Anyone here know where i could possibly hire a Sigma 100-300 f/4 EX? I want to buy one but im skeptical about it and would like to try one first at a full event so i can do some proper comparisons with my prime.

lol but i alrdy have the 300 f/4L IS, and i wanna get rid of it!!! I would consider the 100-400 but its low light capabilities and the fact its $700 more than the sigma dont go down to well.

70-200 f2.8L IS and a 400 f5.6L makes a nice combo :D
buy one of each, it's only money - you can't take it with you

But from what I've read those Sigma tele-zooms are supposed to be pretty good, especially considering the discount on the Canon equivalents (or nearest to)

I'm DEVASTATED I tell you....just DEVASTATED. My beautiful, beloved, fantastic, wonderful IBM buckling spring keyboard, that I snaffled from the newspaper office my sister worked in way back in 1999...has....has...sniff sniff...died. :( :( BWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH. All that time I lovingly protected it and made sure nobody touched it or came near it with coffee and stuff. I caressed it regularly and cleaned its little fading keys and treated it like a real woman should be treated.
I was cleaning all the "board chow" out of it today (I don't know how it all got in there) and I carelessly dropped it :(
I've tried HUNDREDS of keyboards and nothing comes close to the feel of that one. An I just loved its little "clicky" sounds. So comforting. Sniff. So if any of you computer guys out there see an OLD IBM comp being dumped...will you grab the KB for me and make me a happy old man again please?
On a happier note...so much breadcrumbs and other stuff came out of the board...I think I have enough for another christmas pudding ;-)

Paul, there was a keyboard that came with older Fujitsu computers about 4 or 5 years ago that was perfect. the keys felt great and it had just the right about of curve to it.
The government and police department used a lot of them and my dad snatched a few up when they were throwing a heap out ages ago. Could try one of those if you find one.

Thanks for the thought, but only an IBM Model M with those lovely clicky keys will do....I think there's still plenty on eBay, but I might have to get one from US. :(

I found some at www.clickykeyboards.com and www.pckeyboard.com The last place makes "new" keyboards to IBM's old standard. They look pretty good and will probably be what I get. But they charge a lot for shipping 'cos these little buggers weigh a couple of kilos each.

You will never EVER get an old IT person to part with an IBM M-series keyboard!Well I can understand that. It does happen though because there's a website in the US that just sells refurbished IBM kb's from the 80's and 90's so someone must part with them...(and then wonder why).
I'm much happier now that I have ordered two of the "new" ones made to IBM's specs:D I may even get a couple of IBM 'originals' from the clickykeyboards.com website as well.

Yup! Jackie Ranken emailed me recently to say that the next course is set for May and September next year. They're increasing the length of the course to five days and I think she said the first one (May?) will be based in Queenstown with day outings from there. I'm going to contact her to find out more info. I'll let you kno....err know....(Damn crappy keyboard...grrrrr:D)

As an interesting side-note; I was upgrading one of the computers at work here yesterday and I had to format the new hard drive and reinstall Windows XP. I only had an old copy that came with the original comp and it was about three yrs old. When I hooked up to Windows Update, it needed SIXTY ONE updates. By the time it had downloaded update No. 10, it was so downloaded with viruses that it shut down and won't restart :-( New copy of Windows on the way.

Apparently not! It's only a "client" type comp on our peer-to-peer net at work. But I had it connected to the cable broadband at home to download the updates...but even that wasn't fast enough. I'll put the firewall and antivirus software on first this time:rolleyes:

Quote: The dates have been set May 16-17 and October 17-20 2008. So at this stage we still have a four day workshop. The costs were looking a little to high for the extra night, ( Kinloch has put there fee up by $30 per day as it is, from this year).
What I propose( I haven’t talked to Mike about this because he is away in Wellington) is that for that for those who would like to stay for an extra night, then Mike and myself would stay for the whole day continuing the workshop till 4pm. Then hop off back to Queenstown. End Quote

I've got one of their PW wireless kits that I use with my 580. I'm thinking I'll probably pick up another one because I'm looking to grab a 580ex II for a 2nd light.

We've got those without the flashes.... problem is, you'll need the off shoe mount thing too... or an adapter as the 430 doesn't have a remote cord thingy does it? 580 doesn't, but 580 II does.
We ended up using them for the bowens anyways (which i haven't even played for).

Just be careful...I'm guessing that's US dollars they're talking about and you have to pay shipping which could be a lot. Have a talk to the people at Dragon Image in Brisbane. They should be able to put together a "starving student" package similar or less in price to that and you can pick it up yourself.

I think the shipping for mine came to about 60 USD. So yeah it does add a bit extra to the cost. And that's a very good point about Dragon. I almost went to them myself but the savings on the Pocket Wizards from MPEX more than paid for the shipping charge.
And I agree with you Sam, the radio triggers they have on their site seem a little too expensive for what they are.

Just got back from the Ortho Specialist for Aaron's knee. It locked up on him a couple of times yesterday and is sore and swollen today. May have another meniscul tear and he has to have a MRI tomorrow. He's taking it reasonably well, considering even if there is no damage he'll be off active sports for at least two months.

Greg, I hope Aarons knee isnt too bad and that he isnt out of sport for any longer than the 2 months. I was devastated when i broke my elbow a couple of years ago to find that i couldnt play soccer for the rest of the season or he next.
Looking at umbrellas and light stands from dragon, would i be right with a 1.8m stand and a 36 (im assuming inches) dull silver umbrella?

Boy, Aaron's really having a rough trot. Hope it's not too serious. At least with an 11:40pm MRI they wouldn't have any trouble with him moving too much. Fall asleep as soon as he hits the table.

I suppose that depends on what you're wanting to light. I've found the white shoot-thru umbrella to be the most useful for me. Shooting through allows you to get a relatively large light source much closer to your subject than bouncing out of an umbrella would do. Therefore softer lighting. But, again, it depends on what you're looking for and shooting.

What's wrong with the one from Dragon? It seems to be a similar sort of thing but it looks like you'll need to get hold of a cold shoe adaptor to hold the flash.
PC does list the Manfrotto umbrella swivel (stock code: 116355180000) but it appears to be out of stock. But I think you still need to find a shoe adaptor for that as well.

The strobist one has the 2 knobs on the back and a third one one the side for another hole for the umbrella to go in. The one from dragon doesnt have the extra hole, so i was left a bit confused.

Question: Why would you buy a Sigma 12-24 f:4.5-5.6 and not a Sigma 10-20 f:4.5-5.6?
12-24, because if you had a Canon 24-70 f/2.8L and a 70-200 then you'd have everything from 12mm to 200mm. Sure, you'd have no overlap but at least you're not missing anything. That's one reason to buy it.
And as been already stated, the 12-24 will work on full frame and APS-H (1.3) cameras. That's the main reason why I'd buy it - it means I could use it on the 3000N.
EDIT: To answer your second question, wouldn't it be possible to make some sort of wide-angle converter that cancels out the 1.6 crop, i.e. a 0.625x tele? (assuming my maths is correct)

Probably because once you go FF, you suddenly lose all interest in anything to do with APS-C :D
I personally think 16/17mm is as wide as I think I'd use on a FF body, so there's no APS-C lens I'd want anyway.
Although Nikon have something similar on some of their D2 cameras - only to allow for a higher framerate "crop" mode though.

Yeah, but a APS-c sensor comes in might handy when you put that 400mm lens on your camera and it suddenly becomes a ....errrr...(carry the one and add on six...reaches for calculator...) 640mm lens equivalent. Wouldn't it be nice to have the best of both worlds?

I could do that now with my 400mm lens though, but just cropping an APS-C-equivalent-sized section from the middle of the FF image (I think?? - it's late :))

This is like digital zoom AFAIK, remember the size of the photosites remain the same and you are just looking at a smaller number of them more closely.

I think Mat's right in his comparison to just cropping an equivalent size from the FF picture. There's no interpolation because the image isn't being resized, it's just being cropped.
This is different to digital zoom on cameras because I think what they're doing is essentially taking a crop of a fewer number of pixels and upscaling that image in camera to the normal sensor size.
Mat Fitzsimmons
3rd of August 2007 (Fri), 19:58
Yup, I was just comparing:
- Paul's original suggestion of having a FF sensor that can reduce the area of active pixels down to APS-C size, with
- cropping an APS-C sized section from the middle of a FF image.
I think it's the same thing, because you'd be using the same pixels either way. You're just cropping away those "inactive" pixels instead of not using them in the first place.
i.e. lets say an APS-C-sized section in the middle of a 5D sensor contains 8MP (I dunno how the maths works out ... it's too early :))
Then, cropping an 8MP section out of the centre of a 5D image would give you the same thing as if the camera had an 8MP APS-C sensor.
I know you guys understand this, but here's a bit more: http://www.paullesterphoto.com/wordpress/?p=566
Of course if it could add more pixels in as it reduced the active area, then that would be a different story! :D

Of course if it could add more pixels in as it reduced the active area, then that would be a different story! :D
So what we need is a new generation sensor that can dynamically shift and resize the individual photo-receptors to cover just the active area. I like it :D

Hehe, yep and yep :)
I've got an Eizo CG210, but I'm still trying to find time to take it back to Kayell - it has a bad backlight leak in the bottom left corner, which I'm distinctly unimpressed with (and has soured my experience with it, to be honest). I'd expect better for the $$.
Nick C.
3rd of August 2007 (Fri), 20:54
You've just answered my next two questions as well: Which model? and How do you find it? :)
I'm curious because I've shifted my monitor search into overdrive now that I've discovered just how bad laptop screens are at reproducing a decent range of colour.
I've sort of narrowed it down to one of the NEC 90 series or pay a bit more for one of their Spectraview models or an Eizo. The higher end features of the Spectraview and Eizo such as hardware calibration and colour/brightness uniformity are appealing but I'm not sure that they're worth what is almost a 100% premium in price.
If anyone else has any impressions/experience with NEC/Eizo I'm all ears.

It's annoying that you have to go through these sort of troubles especially considering the price you have to pay for such a high-end piece of equipment.
Question: (that is catchy :)) How does the 'hardware-based portrait mode' work? Does it automatically change the resolution to 1200x1600 or do you still have to manually do that yourself? Just thinking that if it was a quick process it could be useful for editing those portrait oriented shots.

Here I am! I've been busy building a computer for work and haven't been able to get to the forum much.
QUESTION:Why is it that installing and configuring hardware (and software) is NEVER as easy as they say in the manual?
My impressions of the 2180UX are all good. It's replacement is the NEC LCD2190UXI. It's so easy to calibrate and has such a clear screen. I like that I can rotate it 90 deg for editing images shot in portrait mode and yes the software rotates the screen 90 deg. (That's my only gripe..you have to do it by clicking on the video card icon in the system tray and select "rotate image".)
I saw the Eizo Coloredge 24 first hand at F Stop Imaging (now defunct) and I felt it was a magnificent monitor for image editing, but I just couldn't justify the extra thousand or so it costs (in 21" form). If you want to see one for yourself, I think Kayell have one working in the showroom...but I'd make sure I saw the one you were buying from them actually working first.
For image editing my money-no-option choice would be....
EIZO CG221 22"
NEC2490UXI (widescreen format..might be dual DVI though)
NEC2190 UXI by TWO...just love two monitors for image editing. (I need a bigger house for this option :-D)
Apple 24" Cinema display.

I would imagine that there would be some sort of firewall built into the router. Its what we have with ours and then it runs to the wireless and the separate switch. Id also say that the uni would have a firewall in place as well, could be best to ask someone in the know on campus

the servers I administer at work are all 2003 (what is windows xp server 2003 btw? :D)
But those features are there for a reason in 2003... it's actually good when you come to parse the event log and you can find comments like "POS OS" and "Windows decide to take a dump again" or similar :) hehe...

Has anyone tried using windows xp server 2003? We have it running on a server downstairs and that is the worst (actually no, vista is worse) OS to try and do anything with. If you want to shut it down, you have to say why you are doing it. If you try and load a web page, you have to add it to the safe list, even if its windoze update you are trying to access
...
the servers I administer at work are all 2003 (what is windows xp server 2003 btw? :D)
But those features are there for a reason in 2003... it's actually good when you come to parse the event log and you can find comments like "POS OS" and "Windows decide to take a dump again" or similar :) hehe...
With the safe list, just turn off the Internet Explorer Enhanced thingymadooba ;) and it stops ;) but again it's there for a reason...
Those features are standard and OK - for the next 2 weeks I will be arm wrestling 3 AIX servers - I would rather be putting up with the foibles of Server 2003...

What is? :) The ad is talking about UAC... User Account Control... not the firewall features etc...
The UAC is similar to what i used to get from windows firewall. Asking me whether it was ok to run games and other programs.

I meant server 2003
What can i say, im tired. Been moving too much heavy stuff from the shed to the new house

Yeah i know they are there for a reason. Although i still think that server 2003 is overkill for what we use it for (but then again, so is a quad core whatever it is with RAID and gigs of ram in a dell server box). ;)

The last AS/400 I worked on was so slow I could have walked faster. It is now scheduled to be shut down in the next 18 months and the applications will be migrated to a central hub in Singapore (which is running Windoze/Oracle).
The 3 I will be kicking around the computer room are having their apps upgraded - including an Oracle upgrade on a 600Gb database. First job will be to add more hard disk - jeez - the last *nix one I worked on was HP-UX 3 years ago and it currently has a 3Tb database that is growing by around 60Gb a month...
I hate it when they give me short timeframes to upgrade critical servers...

I'm not sure what I'd get if I was buying now. Depends if it's going to be a dedicated photoshop machine too, to some extent. The new Eizo CG241W looks interesting :)
Actually, it'll be interesting to see what they do with mine. It's no longer a current model.

Thanks for that rundown, Paul.
The CG221 would certainly be a 'money-no-option' choice. 1920x1200 in a 22" panel. Nice!
The 2490 isn't dual DVI. I think that's only needed when the resolution goes above 1920x1200 . . . I think.
Question: Why is the 2190 comparably more expensive than any of the other 90 series? Nearly twice the price of the 2090  Makes the 2090 more appealing - the Spectraview 2090 is about the same price as a normal 2190.
Happy Birthday, Kinnon! Get any jewellery? :D

Not belated spam, still my birthday for the next 13 hours :D
Yep, 1 year of this place, geez, don't know how I put up with you lot for that long, kidding! :P It's been an excellent year, I've learnt so much, and spent so much.....about to spend a little more......
Because I wasn't able to go to knockrow castle last week because of my back I think I will go today, but I'm going to have to chose between my children today, my back is still bad so there is no way I'm going to be able to carry my camera bag, so I'm just thinking of putting thr 70-200 on the 5d. I hope that works out ok, I hate having to decide :S

Yes and no. My whole dilema I was on about last time is solved. I ended up ordering another ring that matches my wedding band, and they look ok with my engagement ring, and it's only going to be $200 instead for getting 2 more rings made for 2 grand.
But.....I'm going to buy a couple of pieces of jewellery, the VIP night is on the 15th and everything for us will be 50% off, so I'm going to get a couple of things I've been eyeing off. But I'm also going to get some batteries and memory, so no-one misses out and it's the best of both worlds :D

Excellent. It's so much nicer when a compromise isn't necessary :)

Just complete unsuccessful surgery on Aaron's Xbox. Some of the special functions on it are not working anymore.:( I pullled it apart to reseat any loose components but had no luck finding any. Not the day/weather to be playing with electronics. So much static electricity about it's not funny. I went to open the fridge a few minutes ago and you could hear the crack of the discharge.
I think I'll tackle the Xbox again another day when there is more moisture in the air.
