Finally, a bit of banter :)

Luke, congrats :D Its certainly looking like new baby season. I know lots and lots of babies born over the last two weeks.

Went out to Bulimba yesterday with a few fellow flickrites. Came home with a few decent shots and more proof that my little old nifty has a little bit of a back focusing problem :( 100 and something slightly out of focus shots...

One that i was quite pleased with was this one,

The rest of the photos i have of the walk are here (http://www.flickr.com/photos/-spam-/sets/72157600831749057/)

Congratulations Luke it wont be long for me and my wife also. She is due to give birth to our 1st daughter in 3 weeks although looking at the size of her she could be ready to go any minute now. :D

Another daughter hey? The folks at Ashley & Martin sure will love us in 15 or 16 years time.

I held a friends D200 on the weekend and thats a damn fine camera, especially with the battery grip. Although i dont like the placement of the shutter button. It just felt awkward.

I do know one thing after holding it though, i want the grip for the 20D really badly :)

Yeah - my elder brother has the D200 - loves it.

It is a nice camera. I was looking at the fuji s5pro before i got the 20D. We know someone who works for the medical imaging side of fujifilm and i could get a decent discount on it.

I was thinking about asking my dad if he can loan me the extra so i could get it, but im still thinking a 10-20 would be a wiser move on the crop body.

Nah I'm not spending up... just if there's something which is a bargain, then I'd buy it. That 12-24 isn't REALLY a HUGE bargain, but it's not super expensive either... plus Dinuc wants my 17-40 (after his 50mm sells) I think.... so it'll be something to tie me down till I can afford a 16-35 II.

Thanks, used the 50mm 1.8 for that one.

That guy had that stuff posted on OCAU a few weeks back but removed it so he could advertise elsewhere.

I want his 24-70 and 70-200 so badly.

Oh and my dad was saying last night that because of some sales of some software that he has written, he will have some cash to burn on some new camera stuff. Pretty much got him into getting a 5D, 12-24, 24-105 IS and a 70-200 2.8 IS.

I might be able to score at least a non IS 70-200 out of it and maybe a 24-70 :D

hehe yeah the 12-24 is a trippy lens on the 5D :D I got it for $520 incl insured registered post from SA.

Nah... problem is I know there's a MkII which fixes the edge softness on FF cameras (wouldn't be an issue if it was 1.6x crop). So I'll just hang out for a Mk II. Oh and I can't see that thread :) not registered :|.

Anthony, still planning to go all primes with the 30D?

Still a bit unsure as to what to do. The 70-200 f/2.8 IS is the only lens I have at the moment and for indoor portrait / lingerie shots of the missus (I tell her I need the practise...lol) its a bit too long.

I was thinking of getting a 70-200 f/4 IS and a decent wide lens with the change and some money I have saved...(so around $1100.00 for a wide lens)..maybe a 17-85 IS and a Tamron 90mm macro?

Any suggestion?

Mat Fitzsimmons
17th of July 2007 (Tue), 05:50
Depends what you mean when you say wide ...

The 10-22 is a fantastic lens, but of you want something a bit more "normal", I'd suggest the 17-40 f4L, unless you want a prime, in which case the 24 f2.8 is quite good, or the 35 f1.4L if you feel like spending more. I think the Sigma 30mm is supposed to be OK too?

The canon EF-s 17-55 f2.8 IS. Its wide enough on a crop body and is a good walk around length. Its also fast enough for low light use and has the IS as an added bonus.

Siggy 30's are very nice (I have one) but it seems a bit of a lottery as to how good the one you get is. Mines ok. These things go in cycles and it's been quiet for a while about the Qual Contol on these, maybe they are a bit better?

Not to put anybody off the 17-55 IS but did you guys see the thread about removing the front element to clean the dust off of the inside - and there seem to be a few that have gone belly up on people in the wedding forum. Mind you, you always hear more of the complaints than the praise.

I'm starting a mental shopping list for a wedding I have to shoot in March next year. I've been asked to shoot my sister-in-laws wedding. Lens wise I'm reasonably happy, do want a portable storage device though. I did the guest shooter thing at my wife other sisters wedding last year. That was mucho fun and not a great deal of pressure. Kept me busy at the reception though - I was MC also. I'd intro the speakers and dash out with the camera to get some shots. Bit more pressure this time though.

I had a meeting today on L32 of the Comalco Bld in town. Wow, what a view, pity Ripiarian (sp?) Plaza was built as it spoils it a little. Don't think it would translate into a pano though.

Okay....ANNOUNCEMENT TIME! Brisbane Camera Group is holding an "Outdoor People Workshop" on Saturday August 25th at Fort Lytton National Park from 12.00 to 4.00 pm. We should have the park to ourselves.

There will be 15 models and heaps of experts on hand, to help out those in need of help, to photograph our 15 models. There is a chance that the Fort Lytton Society will provide some folks in period costume as well. We're trying to convince them to fire the main canon too...gotta work on that a bit more.

Cost will be $25 per photographer. It's open to all photographers. At this stage, we think that "extras" (non-photographers) who come along may have to pay the park entry fee of $4.50, but that will be clarified later. All photographers are welcome. Register your name with our co-ordinator by PM ing me and I'll give you his email address.

I can't remember how much they were, sorry ... but the legs were from Adorama, and the head (and plates/etc) were direct from RRS. Bought them all new.

I will swap you my Sigma 30mm 1.4 (a good copy) for it, I will even throw in a hair curler.Hmmmm, the hair curler is tempting me .... let me think about it ;)

She will probably be bearthed at Fisherman Island given her size. If so, then you would have to out through the sticks past Pinkenba. Its possible, but the roads are really rough out there and there is a lot of construction going on there too.

Although if she berths at the bulk sugar wharf/alternate cruise terminal like the USS Blue Ridge, then there are a few parks near it just off Lytton road.
