Has anyone noticed my tendency to shoot head and shoulders portraits.
You know, I was thinking that when I was looking at your first lot from yesterday.

Great shots people!

I want one of those fox skins! :)

Woohoo! Monthly competition judging night was on last night. I entered four images and got and Honor and two Merits. We had a judge who uses "Impact Judging" which means he was more concerned with the impact of the image and less with the technical details. Which is fortunate, because my images have lots of technical faults.

This was the Honor image...

I'm a little behind Greg and the others, but here are a few of my (novice) pics from the Abbey Fair on the weekend.

C&C welcome. Here's my self-critique:
#1 - I liked this shot, but his face is out of focus unfortunately; it looks like something is about to stab him in the neck, and I would've liked it more close in.

PS - It was good to meet you in person Greg.

Here is another 2 pics I thought were quite humourous. Don't know how to put 4 pics in one post, sorry.

#3 - "Who turned out the lights?" - I was also disappointed this seems a little out of focus :-(
#4 - "Killing, raping and plundering must've been thirsty work!"

Nice photos guys :)

Hey does anyone here have a Crumpler Customary Barge bag?
Looks like something I'd find handy travelling down to Wagga every second weekend ... just to put the camera, maybe one more lens and the flash in, as well as some normal clothes/etc.

Interesed in anyone's thoughts on it - how much you can fit into it/etc. What it's like?
If anyone has any photos it'd be massively appreciated!! :)

Cheers,
Mat.

Yeah I got a Customary Barge Mat.

It's quite good in my opinion. Just a bit small for all gear... so I got the hot tub (post pics of yours with your 5D!!!! :D

I'll post some pics of my barge if you like. I use a 5D w/Grip & 24-70 attached + a 100mm macro in the bottom section... the top can hold a laptop, and I used to put the hoods, rocket blower, 2 flashes, 50mm, 17-40 and other misc junk. If I borrowed a 70-200, it'd fit.

The model down (sinking barge) won't fit the 5D w/grip in the base section. Tried that ;)

Jeez, Paul, that's a killer shot!

Troy - the 'out of focus' effect you are commenting on may have been because you were shooting with an aperture of f/4 to f/5 and on the close objects (like the horse head) the depth of field is too small to get the whole object in focus. Which lens were you using? The 70-200? How far away was the horse head?

No matter what, I hope you enjoyed the day - it looks like it was a lot of fun.

70-200 f/2.8L IS - I was expecting the lens to take awesome shots all by itself ;-)

I reckon I was 5-7m from horse, and 10-15m from teh guy leaning on sword.

I just need practise I think. It was a fun day.

Sorry mate, I didn't meet you. I just saw someone walking around with a 70-200 white lens on it that fitted Greg's self-description and introduced myself. Okay, anyone want one of THESE (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/446772-REG/Sandisk_SDDRX4_CFR_Extreme_FireWire_CompactFlash_C ard.html)?

I got it from B&H because I needed a good CF reader for my laptop. However I failed to note that the little bugger doesn't work with a 4-pin firewire port, which is all I have. I'm sure there's a reason for it but it seems a bit silly to me that such a product, from one of the market leaders in flash media, suffers from this sort of limit in functionality.

P.S. I just calibrated my laptop monitor (for what it's worth) and boy is it going to take a little getting use to.

Yes I remember it distinctly. It was a frog floating among a lot of green water plants. Was that in B grade? The judges comment was that it was an overall, good image but the bright leaf in the upper right corner was distracting. Sorry but that was all he had to say. He seemed a bit confused himself about whether it was a merit or an acceptance and in the end, I wasn't sure what he awarded. But Paul Davidson will know, he recorded the awards.

Sound like it's exactly what I'm after ... I'd probably just want to put the 5D+grip with 24-70 attached+hood reversed and a 580EX in the bottom section if that'd fit .... then I could use the top section for any small amount of non-camera stuff I'd need to take.

Some photos would be great if you have some? :) Thanks Feng!

I think that's because the two extra pins on the bigger 6-pin connector provide the power, hence the 4-pin port won't work with anything that's bus-powered.

Yeah I'll see what I can cram in there. It's pretty tight with the hood attached, but you can fit it.... I think if you don't have the flash case you'll be right? I'll scope it out tonight for you and take a pic with my trusty point and shoot nikon POS :) Although, the flash fits much nicer up the top... but if you got a toilet bag/junk/clothes there, it gets a bit tight :)

Yeah, normal plug is 6-pin for 1394a and 9-pin for 1394b (you get both cables in the box). And yeah, I've only got the laptop now.
There might be an adapter out there but I might as well just grab the USB version and hopefully someone else can make use of this one.
I suppose if I used a powered hub it would work but that's not particularly travel-friendly. And I hate all these A/C adaptor brick-like things.

Zipped up bottom section (with above contents)... MX700 for size rough reference
http://stuff.planetslackers.com/imageshare/forums/20070711_customarybarge-0004.jpg

Top Section with 580EX again... and a 1L bottle... with laptop flap open
http://stuff.planetslackers.com/imageshare/forums/20070711_customarybarge-0005.jpg

Looking in.... plenty roomy
http://stuff.planetslackers.com/imageshare/forums/20070711_customarybarge-0006.jpg

I used to have in there...

- 24-70 hood
- 100mm macro hood
- 17-40 hood
- 2x580EX
- 50 f/1.4
- 17-40 f/4L
- Rocket Blower
and my friend 70-200 f/2.8L IS lying flat under it all

In the base I'd have...

- 5D w/Grip & 24-70mm f/2.8L attached
- 100mm Macro tucked in the side.
- 2 spare batteries for grip, 4 spare AAs
- Spare CF
- Caps

It'd still have room in the top for a jumper...

So In my opinion, it'd make a good overnight bag... with body/lenses and flash in base.... and then change of clothes, toilet bag, food, laptop etc in the top.

You can try mine out if you like before you buy one if you want to meet up somewhere... I'm in MacGregor. ;)

You know this is just rubbing salt in the wounds :(. Are you using 1394a? If so, imagine the speed of b.

So the card reader on the Dell monitor is pretty quick then? I'm still deciding whether I need an LCD at the moment and I like that feature with the Dell.
Having the USB ports on the monitor would be good too. Save me plugging/unplugging three or four cables into the laptop every time I want to pick it up.

The 24" looks nice but I'm not sure I really need to go that large again. It'd look enormous now after using my little 15.4" screen. I was thinking 20" but who knows.
Anybody here using a 24" Dell? How is the colour reproduction on it?

If you get round to timing it that'd be great but it's not that important so don't worry about it too much.

Anyway, here's a quick photo to share from last weekend - my little neice Sarah in a not so happy moment :D

A fair while ago I took a month off, boy was that good, but so hard to get back to work again. At one stage today I had three people queued up at my desk waiting to ask me questions. Don't you hate it!!! I just re-enabled comments on my online gallery and 30min later they get spammed. I disabled it some months ago because of this and had hoped that the latest release of Coppermine would have fixed this. Oh well, time to do some more research on the Coppermine sites to see what can be done about this.

Is it wrong to say now that my mother dropped my 70-200 f4L onto rocks whilst we were hiking the other week- it dropped, it rolled and I cried something chronic. Apart from the little ding on the end which makes it a bit harder to put the hood on, I swear the colours and sharpness have improved.

My 10-22 survived a fall. It was attached to the tripod and I was moving the tripod to an other location, it was as if it just jumped off of the tripod! On reflection it can't have been latched in correctly. I had the ball head tilted 90deg as I was taking shots of the morning sun on gum trees. This meant there was extra stress on the QR plate to start with. No damage though but it as mad me far more cautious.

Question for those who've calibrated their monitor (particularly any with laptops).

Does anyone have some blues (more toward the royal end of the scale) appearing a bit purple on screen?
I'm kind of thinking it's just the cheaper laptop screen that's probably making it seem like this because if I view it from a higher angle it all looks purple and from lower it looks blue.
Prior to calibration though the blue looked pretty right to my eye. So could it just be the warmer tones playing tricks with my eyes?

I think I'm going to need that desktop monitor.

Colours look pretty normal on the colour pallette here Nick... I haven't calibrated my work's laptop screen cos I use it with external monitors at work... (which ARE calibrated).

She was a wild galah on a birdfeeder at my parent's place, taken with a 70-200 @ 125mm and Sam's 20D. It's also reasonably cropped.

I'd like to pretend that I was really sneaky .... but I think the reality was that bird was a regular at the birdfeeder and had become semi-used to people.

Ladies and Gents, inside this calico cloth is 3kg of fruity goodness, so tasty you wouldn't even care if Santy didn't come....as long as you got seconds of pudding with a single malt whisky sauce!:D:p

Was this shot during the middle of the day Luke? The lighting looks harsh and there aren't many shaddows about. You could try to burn in some of the shaddows on the ridges of the hills. Not sure about the sky though.

I spent 12 years in PNG, my wife spent a lot longer :P
i grew up in png, and my (ex) sister in law comes from there, as does my 2 nieces. I left a long time ago though! Good luck to your nephew!

Cooking paul? Hey, you don't want to get divorced and married again do you? I hate cooking, and sure could use someone who can cook! Now where is that rolling around laughing smiley gone?

neat shots guys.

Meet 'Killer' hehe, but i tell you, those little dogs can play havoc with ankles!! some can be quite savage!

Hi Guys,

Just reworked one of my more favorite shots from this year. I'd be really interested to hear any feedback.

Hope everyone's had a great weekend! :)

Cheers,

hey matt, had a good w/e thanks. Cute piccie, love the face, but i feel the bright is a little too bright, and the dark a little too dark. Not sure how to fix it though. Lovely intense look on the face.

Wow, almost 24 hours went by without a peep. Good thing you stepped in when you did, Mat. :)
Love the shot of the bub. I like it as is. My eyes go straight to his - great job!

After a question from someone about getting cartoons from photos I was looking around the web and came across a great tutorial for achieving exactly that.
Here's a play I had with one of my shots from Thursday:

Here's the link to the tute if anyone's interested:

There's quite a few steps. I did it a couple of times then decided to make it into an action and now I've got nearly the whole thing automated.

Yes Tina...I'm domesticated...like a cat:D I love to cook to relieve stress...nothing makes you feel better than to beat the c**p out of a piece of meat with a tenderizer. It runs a close second to photography.:D

Your galah is fantastic! That 70-300 has an amazing depth of focus...look how narrow it is.

You love that shot don't you Mat? Is that the LOMO effect still....perhaps converted to "almost" black and white? I was going to say try cropping a little of the black area off the bottom, but it might throw the composition out.

It looks just a little like he/she's got a 5.00 o'clock shadow going on there in the jowels...maybe smooth it out a bit?

For impact, I really like it the way it is...gotta love the LOMO. Almost makes me want to buy one of those Russian cameras to try them out.

Well... I went to that site, Nick, and I downloaded the action - and ran it on a studio shot...

Hmmm - I have kept a bookmark and will go run the process manually when I get a moment.

'nuff said :)

John, I found that their action gives a distinctly different result (usually very disappointing) than running through the described process.
I just took the time to turn that process into an action and it works much better.

Yeah - that is what I meant by the more time comment - I'll troll my way through it.

Disappointing? lol - Nicely PC.

I guess I am too brash - I would have said bloody awful :)

Thanks for the feedback all.

Tina: It's kinda intentionally high contrast like that, but I think I'll do a version that's not as extreme and see how it looks. Cheers!

Hehe, yep, I do love it. I have about 8 different versions of it now :D

... and yep, well picked - Lomo and then Fred Miranda's BW Workflow Pro B&W conversion, but with a Red/Brown/Cyan/Black quadtone. Overly complicated, but I like it :)

I tried a few other crops to remove some of that dark bottom-left area, but none of them seemed to work for me. Unfortunately that's nearly full frame, so there wasn't a lot of cropping room-to-move. :(

Hello all.

At the moment im VERY VERY sleep, i spent all nite (4pm-3am) at the R.B.H. The reason you might ask??

Just call me dadda.....lol. My wife had a baby girl called Saianna Scarlet Sellick at 1.11am 15/07/07.
Sheree my wife did the hole thing drag free and in a lot of pain, but that is how she wished it. Saianna was 8.6 pounds at brith and 54.2cm long. She is one big baby...lol.

The giving brith was fun for me to be part of it. Alot of blood/water/and yakky stuff coming out after saianna like a fire hydrant. Sheree ended up ripping her vaginal open a bit and needed sew up.

I take a few photographs when i could, but there will be many more in the years to come. Not babys, baby shots.......lol
