He bled to death after exclaiming how big something was (with his hands that went through the glass booth) to the person on the phone.

Well I've decided on an NEC LCD but I'm having trouble finding retailers who either stock NEC or are willing to order them in.
I've come across one online retailer who apparently has a couple in stock: DigitalYes (http://www.digitalyes.com.au/default.asp)in Victoria. Anyone have any experience with or knowledge of this mob? Always cautious when buying from an online seller for the first time (especially IT).
Aside from that, does anyone know of any decent retailers (local preferably but reputable online dealer would suffice) who might be able to get a hold of NEC monitors?

Colour accuracy and consistency mainly. I have a Dell 2405FPW as my main monitor and an Eizo CG210 as my photoshop monitor, and even when both are calibrated the same, there's a noticeable difference between them, particularly when I get something printed at a lab and compare to what I thought it should look like.
I still haven't taken my Eizo back to Kayell to get it's backlight leak fixed ...
-sigh- I really need to do that.

Well it's the 2090 I'm looking at. The Multisync version is about $1200. But I'm still tossing and turning over whether the Spectraview version would be worth the ~$1400 premium.
I did consider the new Dell 2407 HC but decided 20/21" is more than enough for me. Plus I'd prefer to have an IPS over a VA.
Why? You selling yours?

So when they were both hooked up how did you achieve calibration of both monitors simultaneously?
From what I understand one of the benefits of calibrating using a screen's own LUTs is that you're still getting the full signal from the 'neutral' LUTs in the video card. So I would assume, for ideal results, you need to leave the other one uncalibrated unless you make the adjustments via the monitor's OSD.
(Mind you, it's my uncertainty of this issue that's creating doubt about whether the Spectraview is worth the extra grand and a half)
Of course if that monster of a machine of yours has two GPUs then that's a different story.

I have both 24"s hooked up to an 8800ultra (dual DVI), and use Spyder2 Pro to calibrate both with individual colour profiles. I do adjust the settings on the monitor as well, but when done, both look the same (i.e. put a pic in the middle, and it looks the same saturation and colour wise). Mind you, both 24"s are identical and manufactured in very close vacinty (timeframe) with each other. (both build A03).

I had a dedicated Photoshop PC until recently, so they were on different PCs. I don't have the space for that luxury anymore though unfortunately. Well, I probably do, but I was finding it hard to justify, given the lack of photography I've been doing lately!
I haven't actually had the Eizo hooked up to anything since I got rid of the second PC - it's been sitting in its box waiting to go back to Kayell for some time.
Not really sure what I'll do once I start using it again. When I move down to Wagga at the end of the year I may have the space to go back to 2 PCs again :) Having a dedicated Photoshop PC was great.

That is a nice price for the 2407! If I wasn't using a laptop I'd probably jump on that.
Your 8800 must have two sets of LUTs then if you can load two separate calibrations. Luck you!

I often use Techbuy without any hassle. Don't always have stock but they are pretty quick to get the stuff in.
Yeah that's basically the monitor I'm looking at but the black version. Have you dealt with them before? It would be good to get it from somewhere close enough for me to be able to walk in there if I have any issues. Although I believe NEC do offer an on-site warranty service.

No idea to be honest... all I know is that I have to calibrate twice, have two profiles (one for left, one for right), and it comes up with 2 seperate controls in the display properties.
If anyone wants any dell monitors, let me know, and I'll see if I can wangle some through my account rep for some juicy price :) The larger format screens are cheaper now that there's a worldwide shortage of 19" Ultrasharps :)

Yeah haven't met you yet Mat! would love to! I'm VERY free for 4 weeks after September 6 so would be keen to organise some meets.... we still haven't done the cityscape by dusk yet... that'd be fun, and becoming about the right time of year too :)

I've dealt with Umart a number of times, no hassle at all.
Order online, get email to pick up, go in with your "number" pick it up. (I'm pretty sure you pay when you pick up, eftpos/cash/cc)
Don't go at lunch or late afternoon, unless you enjoy standing around for 30 minutes in line.
The huge plus in it being B&M is that you can physically return the product back to base for warranty.

Yep, moving in with the GF down in Wagga, but I'll probably be back up this way for work fairly regularly. I'll either be working for myself doing some consulting, or possibly still working for the company I'm currently with, but from down there (with regular visits back to Brisbane Office).
Doesn't reflect badly on you guys ... she can just offer me more than Brisbane can :D
... and yes! I definitely want to meet all you guys before I go. I'd be up for a meet sometime in September - though I won't be here next weekend or the weekend of the 22/23 Sept (will be in Wagga).

Stupid: A man was found dead in a phone booth. There's broken glass and blood everywhere. How did he die?
He bled to death after exclaiming how big something was (with his hands that went through the glass booth) to the person on the phone.
He was on the phone to his wife after returning from a fishing trip... when he screamed with delight that his fish was |======================| big......*SMASH*... and bled to death! :D
I knew it the first time it came up as I'd heard it before. :p
Rob - the cheapest place to buy a 5d is at PCs - Have a chat to the guys and believe me you will get a very decent price.

Nick,
THIS IS THE MODEL THAT I HAVE (http://www.pluscorp.com.au/Product.asp?CategoryID=262&WebsiteID=2&ProdID=7919)
While I highly recommend the monitor, I did have a few problems with Pluscorp with slow delivery time. I may have had problems because NEC were just in the process of bringing out a new model, but I got the runout one at a good price.
I wouldn't recommend Umart either. Over the 8 years I've been buying computer stuff, I've always had trouble with them when I had to return stuff.
I would be inclined to order from EYO (http://www.retailing.com.au/prod_140616_proddesc_NEC_LCD2190UXI-BK_21_MULTISYNC_BLACK_LCD2190UXI-BK.html) and use their dropshipping method.

Thanks, Paul. EYO are at the top of my list of possible online sellers to get it from. A few other people I know have dealt with them without issue.
So, given your experience with a calibrated Multisync, would you find it hard to justify an extra $1400 or so for the Spectraview version?
Why do you say get the 21"? I understand that the reason it costs almost double the 20" is because they use their own NEC panel which is, supposedly, of the best quality available. Is there any other advantage?
The issue isn't really the 'few more $' but what those dollars are actually buying me above the 20". I certainly don't need the extra inch but if the quality is that much better then I wouldn't hesitate by any means. Then when you get up to that price you're even closer to that of the Spectraview 2090 which makes you wonder whether you should go a little bit further.
That's the whole problem with this though - nobody has any NEC screens on display to compare.

Have a good chance of seeing them from my house but there is not much room for more than one person and a tripod on the little deck thing we have so it would probably be best being at teh school or the AFL field next door.

So, given your experience with a calibrated Multisync, would you find it hard to justify an extra $1400 or so for the Spectraview version? Absolutely. I wouldn't bother with the EIZO ColorEdge either now that I've used the NEC, but if I did a LOT of photoediting...I might get TWO NEC's. Mat on the other hand, feels the extra expense for the EIZO is worth it...might be worth talking to him a bit more...but I'd rather have two cheaper monitors instead of one expensive one any day.
Why do you say get the 21"? I understand that the reason it costs almost double the 20" is because they use their own NEC panel which is, supposedly, of the best quality available. No it doesn't. It costs $200 more than the 20" version. We're talking about different monitors I think. The standard consumer model (20WMGX2) has a faster response time (6ms) and is suitable for gaming. The UXi series has a response time of 20ms, but displays many more colours and is more accurate (and more expensive).
Is there any other advantage? What more do you want?:D

Hmmm. Maybe I should look more closely at the specs myself:oops: The 2090UXi has a response time of 8ms which still makes me think it's a "gamers" monitor. There seems to be a relationship between response time and the number of colours displayed but I might be wrong....in which case...get the 20"...but then you'll have to live with knowing that "mine's bigger than yours":D:D I was reading the RR Prices from NEC's website and they only put a dollar difference of $200, but that may be $USD.

Actually I think a better solution than either would be one Eizo and an el cheapo Dell for toolbars/etc. I can't see myself wanting to edit a photo split over two monitors.
Unfortunately, if it's hard finding an NEC to look at "in the flesh" ... it's a whole lot harder to find an Eizo and an NEC for comparison side by side.

I never had a 35mm film camera that could do this so I'm guessing here. If you are in manual mode then you would need to change the shutter speed yourself. This assumes you are not trying to alter the DoF for some reason.

And my yashica 44 lets you do that too. Just cock the shutter without winding the film on.

What about your EOS IX? Wouldn't that have something similar?

My 3000N can do it automatically through one of the functions. Press the button till the option is highlighted, select the number of exposures you want to stack and then off you go. I want to know if I have to change the settings myself to suit or whether the camera's computer will take the stacking into account when it meters the thing you're taking a photo of.
