Most legislation isn't too bad if you break it down. But whatever you do, don't venture into taxation law. You'll give yourself a hernia just trying to lift the paperwork
Yeah that's what I do. I start by separating some of the sentences into smaller parts.
go wide. you know you want to.

And speaking of legislation I'm reminded of one of my favourite sections of the Criminal Code Act. Is anyone else here a JP? Read on for your 'duty' in case you ever come across an unlawful assembly :):

Hah! That was the first thing my GF told me about the place after she went there with her mum one night.

The ones in the city usually react favourably if you point a camera at them. I once saw a bunch of jap tourists (with tripods and all) set up in front of them and start taking photos

I'd say that sort of result is odds-on favourite.
But you can feel comforted by the fact that subsection 2 and 5 provides a maximum sentence of life imprisonment for anyone who prevents you from making the proclamation. Of course, that's if you have any feeling left after being beaten to a bloody pulp :)

I was talking to my dad about it and we came to an agreement that it might have more to do with the current exchange rate. I would have expected prices to drop after they announce the new model (which will probably be happening at the next trade show at the end of August)

Hey Nick, thanks for the interest! I've been around, just been more of a lurker of late more than anything. Working nights is really taking it out of me.

hmmm.....photo business....I picked up my business cards last week.....and that's about it. :o

At the moment for me it's a bit of a case of be careful what you wish for... I said I'd find some casual jobs, work my arse off, save up some money, blah blah blah. Now with my 2 jobs I'm working heaps of hours, loooong days (like 13 hrs a day) and weekends so I haven't really had a chance to do anything. I can't even remember the last time i picked up one of my cameras.

But I can't wait now I've got contacts because yes, I'll be able to see what I'm doing a whole lot better! I'm thinking of going to knockrow castle (like a smaller version of currumbin, but closer to me) end of next week so I can show my cameras some love.

mmm there is only one suggestion.

Young man, I was once in your shoes.
I said, I was down and out with the blues.
I felt no man cared if I were alive.
I felt the whole world was so jive ...

That's when someone came up to me,
And said, young man, take a walk up the street.
It's a place there called BHphoto.
They can start you back on your way.

It's fun to stay at the shop.
It's fun to stay at the shop.

They have everything for young men to enjoy,
You can hang out with all the boys ...

It's fun to stay go go wide
It's fun to stay go go wide
Young man, there's no need to feel down
Young man, pick yourself off the ground

It's fun to play Wiiiiiiide
It's fun to go go go wide
Young man, are you listening to me?
Young man, what do you wanna be?

go wide
you'll find it at the shop
no man, does it all by himself
young man, put your pride on the shelf

go wide
then just go go go WIDE
go wide
young man, i was once in your shoes
go wide

I do a lot of my macro shooting in the back yard, although the pickings have been very very slim lately. I so want to go out and shoot some bugs. I guess if macro isn't at the front of your thoughts though you may be better off looking at what other glass would better suit you style.

I hope so Nick, because everyone here is going to owe me an "I told you so" because I hate coles, it's just such a horrible place to work for, especially after working at Bunnings, where they are all for teamwork and making sure their employees are happy. I can't wait to tell them what to do with their job. So I figure the more I work, the more I can save and the quicker we'll get to melborne.

Mmmm, finding the energy is the hard part. And because I start at coles at 4.30 each day is a pain in the arse becase I miss the best part of the day, and I drive the back roads to work so I drive through all this beautiful country and it's just cruel! But yeah, I think I'll just have to get my arse into gear and just do it. Keep your eye out at the end of next week for some new photos.......

I try to live by Audentes Fortuna Juvat, it's the McKinnon family motto (my grandmothers side of the family and the origin of my name). My maiden name which was Smollett motto is Adhuc Viresco which has a similar meaning as well, so it's all very fitting. Unfortunatley though my married name (Bell) has no motto :(

Yeah...there's new contact lenses appearing on the market every day.

As an interesting aside; Hoya make excellent spectacle lenses and just average camera filters, while Nikon spec lenses are crappy, their camera lenses have always been top notch (sorry fellas but let's face facts here). Kodak also make spectacle lenses and they're crappy too. Carl Zeiss make excellent spectacle lenses and the world's best camera lenses. Canon don't make spec lenses at all...which surprises me...but then their camera lenses have patchy quality and I include L lenses in that too. Pentax camera lenses are very well made and seem to have been always good quality, but their spec lenses are very:(

Couple of pages ago I mentioned the slide 2 unlock thingy I'd installed on my pocket PC phone. Here's a screen capture of it with a Transformers (the Movie) wallpaper. The little sun thing is the current weather forecast and it will also do caller id, and other things like icons for sms and emails.

haha I did it, but I was a tad more diplomatic. ;) Unfortunately I'm planning on transfering to another Woolworths Ltd company (probs Tandy or Dick Smith Electronics) this time around, so I might not get a chance. :(

I need help people.....I'm going to be spending my money on something other than photography....you see, I have this other obsession and it's jewellery, and working in a jewellery store is not helping the cause. In the past I just ignored them all, out of sight out of mind.

But it's my birthday coming up shortly and with my birthday money I was going to get some more batteries and memory and a couple of other bits and pieces....but.... now I've started working at te jewellery store I'm finding all this stuff I want.

In the past the way I used to measure how badly I wanted something is ask myself the question do I want this more than a CPL, or a 5D or whatever the flavour of the moment was and the answer has always been a firm no with me not spending my money. But now.....it's like do I want this new ring or a tripod and it's becoming a tough decision!

Work has a VIP night coming up at work and the discounts are going to be 50% off everything, people, I need help to be strong and stay focused......

Ha, I wish Aaron would even consider getting me jewellery for an occasion! He thinks it's a waste of money (says he who has just spent nearly a grand on deep sea and heavy duty fishing gear and he doesn't even go deep sea fishing or fish for anything big, his reason "just incase I need it one day....." pfft  at least I'd wear my jewellery everyday). I was lucky to get an engagement ring out of him!

I don't know whether this is what you want to hear but I'm going to say get the jewellery. (I'm sure things will start flying at me now for such a response :D)

I don't like the sound of #1 above because it comes across as more of an impulse buy. No doubt it'll please you for a while but just consider whether you'll be wishing you had the forgone photo items in the near future. I don't think you will.

#2 suggests that your priorities have shifted slightly and that, I think, is understandable given the lack of time you have to shoot and therefore the perceived value/usefulness in the photo equipment, such as a tripod, has decreased. It also suggests that the tripod, etc are not needed this instant.

Noting the little time you have available for photography at the moment, and into at least the short-term future, I personally think that you'll get more enjoyment out of the jewellery. It may be short-lived to a degree but a tripod sitting in the corner is going to bring you less satisfaction and you're still going to be looking at the jewellery each day (or whenever you work).

So once again I say get the shiny stuff. Just don't go crazy and you'll save up enough again in no time for the photo equipment you want. :)

Of course if you pop the monies into savings, be strong and skip the b'day gifts for a year that could mean one or two weeks less you have to spend working 13 hour days . . . decisions, decisions :(

Continuing the cute nephew theme.
Nice shots, Greg. I like the order of the photos.

As far as long stuff goes, my dad has a 70-200 f4 that i can borrow if need be and a tamron 100-400 (pretty crappy) there if i need it.

Nice shots, Greg. I like the order of the photos.

I like your thinking, it makes a lot of sense.

I was talking to aaron about it tonight I'm very happy with my gear, for a looong time all I wanted was a 5D, 24-70 and 70-200 2.8 IS, and I have that now. All I really want/need is a decent tripod, a couple of gigs more memory and some more batteries. But like you said I don't have the time or energy for it at the moment and I can get by on what I have now.

I'm not really an impulse buy person, I sit on it and think about it for ages before I do or don't go through with it, I guess i'm lucky in that respect.

The reason behind all this is that pretty much since they day I got married I've hated my wedding band, it doesn't match my engagement ring and I like things to match. So what I want to do is get another band made from scratch to match my engagement ring and also eternity ring. So this is something I've been thinking about/wanting to do for over 12 months now, and I guess with working at A&C I have the opportunity to get it at cost price, makes a lot of sense.

I guess what's making the decision hard is I feel like I'm betraying photography which has always been a big part of my life, and I would like it to still be a big part, but my other jobs have taken over at the moment.

Geh, it's all just so hard!

I don't mind working the long days so much, they go by pretty quickly, I just wish coles wasn't a part of that day, but I still got the money from it

Fantastic shots Justin. The Dickie Beach shot has beautiful balance and composition. Do you remember what exposure settings you used? Since the sunrise isn't a real colourful one, I reckon that shot would look excellent as a B&W too. Lots you could do with it. The glassware shot is a beaut too. You'll have to enter some into club competition.

I made mine from scratch after seeing someone else's that I liked - it was pretty easy to make, just a few layers in photoshop which I just drag onto the image when ready. I need to have a play with recording it as an action to make the process quicker though.

I have to admit.. i saw helens watermark and really liked it.. so i did a similar thing, but changed it to fit with my likings (i.e. one word instead of two + the two shades for first and last name).

i have a saved psd with the layers (just like helen said) that i drag onto the photos as i see fit. sometimes if the watermark text does not fit, ill revisit the colours i use.

Weird..

I had it a bit on the 30D with the 50 f/1.4 but if you focus twice on One Shot mode, it sorts its life out normally... When I use the 85 f/1.2 on the 30D it doesn't do it at all. So I dunno if it's a wider than 2.8 issue. :|

Hi Justin, I'm considering going to Uni next year to do a BA in Photography, but I'm unsure if I'll get in (crappy OP), I've considered TAFE too.
Can you tell me what your impressions of the TAFE course have been?
I'm particularly interested in the practical aspects of the course as well as the level of equipment TAFE provide ie: studio lighting, dark room, large/medium format etc.

Any insider info you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Well, back from another weekend in not-so-sunny Wagga Wagga. Miserable weather all weekend really, but still fun :)
Got a few more piccies of my little neice, I'll have to sort through and see if there's anything OK.

Looks like it's been a bit quiet up here??

Taken down at The Spit recently...

I think Feng covered it quite nicely there.

Ok, hypothetical. Say i was going down to Indy at the gold coast, what lens would be more useful. Somthing in the 70-200 range or a sigma 100-300 f4?

How come Feng is so mean to you all the time? I mean...he won't share his beer and he's always slapping you etc. I bet he stole your umbrella while you were on the beach...giving you heat stroke.

Although if i cant hit him up for one, how much do you reckon a second hand older sigma 70-200 f2.8 would go for? Given a near new macro version would go for around $850-$900

I, too, agree. Why would anyone want to steal it? The only thing it's good for is cleaning down the barbie plate. :D How you people drink that stuff, I have no idea

For al those interested and with Pay TV - Monday nights @ 7.30pm. The "How To" channel has a show called The Big Picture. It covers a bit about photoshop and printing etc. Seemed OK and any show that features photography is a step forward in my opinion.
