What about your EOS IX? Wouldn't that have something similar?
Might have, I never used it though ---- or even looked for it.:o It still has a bit of film in it IIRC. I should either shoot it or process it.
It used to have a internal fault that would drain batteries, this was fixed by some form of software update according to the invoice.

rob - with my 300 in the manual it told me to underexpose a certain amount for each number of multi-exposure. I think it was -1 for a 2 shot multi, -2 for a 3 shot etc - there should be a little table in manual.

coming, coming, coming
my computer takes just a wee bit longer to load/process the 5D files than it did the 350d files, couldn't possibly be because they are double the size or anything could it.....
and I have to go to bed so I am properly rested for my first day in the real job world tomorrow. I haven't exactly had that much sleep in the last couple of days have I.
The 12mm also makes for fantastic "from the hip" street photography. I have some killer random people photos :D

What's the minimum focusing distance on the 12-24?

Another heads up for an event this week. The Brisbane International Boat Show is on this week from Wednesday to Sunday at the convention centre.
Ive got a buy one get one free thing for an adult ticket that makes the sting of the $16 entry not so bad. I was thinking of maybe going in on thursday or friday. Lighting is probably going to be absolutely horrible, but it still wouldnt be a bad thing to go to i guess.

that's a bit like me... I think it's a little bit TOO wide, but you can get the software to adjust it anyway... if it really trips you out too much :)
I think the 16/17mm will be plenty wide enough with not THAT much distortion :)

Photoshop can do it. I think it's under filter > distort > lens distortion or something (I'm at work atm).
Works pretty well.
EDIT: Not sure if old versions have it. CS2 and CS3 do.

I had a play too. I don't think the lens correction in Photoshop is designed for rectifying such exaggerated distortion. And, in my opinion, you lose a lot of the impact the image has when you 'fix' it.

Hi people.
Hope you don't mind me just jumping in, but I've recently purchased a 300D (hey, we all have to start somewhere!) and am looking forward to picking your collective brains.
First question: does anyone know of a good photography club in the north/west (I'm at Arana Hills, but anywhere as far as Indooroopilly or Aspley I guess would be OK)?
Oh, and here's my gratuitous first photo - not from my Canon as that still wasn't in the mail today, but from my trusty Sony Cybershot. It's the spillway at the Wappa Dam near Nambour from yesterday - been a while since we've seen water going over the top of any dams around here!
Cheers.

Yeah, the problem with that much keystone is that because the FoV is so much larger at the top of the image than the bottom - when you correct it you lose so much of the image from the bottom corners :(
I think our brains much also "see" the image as being a lot wider when there is keystone distortion there ... hehe, silly brains :D

There's a club at Aspley. I can't remember their exact name. Someone else here might know. A few of us are members of the Brisbane Camera Group (http://www.brisbanecameragroup.org.au). We meet at Bardon Bowls Club if you are interested. The best meeting to go to is the digital evening, which is the third Tuesday. Give us a yell if you need more details and we'll be glad to provide them. :)

Hi Ruth, nice to see water like that isn't it.
Brisbane Camera Group is based at Bardon Bowls Club.... that not too far for you? There are at least 1/2 doz of us here that are members of BCG.
Groups of us also get out together on weekends to shoot also.
Speaking of which..... I was discussing with Tina the other day the prospect of making a visit down to Currumbin Bird Sanctuary again. This time on a Sunday maybe??? so those who work Saturdays can make it.

Not interested in the M80?
I think when I find the need for a PSD I'd be more inclined to go the non-visual route - I like the look of the HyperDrive Space devices.

Usually it just spits chips about a model name in the raw that it doesn't know about. When the 30D came out there was a hack for ACR where you used a hex editor on the exe or dll or whatever and changed the 20D to 30D. It worked fine then. I didn't bother, even now I only shoot 10-20% raw.
It will be a problem for me though as ACR probably won't be updated by the 15th Sept when I'll be using it at the wedding.

oh I thought it was larger the aperture :| like smaller number... like f/4 would flare more than f/8 or something like that... no idea :D
someone who knows chime in ;)
Hmmm....who knows!
I though it was the larger the number the bigger the flare, but I could be wrong, certainly wont be the first time!

someone here might be able to help me. When I was taking photos tonight with my 5D I was taking a photo every few minutes and I have my camera set to turn itself off (or just to go into sleep mode) and when I turned it back on it wouldn't go back to the settings I had it set on previously it's like it was going to default settings.
I checked my custom functions and I didn't have it set on anything and I can't think of any other reason why it could be doing that.....?

I leave the filters off mine unless im out in conditions like you have listed. Just dont quite like the idea of an extra bit of glass in front of the good glass

Hi Asxu, welcome to the board/thread/Brisbane crazyness. With in no time those items on the wishlist will be yours. How much are you willing to pay for a 2nd hand 50mm 1.8? I am selling mine to upgrade to the 1.4.

ISO 100 f/5 @ 30sec
hmm, there goes that theory.
AFAIK the higher your f-stop - smaller your apperture causes flares in direct lights. But I'm pretty sure f/5 doesn't do it all that much.
You are quite right - but that shutter speed will aggravate the condition.

Funny thing about this is... when it was roasting, we'd hold Jess up to the oven window, and she'd start crying... see... she's born in the year of the Golden Pig, so I guess she hates seeing her own kind getting roasted :D HAHAHAHHAHA... loved the outcome though :D

the only thing is that i get flare in the shots :( (like in the 2nd one on the path on the right).
any ideas without using some kind of filter? John and Feng are correct. I remember learning this at Uni.
The "starburst" effect is caused by light diffraction around the edges of the aperture blades (8 blades = 8 rays spreading out from the lightsource).
The smaller the aperture the more the light tends to bend around the blades and the longer the starburst rays will be. Try shooting at f/18. They look really cool.
As John said, the flare (the glare halo around the lights) is caused by the excessive exposure time allowing the light reflecting off the particles in the air around the street light to register on the sensor and also (mostly) because of impurities in the lens elements in your camera. (Olympus lenses of course don't do this:-) ) To combat this, keep your ISO up a bit and your exposure time down a bit...six seconds or so if you can.

I might take a raincheck on the offer for now, I don't do much macro shooting though the ~1.5m minimum focusing distance on the 75-300 is a bit too much at times.
What I think would be interesting is if you used a tube on the 1200mm f/5.6 - that should bring the minimum focusing distance back to something a little more realistic than 14 metres. :D

LOL. That'd be funny to see. Setting up that monster to take a portrait of someone only a few meters away. People would be looking out to the horizon trying to spot what you're shooting.
And then you speak to your model, "No, can you take another couple of steps back? I've still only got the one nostril in frame!"

Yeah, that thing certainly would turn heads. :)
There was a thread on here about the 1200mm, the OP and a few others were wanting to see pictures taken with the beast but then it turned into a general 1200mm discussion thread. They were fantasizing over what sort of picture could be achieved with the 1200, a 1.4x and a 2x converter. Tell you what though, I wouldn't mind finding out myself one day. If I ever get a spare $100k I know what I'm going to try buying if I can justify it. (which I probably won't) :p

I may be interested in a better P&S for my Helen... I'd probably take the camera, batteries, remotes and the kit lens.
mmm I would guess probably round the 25-30k mark. I can check when I get home. I got it May 05ish

you can always buy my 350d, with 3 batteries, rc-1 remote and the corded remote, good copy of the kit lens and the nifty fifty.
would you split the nifty fifty and remote from the rest?

P.S. I'm typing on this keyboard I bought but the blasted thing has a half-sized backspace key. Every time I make a mistake I end up with \\\\\ on the screen after trying to delete it. :( It's going to take some getting use to.
I broke my beautiful IBM Model M Clicky Keyboard, but now I have a new one (well a new-old-stock one) and I'm loving it again. MMmmmmm....buckling spring keyboard goodness:D:D Clicky here (http://www.clickykeyboards.com/)to buy one and you'll never look back (they are a bit noisy though).

for sure - though I don't think the remotes will work with your 30d, at least the corded one won't

So you want the 350d and lens or just the lens or just the body. It is a damm good copy of the kit lens. Though the IS kit lens would be niiiice.

I know it by how many times the counter has reset. Other than that you can't tell with the low level cameras.

Body, Kitlens, remotes, batteries.
how much were you thinking of letting it go for too?
IS would be good for Helen, but she's more than capable of using the standard lens... i mean she handles the 24-70 and 5D w/ grip fine :D.. she'll probably ask me to change the * button to focus too :D HAHAH

I was thinking about it, but Mum borrowed some of my money so I've been put back a bit, and work aren't giving me shifts. I think I need a new job. :|

apparently it's not correct though. two people on OCAU had the same reading for their 20Ds

Of course she can, her name is Helen after all.
I think I told Rob, I was after 700 odd but that was before I thought about the remotes etc so say 730ish? Though I am prepared to negotiate esp if say you decided to swap me the 50mm 1.4 as part of that :)
