Here you go - an idea of what we saw (sorry it's so small but I had to include the lights from the rest of the city otherwise it's just too darn boring):

See the fireworks on the left there? Pretty cool, hey!

Yeah, I was trying to give an idea of what you would actually see if you were up there. It's probably a bit small to do that properly. The height is pretty much full fame at 155mm.

Nooooooo!

Does anyone have any idea why saving for web (or even exporting from LR) appears to change the saturation/colour of my photos a bit (sometimes a lot). Could it have anything to do with the limited gamut of my laptop screen?? It always looked the same on the desktop.

Mat Fitzsimmons
15th of August 2007 (Wed), 20:48
I think "save for web" changes the colour space to sRGB. Combine that with the gamut of your laptop screen and it probably explains it (assuming you're not editing in sRGB?)

Is the colour space in your LR export panel different to the editing space? (I think it exports as a default of sRGB too)

Yeah, I export to sRGB in LR. When sending it to PS it stays in ProPhoto for editing (which is probably silly seeing as my screen can't even show sRGB).

I just noticed that it's when viewed in a browser that it appears different. In the Vista photo viewer it looks as I want it to. I believe Vista is colour managed, isn't it? So it would appear to have something to do with the lack of colour management in browsers. But I thought they assumed sRGB???

Mat (or anyone for that matter), if you save my shot of the fireworks above and view it through the Vista photo gallery does it look different?

*sigh* What a good feeling....

I have that too! But mine's only going to last two days :(

wakko
15th of August 2007 (Wed), 21:26
I thought sRGB was standard if you calibrate your screen to that.

When I export however, I don't export for the web. It doesn't embed any colour profiles. I just save as, choose jpeg and choose my desired compression rate etc.

edit: just re-read my post... what drugs am I on?

I thought if you calibrate your screen to sRGB, it'll display things targetted for that correctly. And doesn't PhotoPro have a larger colour pallette? I thought you should choose one and stick to one? *shrug*.

Hey Mat,

I edit my photos in PS using one of Josheph Holmes (http://www.josephholmes.com/) colour profiles, then convert (and save as a copy) any photos destined for the web in sRGB. When I change to sRGB it doesn't seem to make much difference to the monitor image (a little bit in the soft-proofing workspace though), so does it really matter what colour-space you edit your original image in? Isn't more critical if you're going to print the image?

Quite a good day today, helping out at the IT Day at my high school.
I bumped into Andrew and then got a job offer doing demonstrations for Wacom.

Haven't been able to go out and shoot in ages. We need to have a meet sometime soon!

Also, I'm doing the 40 hour famine this weekend. And I'll be working at a fast food restaurant at the same time, so it's going to be extra hard for me.
Anyone want to sponsor me? I'm trying to raise $240 so I can also apply to become a Youth Ambassador. Even $2 helps when you add it all together.

** I'm no expert :)
Someone please correct me, as I'm probably wrong!

Because PS is a colour managed application, you shouldn't see much (if any) difference when you change colour spaces from a large colour space (Adobe 1998, ProPhoto, those Josheph Holmes ones, etc) to sRGB, because your monitor's gamut isn't significantly (any?) larger than either of them.

If you had a monitor that had a gamut much larger than sRGB, I think you'd see a difference, as your monitor would be capable of displaying colour outside sRGB, but you'd be preventing it from doing so by constraining it to sRGB.

I agree that larger colour spaces really only provide significant benefit if you're going to print the image on something that has a larger-than-sRGB gamut ... or I guess when the day comes that monitors with larger-than-sRGB gamuts become more commonplace.

I think ..... hehe :?

Hey guys - I'm heading up to Fraser Island starting on the 24th and I was wondering if any of you had some advice re: things to do on or nearby? Got a little over a week to mess around with, planning on stopping in Byron on the way up and going from there.

Was thinking of hiring a 4WD to take onto the island - I'm borrowing my parents new Rav4 but aren't too keen on taking it in all the salt water and rough tracks.. prefer to beat up somebody else's :p

Any thoughts?

First bit of advice, hire a real 4WD. The rav4 wont go too well on the sand as far as i know. Try and get a pajero, landcruiser or a patrol or at least something with high and low range 4WD. We have seen a few stuck ravs in the sand and on a couple of softer 4wd tracks up in the sunshine coast hinterland.

Hi Jim, I echo spam's comments. I was up on Teewah last in 05 and I was driving a Paj. The wife's family were in a X-Trail and though it handled the conditions well enough the people inside took more of a beating because of the narrower wheel base. I cut a trail through the sand but they could only run on one of my wheel ruts. We didn't go to Fraser but drove over to Rainbow via the inland track and back via the beach.

The lighthouse at Double Is Point is a nice walk and reasonably photographic, the view down the beach tend to be nice but ruined by the salt spray most of the time

Hey, we're stopping in Byron overnight on the 24th - I have a non-photographically-oriented mate coming along with me so I won't be spending as much time pursuing photographic opportunities as I'd like but I'm intending on doing a sunrise shot from somewhere and spend a few hours in the morning wandering around taking photos. Whereabouts are you?

Hi Jim, I echo spam's comments. I was up on Teewah last in 05 and I was driving a Paj. Thanks for the tip - we may end up spending a second night in Hervey Bay or surrounds as it'll be too late to hire a 4WD and get across to Fraser in reasonable time from when we leave Byron so maybe popping around to Rainbow Beach might be a nice afternoon thing to do.

Well you see, I don't think she'll make it. If she doesn't eat for 40 hours, I think she'll disappear in a cloud of skinniness and won't be able to collect.:D

haha I second that. :p

Wow, Paul, Matt and Rob, thank-you so much for sponsoring me!

Haha, Paul I think you might be right about me disappearing by the end of it, but I'll try my hardest. It's nothing compared to what other people go through in their day-to-day lives.

Not a problem. Don't forget the Hunt & Shoot! How are you going to be in any sort of creative form without food? ???

hey KL, Aarons with you on the hunger thing. his knee op is at 1pm today so is on 6hr fast. I'm at the hospital now just waiting.

Ugh... hospital fasting. :( Thank God all the surgery I've ever had has been in the morning. Would he be out by now? I hope it went well...

I'm happy to throw in $20 as well.

I like this idea too! If we can't all get together for a shoot this is a good substitute. Could make it a regular thing.

Aaron's come out of the surgery ok. They had to stitch a tear in the meniscus again so that means no bending until 4wks and no pressure until 6wks. ACL repair went well and our ortho had his friend in to assist (2 for the price of one;)) and his mate is the leading paediatric ortho in Brisbane according to a nurse we know. It wasn't said but I got the impression our doc might have trained with this other guy. Midnight tonight is the pain point apparently, the locals will wear off by about then. This wife is staying at the hospital over night with him. Home tomorrow after lunch if all goes well. Then a week of school to rest.

so... I went and looked - munching on a sandwich as I did...

The colour is much more vibrant. I like it even more. Perhaps one thing I would try is to move the focal point a wee bit further back to still maintain that bokeh but to bring forward a bit more of the colours of the flowers in that tree. Just a bit - I am thinking 150mm or so.

We have a winner!! Well done.

Very faithful (and fruitful) Mulberry tree in our back yard. Give it six weeks and we'll be eating these guys. Mulberry season means more washing in our house hold.... the tree is too close to the cloths line. More than one item of clothing has been ruined and I'm always trimming it back away from the line. I'n NOT going to cut it out though. Mulberry pies soon!!

Nah - no salt rubs from here.

My little Canon spy hasn't released any info this time around - last time he told me about the Mk3 and that there wouldn't be any other pro-sumer bodies announced until, possibly, August. This time he has been strangely silent.

My 5D is at over 50,000 clicks now so I'll need to look at a replacement soon - and I was going to get the Mk3 this year but have shelved that for a while. Too much travel at the moment, for work, with no photo opps so the camera isn't getting enough use - two cameras would be overkill just now.

Too date I've picked about 120 from it over the last 6 weeks and there are still another 20 or so left on the tree. They are not sweet but are super juicy and have a true citrus Mandarin flavour.

200 iso film, a miserable day and seeing some of Kelsey's Hunt & Shoot results makes me think I need some "L" glass. Or at least a dslr. :(

EDIT: What would you rather have, a blurred photo or an underexposed one?

Well they are certainly in season. We did a roaring trade in them at work today

Underexposed definitely. At least then i can up the exposure in pshop and go at it with noise ninja if i need to.

I picked 50 last Sunday. Most were given to relies or friends at work. I try to leave them on the tree for as long as possible. Haven't had any probs with wildlife eating them.

Features of the 40D looking very tasty indeed. And its much cheaper than i thought it would be (about 1700). Think ill hold off a bit longer and consider getting one instead of a 30D.

I can see a sudden flood of second hand 350D's once the 40D becomes available.

If it was about 1/2 the price I might have a dim chance. Oh wait the camera that's about 1/2 the price is a 5D....
