You'd need it to tame that sour cream! Ewww, not sure that cake's getting my vote.
It's almost like he needs expensive toys (http://forums.overclockers.com.au/showthread.php?t=563101) to keep himself amused (http://forums.overclockers.com.au/showthread.php?t=551619) .... I'd have thought his 6 (!) kids would have that under control! :)
Mid-life crisis comes to mind ;)

Ok folks I've just finished my bees. For the first time I used a heap of stuff chucked together. ie Canon 180+1.4 Tele+68mm tubes. They are over here (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?p=3483824#post3483824).

Half a bee, philosophically,

But half the bee has got to be
Vis a vis, its entity. D'you see?
But can a bee be said to be
Or not to be an entire bee
When half the bee is not a bee
Due to some ancient injury?
La dee dee, one two three,
Eric the half a bee.
A B C D E F G,

Is this wretched demi-bee,
Half-asleep upon my knee,
Some freak from a menagerie?
No! It's Eric the half a bee!
Fiddle de dum, Fiddle de dee,
Eric the half a bee.
Ho ho ho, tee hee hee,

We do this occasionally also. Usually happens when we are checking other peoples work and you need to concentrate for a long period uninterrupted. Even in the office if I was to lock myself away into a conference room I'd get people coming in to ask questions. I'm usually very happy to help others (ask NerdyNigel - we used to work together) but sometimes you've just got to shut out all those distractions to get the job done. Some days I wish I had a Sex & Travel sign to hang up near my desk.;)

Thanks Tina, have a nice trip away?
yes thanks greg, even though it rained for a day! how rude. Don't think i came home with much, but i did amuse a few people, when i lay on the footpath at the esplanade to shoot the galahs feeding on the ground. I got a few cute dog shots, must go back and do the off leash area again, when the light is better. I got a great shot of my friends dog leaping off the ground, but it is just a smidgen blurry. I really spent most of my time with family and friends.

Thanks.
Huh!, you should try balancing that monstrosity and manually focusing just as the bee lands. ;) Actually they stay on each flower for a few seconds so you just have to wait until the bee goes to the flower you have scoped out. I was following one bee and was going around in circles. It would come back to a flower it had just been on and sniff it or something and quickly leave. As it did this I'm thinking don't stop there you idiot of a bee you were just there. They have all the mental capacity of a goldfish!!
I was further away than I thought I'd be. I guess the 1.4 would increase your closest focus distance and then the tubes reduce it. So things were about even. I was probably 20cm away I guess.
Thanks Mat.
I feel the same way. Best way to improve is to get out and shoot more, not change you gear like you do underwear.
Looks like a very nice cake, and Paul, when you going to make it for all of us? Also how much for membership to Diabetes Aust.? Did you see the amount of sugar in that?! Not that that's a bad thing but boy.
It'll be ready in about twenty minutes. I still have to make the orange glaze. I also cut the amount of sugar in half. (This is an American recipe...they're obsessed with sugar and butter.):p

mmmm printer goodness.
I was just loooking at the specs of the mkIII as that youtube video got me *thinking* and man it is not that much more compared to the price of the 5D.
12mm is 15.6mm on that which is reasonably wide.
Though I don't think it will fit in my handbag quite as well as the 5D. mmmm only about 7wks till I expect a new release.
Need to get a full time job yet though.

yeah I pondered the 1.3x too... but then i had the issue that my main lens is a 24-70... and 24 on 1.3x is 31 which isn't really that wide on my main walky lens... so hence FF... 5D << 1Ds series :D heheh

Shouldn't you be processing photos? :)
The fairly comparable price is what made me choose the 2N over the 5D, especially when you add the cost of the battery grip and extra battery (if so inclined). However, I don't think I'm nearly as much of a wide nut as you people :D
It will be interesting to see the specs of the 5D replacement.
Need to get a full time job yet though.

Woohoo, my CS3 and LR parcel has arrived. Installing CS now and it's taking forever.
Couple of questions: You had to choose english or international english when installing. I wasn't sure which one but I picked international - was that right (in the case that it actually matters)?
And to those with Lightroom: Do I need to bother installing from the disc or can I just download the 1.1 version from the web and activate that?

CS3 is great, but I'll be interested to see if you have the same bug as I have in the new Bridge. When you delete files from Bridge, there "sometimes" is a "Sorry for the inconvenience but Bridge has to close" message. Some Windows compatability issue.
Also, CS3 installs as a separate program and doesn't write over the CS2. Don't delete your old CS2 straight away. You may need to put all your Plug-Ins in a separate folder and point both programs at that so they share them.
Have fun:D

Thanks for the tip, Paul. I haven't removed CS2 yet. When I got the laptop I gave my desktop that had Photoshop on to my sister. After installing PS on the lappy I realised I'd forgotten about the plug-ins, actions, settings, etc. I managed to think of that this time around, though. :)

Once you've converted your total order value to AUD (including postage costs) allow 10% of that plus about $50 and that should cover the import charges. UPS (assuming they're shipping it) will deal with Customs themselves and then UPS just request the additional charges from you before releasing the package.
I understand that you can pay by CC up to $1500 but they will require you to send a copy of your CC, front and back. I paid for our current order via wire transfer (as I have done in the past). Adorama should accept CC without any hassle - same prices usually and reliability. I use them for smaller purchases.

Yep, we're going to go and see it again. Trac wants to see it also after Aaron and I raved about it so much.
I was on the upper edge of the demographic when Transformers came out originally. I used to watch the cartoons a bit, but not religiously and I didn't have any of the toys. This probably makes me a prime pick for the movie - I remember it from my childhood.:o
The effects are awesome, but after a while you tend not to notice them. The story isn't super strong but works well enough to lead you from one action scene to the next. Good mindless entertainment for men and boys.

Mind you she is only a small Foxie/Jack Russell. One year we lost two labradors and a budgie! Blew clear over the neighbour's roof. Never saw them again. The dogs did always enjoy the breeze in their face when hanging it out the car window. :D

Ok guys, here's another call for interested parties for a visit to the Abbey Medieval Festival on this Sunday 8th July. Paul (Meaty0) and I are going and the more the merrier! This type of event is great for People Candids, the participants usually expect to be photographed and are quite good about it. I expect it will be quite busy as they have quoted numbers of 18,000 for last year across two days.
Hi Greg and group. Thought I'd give the Brisbane POTN thread a post for the first time!
I was just about to post something about the medieval festival and thought I'd check this thread first. My girlfriend and I were thinking about going to take some photos for the first time (beginner photographers) and wondered if anyone had any tips on getting some great shots.
I'll keep an eye out for some other 30D users :-)

Hi All, back from a family trip to Seaworld today. Had a great day, weather was kind to us, we all had fun and I've managed to get a few photos. I walked around with a 70-200 on the camera most of the day and boy did I get some stares, and a few nice camera or big lens comments. Trac did also when she was minding the gear when Aaron and I went on a few rides. Now to work on some photos....

Yeah. They moved into the shop next door, which is longer and they've made it into what seems like a smaller version of Photo Continental. It's funny seeing the difference between the two signs outside above the entrance - Ted's now trying to cover up some of those grey hairs he has :p

ello all. What's the best way to clean my laptop screen? There's little bits of dust stuck to it by static I think. I tried a microfibre cloth but that just seemed to push the dust around the screen instead of actually removing it. Is there anything I can use to remove the dust?
::John::
6th of July 2007 (Fri), 23:51
We have one of those 'charged' dust wipe things from the supermarket. Green handled thing with a white, slip-on mop-type arrangement. It lifts the dust and lint off real fast.

lol, nice one. Isn't his name Killer?
It seems Aaron and I are about to acquire a golden retriever in a pretty bad state, he's malnourished, hasn't been groomed in his whole life (matted and covered in knots) covered in sores and who knows what else.
We don't have the room for him and our landlord said we can't have pets but for this dog it's either we take him or his future looks pretty bleak. He's old so we just want to make his final days the best for him.
It's going to be interesting trying to hide him from the neighbours (landlord's parents). At least it wont be for too long tho, when we move to melb he'll have a huge yard to play in.

They sell them at bunnings so I can get a discount on them. Although, bunnings is a 15 min drive down the road for me and coles is just 300m away from my house, it'll probably cost me more in petrol than it will in savings
::John::
7th of July 2007 (Sat), 00:08
Yeah - Killer and his brother :)
Regarding the golden retriever - they are a beautiful natured dog - it's a pity it hasn't been looked after - I would talk to the landlord and try to appeal to their human nature - tell them about the condition - tell them you are looking at moving - tell them that you are wanting to give a badly treated animal some love and attention for its remaining days and hope like hell that your landlord has a caring disposition. It's always better to be honest up front - but that also make things harder.
When we moved to Canberra, we had 2 cockateils (one has since died). It was very hard to find a place to rent where we could have the bird. We finally did find a place and the landlord has no issues with the bird or the dog. We are about to go through it all again though because we could only get a 12 month lease (the place is going to be demolished).

We tried being honest before John. When I had the business there was a Samoyed who needed a new home, same reasons just not as bad. We talked and talked to the landlord, told them what state the dog was in but she didn't care. Fortunatley for the Samoyed one of the other dog wash owners in town took him. But for his golden retriever it's just up to us.
Our landlord and her parents (we live in a duplex and her parents live next to us) are strange strange people. They have done so many dodgy things I could write a book about it. Last year we went on holidays and we came home to find a tree had been pulled out of our yard because it was blocking the neighbours view of the road but it was giving us privacy. We have since put a lock on the gate. They fill our bins up with their rubbish. We used to park the truck beside the house, but we got a letter from the real estate saying that we can't park on common ground. Fine. But we share a driveway and the always have visitors who park in the driveway, then I can park my car in the garage, or like at the moment, the daughter goes away during the school holidays and leaves her car in the driveway for weeks on end so I can park my car in the garage.....I've already had one car stolen from this place. We had an attempted break in in broad daylight when aaro was home, we asked for more security, they said no - it would ruin the look of the place.
We're good tenants, we treat this as if it was our own home, we not loud, we don't have parties we mind out own business, we've been here for over 3 years and I've just had enough!
They're just dodgy as, the rules apply to us but not them. Stuff them I reckon. If we get kicked out we get kicked out, I dont really care anymore. Once they start following the rules so will we.

Ah, OK
We had a contractor turn up here unannounced and I told him to bugger off and go through the proper channels - I then contacted the real estate agent and told her I had the tenants right to 'quiet enjoyment' and that the owner or his 'employees' did not have free access to the property during the term of the tenancy and, if they wanted access, they had to apply for it, giving plenty of notice.
They agreed and contacted the landlord. The landlord agreed and has been great ever since. The two times he has been on the property, it has been with our consent and he has been a great person to talk to.
I guess you wish you had our landlord ;)
Sorry to hear yours is such a dunnyroll

That was like the last place we were in. We were there for 8 years and never really complained about anything to the landlords. Most of the stuff that needed fixing, we did out of our own pocket and never asked to be reimbursed.
Then the landlords would send us letters about backdated rent increases (which is illegal by the way). Then the actual owners came back from overseas (their parents were taking up that role while they were away) and didnt know anything about the water restrictions so they had a go at us for not keeping the garden watered and healthy looking :|

aaaaaaaaaaand they put the rent up $15 a week, from $165 to $180, it's not worth that much. I honestly can't wait to get out. Our nieghbours are always reminding us that their daughter own the place and because of that they think they can do what ever they want to our place. We had a beautiful pony tail palm that was about 10 foot tall out the front in *our* gargen and the chopped it down and left a stump and they've butchered our poor frangiapanni tree. They wash their car with our hose, their grandkids are brats and throw stuff at us when we're outside. I found one of them in my garage once when the door was open. The neighbours are always spying on us. If someone knocks on my door they come to see who it is, if I'm chatting to someone one the driveway they just stand a few meters away and stare at us and listen to the conversaion. If I park the car in the driveway to unload something of to wash it or whatever the come out and watch, if I'm in the backyard picking lemons off the tree or hanging clothes out they'll stand on their balcony and watch what I'm doing.....like I said stange strange people.

When we first move there though we're going to move into my cousin's old house, huge place with a huge yard (and spa :D) and cheap as chips rent so that will suit us for the time being, only downer is that all my family, and I mean all of them (all 20+ of them) will be less then a 5 min drive away. :S

Kinnon, it reminds me of something I read recently - where a person in the UK had a German prisoner of war doing garden work for them (during the war).
The war was over - the prisoner had gone, spring came - and a whole bunch of daisies (or something similar) sprouted in their lawn - spelling out the words 'Heil Hitler'.
Your parting 'gift' could be a drum of round-up and a well thought message on the lawn...

I wouldnt be surprised if they try every trick in the book to stop you getting your bond back too.
Have you thought about talking to the RTA (cant remember if they have something different in NSW, legal studies was a year ago) about what you can do if they keep being privacy invading landlords?

Good idea John, I like that. Reminds me of a joke I read today about an ex wife leaving prawns and cavier in the curtain rods for her ex husband and his new girlfriend.
I wouldn't be surpised if we lose our bond. The RTA here is the Roads and Traffic Authority but I know what you're talking about. I don't know if I can really be bothered pursing it. I just ignore it all now and if I come home an fnd a tree missing I'm not suprised anymore.
I keep telling myself not much longer.....

We had our own case of lazy landlord when we were renting. They couldn't be bothered to do any maintenance around the place. We had complained numerous times about loose tiles in the bathroom to no avail. Eventually a tile fell off the wall when I was in the bath with my son. Luckily it missed both of us. This was the straw that broke the camels back, the real estate forced the issue by saying to the owner they would get someone in to completely remodel the bathroom and bill the owners. The owners didn't want that so came in one long weekend when we were way and stripped the walls and just put some laminate type product up. It at least removed the dangerous situation.
Then We had a long argument about what was wear and tear on a polished timber floor. They wanted us to pay for a complete new varnish of the floor - several grand worth. We got out of that one:D, but I still have a undeveloped roll of film I shot of the marks on the floor that were in dispute.

The RTA here is the Residential Tennancy Association (could be Authority) and they hold all rental bonds and tennancy contracts and agreements etc. I would imagine that there is something similar down there.

OK lets get the ball rolling early. I was thinking before that if we organised say, a weekend south of the border with enough notice then we should be able to get a few people in attendance. So lets see, a caravan park or somewhere near the coast that has holiday cabins perhaps? Then the next question, location?
We have the 300 page mark coming up soon and this could be a sort of celebration thing for it perhaps.
Thoughts?

Spent most of yesterday at antenatal classes with my wife Susan and playin my Wii(great fun, but im a bit sore for it this morning). But i did get to have a play with my flash just tryin to shoot some indoor shots by bouncing it off the ceiling. Here are a couple of my young son Connor with his spoils of war(actually only bowling trophies but he was so proud that he got 3). Still a lot to learn with the flash but im happy with these although there is still a little shadow to be seen.

Everyone, I'd like you to meet Mack. Not the best photo but he keeps following aaron and I everywhere and wont let us out of his sight!
Hey Kinnon you lucky devil. I love Labradors and Retrievers. Speaking of not letting you out of his sight...that might be because poor Mack has cataracts:cry: (to add to his woes). Probably that's why he doesn't want to lose you. I hope he sticks around with you for a while.:)

Hi All, so how's the week end been? I had a great day up at Abbey Medieval Festival, just doing the DB import of the shots now. Fantastic day for people photos.
Congrats to Connor for his trophies.

Yes I just started to PP a few images.
Here's a shot of a certain forum member who was busy photographing all the buxom fair maidens....

Paul, I love GR's too. The plan was to get one from a pup when we had the room, but this poor old fella needed attention asap. He had a clip and a bath today, he's so much happier now (and so is my nose). I went to go to the pet store to buy him a coat to wear but they were shut :( I pulled the old oil heater from under the house but it keeps tripping the power so I think I'll just have to wrap him in a blanket or something. He seems to go alright with his cataracts, just doesn't have the best night vision.
Tina, I acquired a stray dog. He's about 8 - 10ish and just gorgeous.

Lovely dog, Kinnon. I like that last shot - looks like he's already sick of you taking pictures of him :)
Looking forward to seeing more from the festival guys. Great shots.
Although Greg, after Paul's commentary on you, I couldn't help but notice that the focus in your shot seems to be slightly ... uh ... south of her face ;)

Thanks for the comments guys (I think ).
Here's a couple more from this Shuvani Romani Kumpania (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?p=3506157#post3506157). The first shot in the Romani thread is one of my favs from the day. I wish these events were on more often cause I have so much fun.

ohh looks like you both had fun at the Abbey.
I went to the ABC Birthday party and had a blast! Though with 4 concerts in 4 days and am on day 3 today I have way too many photos to go through.
Here is my first from today. It has made me realise how much I love my 70-200mm.

the colours and the contrast and the sharpness just makes me smile. I think the 24-70 2.8 is going to be in my bag quite soon.

I wish one would find its way into my bag during the night and a 70-200 as well :(
Oh well, just had the back of a tooth break off from around a filling. Tough choice now, fix the tooth or buy camera gear

Howdy ya'll. I'm back from camping at Inskip Point/Rainbow Beach. It was gorgeous, and I plan to go back again when I figure out how to protect the camera from the sand.
I met a few other photographers there too, one of whom was Andrew Gregory, who is a professional and does commissions for Australian Geographic. He's designed his own tilt-shift camera and I was lucky enough to be allowed to take a few shots with it.
What's been happening back here in ol' brisvegas?

Nice photos, everybody. Seeing some of the pics I regret not going to the Abbey Medieval thing, though I bought a polariser and flash bracket spirit level last week so I'm low on cash until Wednesday. I went out to Warner for the running day instead. Paul Davidson from BCG was there for a while.
The polariser fell apart on me when I was taking it off the lens. I bought it on Thursday, and it broke Friday night though I have managed to put it back together for now. If it breaks again I'm going to get it exchanged for a better one.
Welcome back Kelsey. I saw this camera guard thing last week at Ted's in the city that might do the trick. What camera do you have? The guard is for the 400D.
Sam - sorry to hear about the tooth. :(

Shame about the polariser, the bit about the spirit level reminded me that i want one of those too. :)

Very true. Waiting for wednesday would be a whole lot nicer if they actually paid good money too.

A few more shots from yesterday.:D Has anyone noticed my tendency to shoot head and shoulders portraits. I think about 90% of my shots are this type.
No.1 Druid
http://www.steadyhands.net/photogallery/albums/temp/image23013.jpg
No.2 William Tell maybe??
http://www.steadyhands.net/photogallery/albums/temp/image23023.jpg
No.3 This guy said he would have made a small fortune charging people who wanted to take his photo. You had to wait until he started to lower the horn or as Paul said it just looked like a rather large nose.:p

Ha ha like the comment :D Almost exactly the same shot is here in my Medieval Still Life (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=345805). I had zoomed in on the gauntlet more and used a midnight effect in PPing the shot.
