If it was about 1/2 the price I might have a dim chance. Oh wait the camera that's about 1/2 the price is a 5D....
Yeah, i dont see me owning one in my life time. The 40D plus the new grip wouldnt be too bad i guess. A mini 1D mkIII someone called it.

Thing that I noticed was that the grip has been redesigned. Not that it didn't need it. I know mine flexes a bit with any on my long lenses on the body. The early version used to open circuit and the camera would power down/up.
I keep wondering about these so called surprises people say canon will spring.

Hehe, good old Amazon. Canon must be happy :)
This might be interesting, too:

Well less than 1/2 the price at the moment, given a new 5D is $3,200 at Photocontinental.
Mmm, wonder how much 1DsMkII stock will be discounted to?? :)
Heh, 21MP would put a bit of stress on the old PC doing post processing!

wow, there is a lot of things on the 40D that I didn't think they would trickle down to the lower bodies so soon. I can only ponder what the 5d replacement will have. By gee I hope they surprise me on Friday with it but at this stage I don't like my luck.
I wonder if people will be selling their 5Ds and jumping to the 40D, ok not likely I know but still. Canon, are you not listening to my laments to my family each night as the odds are stacked further and further against the 5D replacement?? Hell I even did an essay on you/Nikon at uni talking about the strategies you have used to gain your market share. Please Canon. I am not going to buy a new 5D when they are a few days shy of their 2nd birthday. Come one please!

What would you rather have, a blurred photo or an underexposed one?
Underexposed definitely. At least then i can up the exposure in pshop and go at it with noise ninja if i need to.
Yeah, but... what if it was slide film? I'd rather that it be underexposed because then I can blame the 200iso film that they gave us. :p Though seriously... metering 1/20sec @ f4.5 in the Suncorp Piazza when pointed at a well-lit stage seems very wrong to me. Not that I trust the meter, anyway, so I went for 1/90sec so that I'd avoid camera shake.

I think I am going to buy a 5d. The new one won't come out till Feb next year now and I am really at the point of wanting to upgrade and I am also mighty sick of 1.6x I might be tempted by a 1dmk2n though as I can cope with 1.3x. Are there any going on OCAU? I haven't been a member long enough yet.

Nope, none there. Only a 30D and two 400Ds at the moment. Probably best getting one from PC, given how cheap they have them at the moment.

What are the chances of getting 40D before the wedding I have to shoot Sept 15th. The Highlight Tone Priority mode would be nice, as is the AF button. I could then have two bodies much the same for that wedding. I wouldn't have to borrow my old 300D back off of my mum. I'd love to do this but probably won't.

It would be nice to have a fellow 1.3x-er amongst us Brissie folk. I feel like such an outcast.
But honestly I would've thought the 5D (or 1DsIII :D) would be better suited to the sort of things you shoot.
HelenThura
20th of August 2007 (Mon), 01:26
mmm I think I might be making a trip to PCs tomorrow.
the 1DsIII is just slightly out of the price range at the moment. That would be a big jump in camera too. 350 to 1dsIII but I wouldn't be able to wait that long.
There is a 1ds on ebay for 3500, local pick up in the suburb I am staying in/near in Melb which tempts but it doesn't compare to the 5d price well enough.
I would cope fine with 1.3 but 12mm full frame!

I guess it really all depends on what you shoot and I have never been a fan of the 1.6 on mine I guess because I knew my focal lengths so well with film. 50mm will give me, 24mm is perfect for all this etc. All that changed with 1.6x
Sports is also the reason that the 1d range will stay 1.3x and the 1ds will be 1x. The sports shooters love that extra reach they get.

Careful on the expected arrival dates for these new cameras. I was told an arrival date of end of April for the III and they did get one in then. Of course the third one (mine) didn't arrive until end of June. Hopefully Canon have their supply and demand estimates worked out properly this time.

Keep the faith just a little longer Helen. A 5D replacement will be out soon enough..and you'll have to run fast to beat to me to the queue. I resent that. I still use film. I just use digital more often. Nothing can beat the quality of film, because of the differences in the way that the photos are taken. Chemical vs. digital. Chemical is always going to be perfect.

Not sure..how do I tell.
Camera and battery grip were purchased at Photocontinental on 13th JULY THIS YEAR..so it's only a few weeks old.
Comes with 2 batteries as well and I was looking for around $1300.00.
On other forums I have seen body only and 11 months old 30D's go for $1200.00..so $1300.00 is not that bad a price with a grip..considering bought locally and no warranty hassles.

I have been told that the grip I am selling might be compatible with the 40D.
Even if that is the case I might be looking at the other grip the wireless grip with various connections on it.
Im happy to split the body and the grip as long as I get the desired selling price of both combined.

he's a crack at it,
the graph represents a sine wave... duh some of you say, points a and g are exactly the same. Point e is the point repsented by pi radians or 180deg. When the numeriacial values are plugged into the eq for a, e and g you end up with the point on the curve. point b is 90deg or pi/2
I'm having trouble trying to explain myself + this stuff was 20yrs ago at uni.

What I've got so far is:
The derivative is increasing from a negative value to 0 (getting more positive) for points A and G, and so they are minima.
At point E, the derivative is decreasing from a positive value to 0 (getting more negative) so it is a maximum.
Does that sound right at all?

Does that sound right at all?
Yep, sounds good. Rate of change (derivative) at A and G is going from negative to positive as X increases, so they must be minima on the original graph. It's going from positive to negative at point E, so that must have been a maxima. The original graph would have looked like a W (or at least the part of it that the derivative graph is show for, anyway) :)
Points "b" and "f" would have been the points of inflexion of the original graph.
I think :) It's been many moons since I studied any maths :D

he's a crack at it,
the graph represents a sine wave... duh some of you say, points a and g are exactly the same. Point e is the point repsented by pi radians or 180deg. When the numeriacial values are plugged into the eq for a, e and g you end up with the point on the curve. point b is 90deg or pi/2
I'm having trouble trying to explain myself + this stuff was 20yrs ago at uni.

Thanks Greg!
What I've got so far is:
The derivative is increasing from a negative value to 0 (getting more positive) for points A and G, and so they are minima.
At point E, the derivative is decreasing from a positive value to 0 (getting more negative) so it is a maximum.
Does that sound right at all?
what I remember from uni is:
as the derivative curves where x = b and x = a is where the gradient tends toward infinity. where the maxima and minima occur, the derivative graph tends toward 0.
the central point where it crosses the x axis in the middle and changes sign is the point of inflexion and is where the parabola does a curvy like the apex (dunno the term anymore).
cant recall much more, but if you fancy a phone call to NZ, my dad can explain it. He's a HOD at the uni I go to, and would laugh at me for not remembering. His specialty is calculus too :(

Awsome! I've now finished my Maths B and Physics assignments. Now I've just got to do my English, German, Graphics and Chemistry. :D German will be fun. It's a photojournalism report type thing on fashion. Haha, yes, that's the set assignment, and yes the boys have to do it too.
