get a second flash (probably a 430EX) for portrait work and I want to see how well it works with the 580EX for macro stuff.

Love those bee shots, Greg!

Hrmmm, I know some of you guys read OCAU .... this dude (http://forums.overclockers.com.au/showthread.php?t=589064) never ceases to amaze me. I feel like reaching into my monitor and slapping some sense into him :)

For some reason it really annoys me when people who aren't really interested in photography buy up all the expensive gear for the "new toy" value. Especially when I think of all the really keen photographers I know who'd love to have that level of equipment! ... and how long it took before I could afford the gear I've got now.

Rant over :)

I hear you.

He says he is a stay at home dad as well, so I would imagine that his wife is going out there every day earning money just so he can blow it on stuff that he really has no interest in.

He also gives me the impression that he is one of those people who reckon that better gear will make them a better photographer. Definitely not the case.

Greg, I really like them all. At least you had some flowers that kept the bees interested for long enough so you could get the shot composed. :)
Thanks.
Huh!, you should try balancing that monstrosity and manually focusing just as the bee lands. ;) Actually they stay on each flower for a few seconds so you just have to wait until the bee goes to the flower you have scoped out. I was following one bee and was going around in circles. It would come back to a flower it had just been on and sniff it or something and quickly leave. As it did this I'm thinking don't stop there you idiot of a bee you were just there. They have all the mental capacity of a goldfish!!

And there i was about 5cm away from said bee. Good thing i had IS ;)
I was further away than I thought I'd be. I guess the 1.4 would increase your closest focus distance and then the tubes reduce it. So things were about even. I was probably 20cm away I guess.

Love those bee shots, Greg!
Thanks Mat.

Mmmmmm indeed!
Hrrmm, now I'm really hungry. Thanks Paul! :)
I feel the same way. Best way to improve is to get out and shoot more, not change you gear like you do underwear.

Looks like a very nice cake, and Paul, when you going to make it for all of us? Also how much for membership to Diabetes Aust.? Did you see the amount of sugar in that?! Not that that's a bad thing but boy.

Heh, yeah ... I thought the same thing initially, but then it all became a bit confusing (http://forums.overclockers.com.au/showthread.php?t=547252).

It's almost like he needs expensive toys (http://forums.overclockers.com.au/showthread.php?t=563101) to keep himself amused (http://forums.overclockers.com.au/showthread.php?t=551619) .... I'd have thought his 6 (!) kids would have that under control! :)

... anyway, each to his own! :D enough of my busy bodying (is that a word?)
