Yep, I'm coming on Sunday! :D
Natural Arch usually has water flowing through it and is quite photogenic. But it is a long way to go. But it is very scenic. But there aren't many places to eat. But it's close to the Gold Coast. But not that close really. But....
:lol::D:lol:

it's from 11.00, at the qsmee track. I have the invite and directions from them here as a word document reece, pm me your email address, and i'll forward it on. It's at warner, and they have some fantastic trains there. And a nice crowd of people too. You can buy lunch there too if you want. I'll be there for at least 2-3 hours. Hope you can make it, it's been a while!

I really have to get around to taking pics of Helen's bump. She's due (officially) on March 3, but because the bub is in a Transverse Breech position with cord prolapse, we're booked in for a Caeser monday week! :)
Mmmm baby.
I will take pics of her bump before she goes in.
Thanks for the thought though :)

You will need to clear all memory cards etc because you are about to enter the camera overload period where as a new dad you manage to give everyone around you flashburn!!
Good luck for Monday to both of you

Okay fellow foto makers,
I'm trying to put together a couple of classes on Studio Portrait Photography and am looking for expressions of interest. It's all very tentative at the moment and I'll keep you advised of progress.
The instructor will be a very accomplished portrait photographer from our camera club who has run many similar courses before.
It's a "basic" course designed to be an introduction to equipment and techniques.
Class size will be around 4 or 5, but there is a possibility of running multiple classes if lots of people are interested.
The proposal at the moment is for two NIGHT classes (one or two weeks apart) on a Saturday or Sunday night. The first will be a three or four hour stint going from 7 to 10 (11). It will cover such things as: what kind of lighting there is and how it's used, how the lights work and how they connect to the camera, how backdrops are setup and which ones should be used, which lenses work best and why..etc.
The second class will use a live model and be about 2 to 3 hours duration. It's more practical to give us a go at using what we learn and finding out a bit about poses etc. (No nudes...sorry fellas. Maybe another course, another day;))
The location is a fully set-up studio (a large separate garage) at a house in Boondall. This may change. If it IS here, the studio is available for hire should we all want to get together later on to try it out by ourselves.
The cost. Not totally sure yet, but we're looking at around $140 -$170 for the first class. A little less for the second one. (Depending on how many we get interested.) I know that sounds a lot, but for a fully set-up studio and instructor, it's not too bad.
Okay....who's interested?
It's BYO cameras and lenses, but between us, we should have all the right equipment if we share a bit.

It's they're booking it in Monday week (at this stage)... if she's a good little girl and rotates, then it'll be a natural birth at the start of march... but she's stubborn... so yeah... see how we go :)
@ Tina: Sunnybank Private. Apparently I can take my camera in.... fingers crossed :) hehhee.

Hello everybody,
My name is Rob, I was referred to this forum by a couple of people I was speaking to at my miniature train club (QSMEE) yesterday - namely Tina and Tony (?).
I was also provided with some information about the Brisbane Camera Group by Tony (If I've mistaken your name I am very sorry) - don't know about this month but probably the next.
My current camera is actually an EOS 3000N, though if I had the money I'd have a digital EOS =P.

P.S. - My father is the editor of the QSMEE's newsletter. No doubt he'll be interested in a few photos...

Would anyone be interested in a shoot of the drought? Like cracked earth and desert type places? Some places like Lake Samsonvale, Wivenhoe or Gold-Bush Lane?

Convert? I converted back to film from digital =P. My reasoning concluded that I'd get the grasp of ISO's, shutter speed, aperture etc from a film camera. My 3000N was only $200 when I bought it from the pawnbrokers - that was the primary motivation =P.
Though if I had the money at the time I would have bought a digital SLR. I had a Fujifilm S5500 for a couple of years and it was excellent. The best results have been posted on my deviantART profile - click here to see them (http://search.deviantart.com/?section=browse&qh=boost%3Apopular+age_sigma%3A24h+age_scale%3A5&q=by%3Acarjo+S5500).

Oh so Dale's the friend! That makes sense now - I recall him asking Tina how many shots she had taken. He's a good bloke :) . Also, if you think his steam loco (the Southport one) was good - you should see his diesel! Way more detailed.
And I'm rambling =P
I'm Kelsey, Tony's daughter.
The girl who was trying to get the hat of your brother and vice versa? Ah yeah I remember =)
I was the young guy with the grey camera sitting on the orange and green loco having a good chuckle =P
Also, this "shoot of the drought" idea sounds interesting. Let me know if you start organising anything.

Feel free to ramble..... that's what this thread is for. I cruised by your gallery. You've got some nice work there. Hang around us here long enough and well convince you to go back to digital again. The 3000 is a great camera to work with though. Soon you'll be able to pick up 300D just as cheaply, just have to take pot luck with the number of shutter actuations though. There is a reasonable chance that it will fail about 20000 - not definite that for sure as there have been many people get 5000+ out of it.
Stop by here or we can PM or email you if you want to come on some of the other outings. I suggested a rainforest type walk and Justin has just mentioned Natural Arch, this can get a little busy with Japanese tourists and I've heard the tour guides are a bit possessive about not letting other in.

Kelsey, you've already filled three hard drives with roughly 17% of the total number of photos you've taken? Good thing you don't keep them all or you'd have hard drives stacked to the ceiling.

...it made me think that if ever one of these beautiful mini locos blew a boiler (heaven forbid) it'd turn you from a rooster to a hen in no time flat. :D
That's if it doesn't kill you. :p
Most boilers operate at 100psi (700kPa). Using that as an example, for a loco to be allowed to run at a club it must pass a hydraulic test, where water is pumped into the boiler until it reaches twice it's steam working pressure (in this case 200psi). It is then left for 20 minutes, and if it isn't leaking or if the needle on the inspector's gauge HASN'T moved then it passes the first test. Next stage requires that the loco undergo a steam test to test the safety valves with a red-hot fire and the blower (a stimulator for the fire) on full.
Put simply, if it doesn't totally collapse before or at 200psi with water and the pressure safety valves work correctly then all should be fine. Tests are undertaken every three years with copper boilers and 1 or 2 years with steel (not sure which as I don't have much to do with steel boilers) by a qualified boiler inspector.
This boiler inspector also inspects the drawing before construction of a boiler can commence to ensure that the design complies with the national code which is based on physics calculations, which even then are overcalculated, i.e. they are in essence stronger than they have to be.
But in the event that a loco runs out of water, they are fitted with a fusible plug made of solder. if the water runs out and the boiler heats up further (the water naturally cools it down even at operating temperature) the solder melts and the pressure escapes and cannot build up again till it is repaired and goes through both tests again.
So you shan't need worry, we've got the bases covered. :)
BTW... I believe someone has a photo or two of me driving around. Most notably someone who was wearing a grey vest or shirt. I'd like to see it if you'd please :)

Greg, you always seem to be one of, if not the, first poster after an outing. Mind you, with quality shots like the Southport one above, I'd be eager to share them as well.
Thanks Nick. I must have a quick workflow - a while ago I started to record some actions for the tasks that I was always doing to images in Photoshop. I then combined these into one action I call Auto Everything. This runs on just about every image and I then just turn off layers that don't work. It doesn't do Levels, Curves or USM sharpening, but adds Levels and Curves layers. I then tweek these to suit myself.
I meant to ask you but I forgot  You mentioned doing most of or all of your work on your laptop. How does Photoshop and other related programs (Lightroom, etc) run on it? I'm considering an upgrade of my desktop to a notebook and was wondering what sort of specs would be ideal for running PS on it.
Here's the laptop specs. It's Dell bought throught works salary sacrafice deal.
Intel® Centrino® Duo Mobile Technology with Intel® Core™ Duo Processor T2300 (2MB Cache, 1.84 GHz, 667MHz FSB)
Genuine Windows® XP Pro Edition
1MB DDR2 SDRAM
ATI Radon Graphics Card
120GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
15.4" Wide Screen XGA TFT Display (1280x800 res.)
It has slowed down a bit since I first got it, but this is usual. It runs photoshop with no problems. I've thought several times about adding another Gig of ram to it about never have. Viewing angle is important, tilt the screen the wrong way and all of a sudden your images are under exposed. The HD is now about 80% full. Just about time to buy an external HD.
I also run IMatch on it. This can be pretty intensive when it is indexing the photos. Can take 2-3 minutes to do several hundred images, but after that its ok. Mind you, when it's indexing you can still continue to do other stuff.

Hi everyone,
Just wanted to come here and say g'day and that I'm from Brisbane also. I'd be interesting in coming along to any shoots that you organise - am presently on the north side.
I've been into photography for a long time and it all started when I took photography as a subject in Grade 10. I thought it would be my 'bludge' subject and it turned out to be the one that I worked the hardest in because I loved it so much.
I got my 400D for Xmas and I have been unable to put it down since. Am still learning the ropes but am always willing to learn - and practice!
Anyway, just wanted to say hello.

We're organising an outing to Natural Arch, as well as an outing to somewhere affected by the drought, so those will probably be in the near future.

welcome Rhi, make sure you stick around here, and keep checking info about upcoming shoots etc. Nice story about how you got into photography. I got into it at the end of 2005 and read lots of books from the library, searched for a photography forum in google and joined up to this one in January (2006) :D I got my 350d in April last year and like you, I can't put it down. I was in year 10 last year and unfortunately my school didn't have photography as a subject and that is all I want to do. So this year I am doing Certificate IV in Photo Imaging at tafe and really looking forward to it!

Might have been green... hard to tell when driving a loco. It was a long-sleeved shirt though :). Did you have a light-coloured lens? Like a white or grey maybe?
Anyway, I was wearing a dark blue short-sleeved shirt with faded blue cargo shorts. I had a white badge on my left shirt pocket and was not wearing a hat (I have short hair). I was driving this loco:
http://www.geocities.com/carjo_3000/trackandtentsunday59edit.jpg
My father was driving it too, so you might also have some of him. He was wearing a light blue cotton corporate-style shirt with long sleeves, dark trousers and black boots. You'd probably have more of him - he drove it longer than I did.

hehehehehe... most of my year 12 IPT classes were spent just browsing the internet. Purely because for about a term we had a hopeless teacher, the other 3/4 of the time (with the original teacher) the material was taught quicker than the teacher had expected. I have a photo of the teacher (who was the IT HOD or "God" as she has been referred to as) looking on while four or five people play some multiplayer internet game! During her class! But she was a good teacher - she has that "gift" which makes students want to go to her class. :)

thanks paul! funny you should mention that, the judge last night hinted i should be in a grade (mind you, only over my white rose, and she still didn't give it an honour!), and i'm going, no way! There are friendly murmurs amongst the ab graders, but i intend to see the year out in ab, as i really am not 'a' grade standard. There is a big difference! and big between honours and merits, and i am only getting merits. But... it is my aim though.

Way to go Tina, very well done.
I would have liked to have gone on Sunday but I spent most of the day asleep as I had a big night on Saturday at a charity concert. Looks like you all had a fantastic time and those trains look quite amazing.
Paul, if there is still room I wouldn't mind putting my name down for studio weekend. If not this time, next time for sure.
ahh the days of IPT, we always had to do work in IPT but we used to have this "study lesson" called tech tutes - which was 2.5hrs a week of free computer or chat time.
I am off to NZ tomorrow for a wedding get back on Tuesday morning. I hope to get quite a few nice photos whilst I am there.
This is one of my favs from the other night. This is Emma Dean, a gorgeous local singer.
The lighting at the Troubadour is very shall we say patchy. Since it has a really low ceiling, there is no lights from above just lights on the floor plus lamps. Lots of fun.

As some of you may or may not know, wifey is due to have a baby. The original due date was 2 March 07, but due to the baby being in a Transverse Breach lie with Cord Prolapse, it's due for a Cesarean section on Monday 19 February 07.
Here's some "before" shots of her... one with her being somewhat itchy and not knowing I was taking a pic, and the second of her posing the roundness :)
Now the quality is very very very poor for some reason... Did POTN drop their image allowances for attaches? or has it always been 100k? Normally don't attach but on transition to the Mac, i misplaced my host's password :(
Edit: Infact, itchy was soooo poor, i removed it. Will up them again when my host has been restored so to speak.

Ah I see. Now that I think of it, sitting on the tender might have been too close to get it at a decent angle. That's the reason why the cabs of most locos have a sliding section in the roof - it's too hard to see otherwise - us humans are so darn tall ;)

I agree Greg, that one was one of my favourites as well. I think he was the F-111 pilot too, if I remember correctly.
Here are a few signal/signs from the day (I really like the first one :)):

Yeah he does fly F-111's. He's a good example of how many people from the hobby comes from such diverse walks of life.
The photo is typical of the humourous tone of the club :) The ants moved their crossing 1 metre north during the workday the previous week according to my father. That explains the two ant trails - there is usually one. :)

i was told he has the slowest train there, which amuses me, cause he fly's the fastest plane! He zooms thru the skies, and put-put's on his train!
good shots nick

Nice shots Nick, that first one is real good. Strangely enough it look just like a miniature model! This shot and some of mine remind me of that technique people use to make shots look like miniatures - except ours are real.
thanks for the comments Tina.

I caught the end of getaway tonight and there was a segment on the Binna Burra Lodges and it looks veeery nice! Is there still a camp being organised for that?
Oh oh and I've got another very interested buyer in my business so fingers crossed this one doesn't fall through then I'll have a lot more time and energy for photography.

I know just what you mean, Greg. I love the results people come away with using that miniature technique.
Here's a few more of my shots (of the actual trains this time) over in Transportation. (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=277146)

Hi everyone,
Ok well I did it. Last night I bought studio lighting. AAAAARRRRGGGHHHH! Very scared now, I wonder if this now takes my photography beyond being just a "hobby" and more into the "obsession" category. haha.
Anyway, it should arrive in about a week. Very nervous :-)

That's a nice photo, Tina.
What did you end up ordering, Rhi?

I'm not sure of the brand (gee, that's a good start!) but it's a kit - 2x 300W flash lights, 2x stands, 2x softboxes, 2x silver umbrellas, 2x white umbrellas. I also bought a background stand along with a black and white muslin backdrops.
$957 in total which I didn't think was too bad considering backdrops are about $199 at Photocontinental...
Just an ebay purchase, hence the nervousness. I now need a light meter... And the wish list goes on ;-)

Lol Greg, you remind me of me when I got my first PDA. I was all excited about being able to surf the net where ever I was. But then I got my first phone bill which was about triple what it usually was, but it definatley was fun!
