I was this close to going. My Dad ran it and my sister's boyfriend walked it so I was going to hitch a ride in with them.
This was one of very few weekend mornings I have off work and I just couldn't bring myself to get out of bed when my alarm went off at 5

Just complete unsuccessful surgery on Aaron's Xbox. Some of the special functions on it are not working anymore.:( I pullled it apart to reseat any loose components but had no luck finding any. Not the day/weather to be playing with electronics. So much static electricity about it's not funny. I went to open the fridge a few minutes ago and you could hear the crack of the discharge.

I think I'll tackle the Xbox again another day when there is more moisture in the air.

Good, so it wasnt just me and my dad getting zapped all day. Every time we got in or out of the van we would cop it. Nearly all moved in to the new place now as well. :)

I was in at work at 6:30am this morning. Totally forgot about the run until they started to discuss it on the radio as I drove in. I had thoughts about shooting the sunrise from Kangaroo point but it was a so so sunrise.

Ended up just doing work. It was soooo good, I had the whole office to myself. MP3 player blasting through the stereo speakers I have on my desk.

Quick note .... if anyone is planning on buying any outdoor furniture, I'd recommend avoiding glass-top tables. It seems they have a tendency to spontanteously turn themselves into lots of much smaller bits of glass ....

Happened at 6:30 this morning - scared the crap out of me, as the patio is just outside my bedroom window!

Google tells me that it's not a particularly rare phenomenon:

Hmmm, possibly. It was at the coldest time of a fairly chilly morning ... 5C or so I guess (was 4.6C at the airport at 6:30am, and I'm close by), but that's not really that cold (John's would certainly get a lot colder! :)).

Although it was under cover, the patio does face east, so perhaps it was cold and then got some sun on it at that time as well, I don't really know.

It's not very good! I certainly didn't know of any issue with glass-top tables. Bugger!
I thought someone had driven a car into the front of my house! Hehe. The whole neighbourhood would have heard it.

Anyone want to buy 6 outdoor chairs? :)

aw, nuts. I have that exact set.
Might be a good idea to keep your cat out from under it, if you have one :D

Greg_C

Most of the time it needs to be a sudden temperature change.

Now you need a bit glazier to stop your plates and glasses breaking in a similar way when you place them on the table.

Mine has been through a couple of -8 and -5 mornings successfully - so far.

I have an older round one, too, that has managed to survive the Canberra winter.

Mat Fitzsimmons

Yeah, I wouldn't have thought temperature would have really been a factor. Probably a manufacturing defect .... or maybe age has some factor - though it was only about 3 or 4 years old.

Certainly no load issues, there was nothing at all on it.

-shrug-

Even though it's well over 12 months old, I might give Harvey Norman (where I got it) a call tomorrow and see what they say.

See if you can get onto the manufacturer as well. There would have to be a reason why it broke and if its a manufacturing defect, then i would say they would appreciate knowing about it.

Had a big photographic day, took some of Justins photos to the markets to test the waters and get a little local feedback, sold one picture, had two people request him to do family portraits and a lady with a coffee shop offered him space to hang his pictures. The day got better when the organisers of the Pine Rivers show photography comp. rang to see if they could do some press photo's of Justin cause he'd one the Junior and Senior champion photo. here's a couple shots of the day.

Yeah Mat, we use to see that back in college when we were learning how to thermally temper glass spectacle lenses. Table tops are the same. You heat the glass plate to just below melting point then blast cool air on it. It sets up internal stresses in the glass which "harden" its surface.

If the "toughened" glass does break, it shatters into tinier, supposedly less harmful pieces. The trouble with large tabletops is, if they get ONE tiny scratch or small crack in them, it destabilises the internal forces and they inevitably break, usually quite violently. You'll probably find someone had dropped something on it at some stage.

Untempered glass is much better, but it has to be thicker. Also, if it does break, it breaks into sharp dagger like bits. Make a bit of mess of the family's legs I should think...but would give you something to talk about over dinner:D

EDIT: I just remembered, at Uni, we used to make these things called "Prince Rupert Drops". You'd heat up a rod of glass on a oxy torch flame and let the molten glass drops fall into a bucket of water. It set up tremendous internal forces in the glass and all you had to do was "twist the tail" of the glass drop (once they cooled) and they'd explode violently. Used to scare the crap out of the girls...hehehe. Hey, Pauline has a LP/Oxy torch for making glass beads...I must have a go at it again :-D

DOUBLE EDIT: Here's a video showing how the little buggers work. CLICK HERE (http://youtube.com/watch?v=Pdy2_vi0FfM). (Now kiddies....don't try this at home...at least while Mum's looking anyway.)

It doesnt take much with tempered glass the top may be tough but you get just the faintest imperfection in the edges and BOOM. I bought an entertainment unit with a glass shelf in it and as i was putting it together it just exploded. I was shell shocked for a good hour after. The glass just disintegrates into a thousand tiny pieces and you wonder what the hell happened.

hey greg, i have fallen in love with the 100-400. The first day my wrist was a bit sore, but that went. I did get a backache from shooting the cockatoos, had to shoot upwards. I used my new tripod and ballhead up there as well, what a pleasure it was to use.
I didn't take the 180, i wanted to see how i would go with only the lenses i intend to take to canada, but i had to take the 70-200 (which i wasn't going to take to canada), and got some great flower shots too. Off to get a bigger bag from PC sometime this week. I was sooo lucky with the birdlife this time, got kingfishers, cockatoos, wrens, ducks, geese, and can't think offhand what else, but enough to keep me on cloud nine.

Just trying to calibrate my monitor, and i'm not sure if I have my luminance too high.

Does this look too dark on people's monitors (which are calibrated?). It has looked dark on some monitors but they have all been uncalibrated ones.

And if so, can someone who has a calibrated monitor, adjust it to what they reckon is correct exposure so I can see how off my monitor really is? could be my eyes... :|

Hi All, very tied tonight so I can't be bothered driving back into town to got to BCG.

Back from the Ortho specialist with the result of Aaron's MRI. Slight tear to the meniscus that may or may not be repairable. All the same he does have to get another reconstruction, date yet to be advised but sometime in the next month or so. This time they will repair the ACL but it's a different type of repair to the one they do on adults.

Hey everyone? What naming conventions do you guys use for your pics?

I'm just migrating from Mac back to PC (mmmm quad core goodness) and was was thinking about changing conventions. Currently I just do IMG_XXXXX (I add an extra digit in front).

Am using lightroom for my catalog and basic modifications, but am probably looking at getting downloader pro.

I know Greg puts his camera name in the name, and has like 2007/month/year/etc... I'm happy to go through and redo my catalog if it's for the greater good :)

Any tips would be appreciated :)

I just leave them as they come off the camera.

As far as a file system goes, I drag them off the card into a folder for each days images and leave it as that. I back up everything once a week and thats it.

I go through the small jpegs that come out with the RAWs to find an image i like, then open that in LR (so much easier than importing everything), work on it in there and export to CS2. All my finished pics go into another folder once im done with them and then they are usually uploaded to the flickr account.

I just leave them as they come off the camera.

As far as a file system goes, I drag them off the card into a folder for each days images and leave it as that. I back up everything once a week and thats it.

If I've taken photos at an event, like a gig or march or Track day or something, I put them into an appropriately named folder, then in most cases rename the files as ''event name xxx" (the x's being numbers). If I've gone out for the day and taken random photos, they get put in a "day out" folder and dated and numbered appropriately. If I've gone out and taken less than 15 photos (give or take) they get put in a seasonal folder (i.e. if I'd taken some today they's go in the "Winter 2007" folder) and dated as above.

What can I say? I'm a bit podantic. ;)

I forgot to mention that any neg scans that I have are organised by the roll number, then by exposure number. It helps when trying to find the equivalent 6x4 print.

*checks folder size for photos*

Ok, ive got 46gb of straight off the camera jpegs and about 5 months worth of RAWs from the old 400D and the 20D

1.95GB of jpegs and RAWs from the pentax k100d (about 50/50)

305mb of edited, polished, resized and overall finished photos (a lot of these are 800x483 resized for the web when i had a free flickr account)

Dont think ive done too bad considering that its just from the last 9 months.

I could be way off though ... maybe just my poor taste ???? BTW, that is that thing under the king fisher on the first pic ???

C&C welcome :D

great shots there .... very sharp and well composed ....

This sunday there is something that may interest a few of you. The QLD Police union is having a march through the streets to parliament house as part of their "Pride in Policing Day"

Off the police union site:

Anyone interested in some photojournalistic action?

I have been hearing on the radio and been meaning to go. Might see you guys there perhaps if I get up early enough heheh.

Anyways, I am wondering any guys have any information on the rates etc for freelance photography in Brisbane. Any guides ? I know there is some information around here in the website but they are for overseas. I am also wondering about copyrighting contract for usage of photos. I am just preparing in case you know .....

Anyways, cannot wait for the Spring so that I could shoot those "lucky" hover flies. I am still eyeing for them. They are way too fast.

Thanks all in advance ... :D

Have a great night ...

Cheers

Yeah but it's hard when it's RAW (Well not really)... but you can browse TNs in Lightroom too, but when going through several years worth, it can be somewhat timeconsuming compared to searching for things... like "byron bay" and finding all pics which feature byron bay. I suppose file structure doesn't matter too much if the catalog system is working well. Just want to get the structure down pat so I can change camera bodies, change other bits and pieces and not have to change my structure.

Mat Fitzsimmons

I use LR and Downloader Pro. My folder structure is pretty simple:

- 2006
-- Jess & Woody's Wedding
-- Movember

- 2007
-- HIA Home Builders Expo
-- Wagga
-- Misc

etc.

I've got it set up that way because I'll often want to use the same "job code" (say "Misc" as shown above for example) on different dates, so I don't use a date code in the directory name, except at the top level - because then I'd end up with a heap of "Misc" directories within each year.

Instead I have Downloader Pro rename my files on download to YYYYMMDD_XXXX, where YYYYMMDD is the date the photo was taken and XXXX is the image number from the camera. That way I can still sort by date within the directories. I figure I'm more likely to be looking for photos by subject than date, but I still like to be able to sort by date too.

Downloader Pro asks me for a job code when it starts, but apart from that it's all completely automatic - it creates the directories, renames the files, etc. If for example there's already a 2007/Misc directory and I use "Misc" as the job code again for some photos taken this year, it just adds those photos to the Misc directory. I then just import them into LR, leaving them in their current location (where Downloader Pro has put them). If some photos have been added to a folder that's already been imported into LR, I use the "synchronise folder"option in LR and it picks up the new photos.

At the end of the day though, if you use LR to catalog and use collections and keywords, it doesn't really matter. I still like a bit of structure though :) Must be the engineer in me.

Yeah but it's hard when it's RAW (Well not really)...

lol I've never used RAW... :P I had a RAW-capable camera, but it's only now that I see the full advantage of it. I look at some of the photos I took with it and I realise there's a finite amount of processing that can be done on a jpg. :( When I get the 400D it'll be a different story, thankfully :D But I even regret using some of those shots for BCG grading - my actual photographic skill has vastly improved since buying the 3000N.

LOL all engineers think alike... ;)

I see how your structure would work, but I think I'd go insane if I ever had to browse... if I learn to use lightroom a bit better, then it wouldn't be so bad once the catalog is established.

I think what I have now is ok... might just keep it and shorten some of the directory names and take out spaces etc to be extra pedantic :)

Mat Fitzsimmons
7th of August 2007 (Tue), 09:37
Hehe, I've tried a few different structures over the last few years, but this one works best for me.
I suspect there is no perfect structure :)

I can't recommend embracing the power of LR enough though - it really has changed the way I look for and manage my pics. I pretty much never look in the actual folders themselves anymore, except through Lightroom.

Mat Fitzsimmons

I've gone back and renamed all my old stuff back to 2001 (when I went digital), and they're all in the correct folder structure now, but I'm still tagging. I'm slowly working my way backwards ... should be finished by christmas :)

Downloader Pro can reprocess files on your HDD, so that made it reasonably easy to rename them into the format I wanted and arrange the folders.

I think once I'm done tagging I'll split off everything except the last couple of years into it's own LR catalog as an archive.

Mat Fitzsimmons

I think it can do it a few ways:

- saves the settings in the catalog itself by default
- writes .xmp sidecar files with the original RAWs if you want it to for other applications (I do this)
- written directly into DNG files if you convert to DNG (I don't use DNG files, but I believe Paul does and is happy with them).

If you've only got the settings in your catalog and it hasn't come across properly ... I'm not sure what to suggest :(

I work the same way through IMatch. I never look at the actual folder the files are in. I load them to the PC import into IMatch and away I go. Like you probably do with Lightroom, I open them in CS2 directly from IMatch with one click.

Yeah they have some sweet stuff. And it's cheaper than the equivalent Yamaha gear. My high school had a Yamaha portable unit like mine and a desk mixer (Yamaha) in the "sound booth" of the hall. Both were pretty decent units and I miss using them regularly.

I'm going to see if I can track down a used UBB1002 (the UB series has been replaced with the Xenyx series now) and somewhere down the line I'm going to hook it up to a powered monitor system of some sort (I'm thinking Edirol at this point). That's if I win lotto... ;)

Funny that, I haven't mowed in months either, I have little or no grass any more in my lawn. If we get too much rain all at once most of the topsoil will wash down the drain.

Good fun entertaining kids in bad weather isn't it. Think of the new camera gear you could buy if you had a dollar for every time the kids said "I'm bored".

most definitely. :)

Kind of like me with drama. I got into the production side of things last year at school and ended up doing a fair bit of directing work. Towards the end of the year, a few things happened in my drama class and i lost nearly all of my interest in the subject. Although im still on good terms with the school and i have a few photography jobs coming up in the next few months for them.

That's a shame. :( I wasn't much into drama, but more into Instrumental Music. I worked my way up from a "trainee" sound and lighting techie in Year 9 to running the joint in Year 12. I knew the hall and its equipment like the back of my hand. I tried to pass on all my knowledge, but the people I was trying to train weren't as interested in it as I was. I've heard that they've simplified everything in order to cater for that lost knowledge base and the lack of experience. Pity... :(

Rob, what high school did you go to???

Cute puppy Reese.

Weka, our weather has been clear blue skies for ages. Send us some rain please. A bit cooler than usual, but we were due for a cool winter not having had one for a few years.
Cooler? I was wearing a summer dress yesterday in Noosa it was crazy!

Its actually a joke how dry it is here, so bad that we have scientists coming up with ideas which include filling up bags with water from up north (the size of oil tankers) and sending them down here via the north -> south current before emptying them into our dams...

The thing it makes total sense to use the tidal currents because those things follow the same path each an every time and only extremely rarely move.
That dog is also pretty cute :)

I am also ready to upgrade my 50mm to the 1.4 as I need that extra stop like toast needs vegemite.

Or when you go for a trip "are we there yet"

Somethings going on with our planet

HEY HELEN! Thought I might try out the spot in the Kings Car Park to get some shots of The Ekka fireworks. Which lens do you recommend? Also, did you park in the carpark or just get pubic transport?

Hi Paul,
Now what lens do you think I am going to recommend?
nah - your normal kit lens is fine. I would take my 12-24, 24-85 and just use those two - using the 85mm for some closer details. This year I will probably take my 70-200 as well.

I normally just drive and then you drive to the top and park. You are typically there for less than 30 mins so it costs something like $4. This year I am thinking to go in there at sunset and get some magic hour photos of side show alley and then go again for the fireworks.

Would that be the car park at the RBH?

Edit: and by days end, i too will have a 12-24 in my posession. Thanks Feng :D

Eventually. Im scoring the 12-24 as a loaner until i have the cash free to pay him for it, and he is going to offload the 17-40 as well. So soon...

Just out of interest, what's the pro for the MkI? Only filter size?
I'm going to upgrade my 17-40 sometime, but I'm really only considering the MkII, based in image quality.

Yeah pretty much that. Oh and the slightly lower price tag. Should've bought that 2nd hand one off OCAU :|

That's why I have to um and ahh over the MkI special.

Espsh being on FF... the MkII would be worth the wait I guess :|

Perhaps I should just import it from B&H. Or just stick to the 17-40 for now :|

Hi all!

Back from Leadership Camp - it was so much fun. Didn't have any time to get any photos, but one from the school camera that I absolutely love is this one of my team (ALPHA):

We all have our hands over our heads in the shape of an A cause our team's name was ALPHA.

I'd be wary of DD's clearance page, one of the other Aussies here bought from the clearance page and it was a second hand body with problems. I can't remember who it was but it was a dodgy deal that DD were doing from the looks of what was said on here.

Yeah, it's a bit of a pain, as all the lenses I use most are 77mm (17-40, 24-70, 70-200 and 400), so I have a few 77mm filters. The 16-35 mkI would have been easier in that regard.

yeah that's the thing that concerned me... which is why if a 2nd hand MkI popped up at a good price, I'd snap it up. Might check with the OCAU guy to see if he's still got it :)

Hmm. Might have to go at sunset too. Trouble is "magic hour" clashes with "happy hour";) Oh well...photo shots comes before Tequila shots:D (At least in the dictionary.)

If I drive there, I'll just take everything...and get confused...again.

Alright, so who is coming to the march on sunday? I know Nick was probably going to but how about anyone else?

For the record, me and my dad will be catching the bus to the cultural centre at south bank for 10 and walking across the william jolly bridge to the march and following it to Parliament house.

Dont know if i will have access to the net over the next few days so if you are going and you want to meet up, my mobile is 0422 522 194
