Lol Greg, you remind me of me when I got my first PDA. I was all excited about being able to surf the net where ever I was. But then I got my first phone bill which was about triple what it usually was, but it definatley was fun!
Yehn this is why I'm not planning on using this very often. Telsta hava a 2 month deal on where you get a heap of bandwidth very cheaply - just suckers you into relying on the net through the phone in my view. I figure if I can use it very rarely it won't cost a fortune. I was reading somewhere recently that the average bill cost on the next G network is a lot more. Not hard to figure out why when you get slugged for the data download. I'd love to be able to use the excess bandwith I have on my home cable plan on my phone.
I'm interested in what you ordered also Rhi.
Nice flowers Tina. Funnily enough I can't smell those flowers at all, I'll just have to take your word for it.:D ;)

Rhi, you'll have to show us the setup when it all arrives (and some sample pics taken with it, of course :))
What sort of rate do they charge for the data, Greg?
I'm with Vodafone and they charge $1 per five minute block.

I have the room all ready to go. It will be interesting that's for sure. As an example, I have no idea how it all has to be set up but hey, it'll look professional hahahaha.

the first two months is $8 for 100M of data/month. after that you buy data packs and $8 is good for about 2M and you have to pay about $39 to get 100M. I plan to limit myself - hey i haven't needed it until now and I really wanted the PDA side of it more than the net. weel see how this works out.

I think you're right about sucking people in, Greg. That's a substantial difference.
Tina, do you make all of your frames manually or do have some sort of gallery where you can see them before applying them to the photo. They always suit the picture right down to a tee.

Hey tina, do you do much of your photo editing on your laptop? Mind me asking what the screen size is?
I'm looking to get a laptop shortly and I would really like one with a 17 inch screen but I'm not too sure if it would be too big and cumbersome compared to one with a 15.4 screen as I would like to use it on the go as well as at home.
Does anyone else have any thoughts or experiences with the different screen sizes?

I'm in the same boat, Kinnon. Looking to upgrade my PC through a move from desktop to laptop.
I had a 12" notebook a couple of years ago and I certainly wouldn't go back to that size again. Mind you, it was definitely portable. I've settled on a 15.4" and I'll pick up a 20" monitor for photo editing at home.

Mine's a 15.4 and it suits well enough. Two guys I work with bought the 17" model. One regets it and the other ok with it. The one who doesn't like it finds it just a little big to cart around around and finding bags to fit it was a little harder.

Nice flower shots Tina.
Greg, that could be fun to be able to check out whats happening on P.O.T.N at anytime! And if you forget a place or time we plan to meet you can always check it up!
Wow Rhi looking forward to seeing this setup, at the moment I use an external flash triggered by slaves with a soft box I made (I simply cut the bottom out of the box and covered it with paper ) and a reflector I made (I stuck some white paper on one side and some alfoil on the other side). This stuff will do me fine until I have enough money for proper equipment and its great for learning.
Not sure if we are still planning that camping trip but it is a good idea!

I found out my first assesment today!
* I have to design a filing system for your digital work as a Photographer, document and draw your layout (A4) to be submitted as a part of your assessment
* Capture at least 5 images by (digital camera or scanner) these images must be your own and will be used for this assessment (don't download images from web)
* Import or transfer images in to class computer
*Your client wants 3 sets of the images:
1. High Quality Set - 7x5" (300dpi) RGB
2. Low Quality Set - 7x5" (150dpi) RGB
3. Web Quality Set - 7x5" (72dpi) RGB
* Burn your client file to cd
 that shouldn't be too hard, just filling you in with what I have been up too :D
I am not sure what size my screen is I will have to check

Cool specs Nick, that will be a nice machine.
Thanks for the inspiration Nick, I decided to give a colour pencil sketch a go. I haven't done one in ages, took about two hours to do with most of this time sketching the outline in black. The colour shading only takes about ten minutes at the very end.

I have a reasonably old laptop. I bought it for uni and it does the amount of work it needs to. Specs are as good as the $500 I paid for it ex-Govt =)
@Rhi - 300w lights - that sounds pretty sweet. I used to do theatre lighting during high school and 300w incandescants lighted the stage quite nicely.
btw I went to Kmart and got them to scan my negatives to CD. I have as such replaced the ones I posted on Wednesday with FAR better quality images =D. They're that much better than the flatbed scans that I have some more for you:

I like Dale's carriage. The seat should be higher in my opinion so that he could then theoretically replace the cussion with a proper roof section for when he is not pulling human passengers.

Some trivia - the guy that built this died suddenly while he was in his workshop one afternoon. They named it after him as a tribute.

kinnon, i don't do any post processing on my laptop, as i find it difficult with the type of light/look it gives. I do all my pp on my computer, i have a tft screen. One thing i noticed with 17in, is that it is wide screen, and i personally hate that, as i feel it gives a distored look somewhat. I havn't looked at laptops much in that size, but i sure notice it on tv's, people look a bit squashed. Probably not set correctly or something, but i see it a lot. I am thinking of setting up a second setup, where i will buy a tft monitor, and link that to my laptop.
nick, i downloaded mikes framing, which i used in this instance with the yellow flower. Mostly i use the stroke function in cs2, but sometimes i like to use mikes frames. Depends on mood and subject.
justin, i am glad it is you and not me, i am confused already!!
nice work there greg, i'm impressed!
rob, nice shots, but be careful not to post too many at one time, the mods don't like it, and may remove some images. the suggestion is there that we only paste 2 at a time, but can add a couple more if it suits the theme.
and to top it off, i got my first rejectection for an entry in peninsula comp last night, but i also got an honour for my frangipanni from toowong cemetry, so a bit thankyou to paul i think for suggesting shooting there!

I'm going to the boardwalk under the Story Bridge this arvo and then walk up to the park at Moray St and Bowen Terrace to shoot the sunset behind the city if you're interested. Never know what else I might shoot on the way.

I normally don't have the patience for this either, that's why it had been a while since the last one. I have one of these of my kids on my wall at work and everyone swears its a pencil sketch. I printed it out on watercolour stock so this adds to the effect.

Guys another idea for an outing if people are interested - 1st of April (Sunday) is the Rathdowny Heritage Fair. Rathdowny being a small country town about 2hrs south of Brisbane out through Beaudesert.
I went last year to participate in the market stalls, selling my image went well down there and wished I had time to photography some of the displays going on down there. Last year they had Calvary riding displays, an old car and tractor display and parade, people attend in period costume.
I will be attending again to do the markets but I am sure you all would find some interesting images to be captured down there.

Well, I've just got back from 20 degrees during the night to 18 in the sun during the day!! Had a great time and can't say how much I liked your city. Clean, bright and very accessible but by crikey I sweated and then some. Would take some getting used to. Another plus, the public transport. Sorry to the 340 bus driver first thing on Sunday morning who I offered $50 to but good on him for giving me a free ride. Walking along the South Bank noticed the car show was on. Foolish if I missed it. More pluses...the people, very friendly, happy and beautiful. Down side...cars, cars and more cars. The traffic was horrendous. I'm used to two cars and a tractor but nearly everyone was polite and the traffic moved, if very slowly.
Some pics? You've all seen them before but hey, what the hell...

Heheh... from one NZ turned Brisbanite to a soon to be one... here's my short account of climatisation.
I arrived in Brisbane on 1 May. Start of winter. I started work late July, and immediately walked in with shortsleeved shirts and cranked the A/C in the office on full bore cos I was soooo hot and sweating. My colleague sympathised with me, and wore a thick jacket and beanie to accomodate me. I thought he was seriously nnuts at the time for turning on the heater!!!
My first summer here, we had several 40+ days with evenings of 25+ (combined with 99% RH). Now... I had always thought Auckland was hot in summer (considering I was originally from Palmerston North where you seldom break 20). I was so thankful when winter rolled around again.
I then had to travel back to NZ for a wedding in July of the following year. I went back to PN to visit my folks, and... we had beautifully clear weather with the daily maximum of 10 (for about 2 mins of the day), and a low of -6. I froze... Wore polyprop with 3 layers, scarf, socks and turned all 3 heaters on in the house. My mum then promptly walks out in shortsleeves going... "it's so hot" and opens all the doors and windows!!!
Consequently now... almost 5 years on... I can say we've had a pretty cool summer this year, and even before winter is here, I can say I'll be the first to turn the heater on in the office now.
To summarise... you WILL get used to it.... SO fast, you'll suprise even yourself :)
Hope that encourages you to ignore the apparent heat ;)
oh and great piccies too ;)

Hi all, hows your weekend been. We had a busy one here. Ditched the kids early yesterday at my parents where they stayed for the night. Tracey and I went out for dinner for her sisters b'day. We went to Cha Cha Char at the Eagle St pier, which if you don't know it is a top class steak restaurant. We had a lovely but very very very expensive meal. Trouble was while the meal was great it was really no better than other places we've been to that are half the price.
Went to my sisters place for lunch today to help celebrate my nephew's 2nd birthday. He had a ball and I got some great shots of him enjoying the cake and lollies. Meanwhile my kids played in the pool despite the rain.

Hi all,
For those interested the QE2 will be visiting Brisbane on Sat 24/2. It is docking at the Cruise Ship Terminal. My family and I are going for a day outing to look at the ship and take in the atmosphere. Unfortunately only paying customers (those with an arm and a leg to spare) can get onboard but I was interested to see it from the shore anyway.
It berths at 10am I believe (unconfirmed at this stage) but I was thinking of heading down that way earlier to shot piccies of it passing under the Gateway bridge. I was thinking of that spot were we went bird shooting the other week.
Cheers

I think i can make the qe2. They usually come up the river about 2 hours before berthing, so i reckon if we are there by 8.00am, we will be in time, however, if you want a good advantage spot photography wise, i'd get there 7.30, and bring a thermos of coffee! I'll confirm later in the week.

Hehehe...I just realised why you think that. Remember when we took those, we had the reflector down low? Well light coming up from below = "ghost lighting" = scary. I don't think I can repaint it to alter the direction of the light. Maybe I should stick to smudge painting birds, insects and old houses :-)
EDIT: Hope it all goes smoothly FENG and that baby pops out like a melon seed. Don't forget to enroll him/her at Boys/Girls Grammar School as is as he/she is born:-)

Okay Folks,
Remember back in this post http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/showpost.php?p=2678063&postcount=314
I said I was going to organise a basic instruction on studio lighting? Well John couldn't run a two day exercise, but he has kindly offered to explain the basics at his own studio over two hours.
While he has offered to do this for free, I certainly don't think this is fair. I would be paying him about $80...that's the going rate. If you want to come, you can put in your share if you want. If you cant' afford it, don't worry; I'll be paying him anyway.
He will do this sometime in March on a Saturday night. I propose the 10th or the 24th. Suggestions will be considered.
He can take four people, so the first three that respond will be the lucky ones.
I'm also going to ask Mark Glenday, who owns a large studio for hire, if he would run a class on the use of the lighting and wireless strobes he has in the studio. That means that we could hire the studio afterwards for practice. He might also instruct in the use of lighting; not just how you hook them up. I know I have a thousand questions:-D I'll keep you informed.

Spent the day in the city (wished I had the camera!). Checking out venues for the formal and just plain old shopping. :) I'm really happy too, I found a gorgeous dress that normally costs $160 and got it for $40!
I also checked out Pulp Fiction... now I have to go back so I can buy some of the books!
BTW. Decided to have the formal at the Carlton Crest :). City Hall and the Convention centre were booked out, Hilton was too small and some other place wouldn't let us book until six months prior to the event. :( And the Sofitel was ugly!

Hi Kelsey, you've done it now. Pulp Fiction is an addictive habit. Make sure you get a Bookpoints card. Kinda like frequent flier, spend $250 (a lot I know but you might eventually) and you get a $25 voucher.

When I first started frequenting the store the new releases were $9.95, then they went to $12.95 then 18, now 19.95. Thought so. ;) Our school always referred to it as "semi", and it seemed strange that Kelsey's school would organise such a big thing like their year 12 formal so early, let alone whilst they are in year 11.
My high school didn't want anything to do with the annual Year 11 semi - each grade had to organise everything themselves.

Firstly congrats to Helen and Feng on your addition - a very exciting time! Enjoy it :-)
Secondly, my sister actually went into false labour last night - ARGH!! I had to drop what I was doing and race over to her place (about a half hour drive) and take over the all important tasks of timing her contractions. We're getting pretty used to her falsies though - this is her 3rd pregnancy and its happened with each one. I'm sure the little one will come when he's good and ready :-)
Finally - I have not long arrived at work. When I walked into my office guess what was there waiting for me? MY LIGHTING!! Woohoo! Here I was thinking that it would arrive at some stage next week but no, it's here now! Which means..... fun this weekend!
Very excited.

Did you buy strobes or "constant" lights? Do you need a long synch chord or a wireless trigger? Do the strobe lights conform to ETTL? i.e. the camera controls the duration of the flash?

Hi everyone,
Some helpful information, I hope;
For any of you interested in printing on fine art papers (other than that supplied by your printer manufacturer), Image Science provides a FULL range of beautiful papers including the fantastic Hahnemuhle range (my favourite) as well as canvas too. They also provide readymade ICC printer profiles for any paper they supply (canned profiles). You can have them map a custom ICC printer profile for your printer and have it redone for ANY paper they supply ($70).
Their website is very informative and I've found them very good to deal with.
http://www.imagescience.com.au/index.html
For anybody interested in getting into portrait photography, as I am, I can HIGHLY recommed this book...
"Posing for Portrait Photography, a head-to-toe guide" by Jeff Smith. One of the best books on the subject that I've read so far. You can get it at www.fishpond.com.au (http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/www.fishpond.com.au) for a pretty good price. I give it 4.5 stars.:D

Hi Paul - they're strobes (I at least know that haha).
I'm not sure what I "need" as such - any advice here would be appreciated. I'd probably prefer not to have too many cords, so if there is a wireless alternative then that might be a goer...
Not sure on your last question - how would I find that out?

ha, you know the 580EX II was announced today Tina. No kidding. First things to learn
1. FEC Flash Exposure Compensation. ie cranking the flash power up or down to better suit your needs.
2. High Speed sync. - all about getting faster shutter speeds when shooting with a flash.
Read up some of the stickies here. One of them will point to this site.
http://photonotes.org/articles/eos-flash/
I printed this out to A5 size and put it into a little binder. There is way to much info to understand in either the manual of that site in one sitting. I pick up the binder every now and then and read a bit again. You'd be surprised what you pick up re-reading things.
I shoot manual most of the time but let the flash work things out for the additional lighting. For some reason I just seem to like the look you get with -ve FEC ie reducing the output of the flash. I like to set Aperature and Shutter Speed and then use the flash for the additional light. Just my 2c.

I KNOW I'm not the sharpest lens in the camera bag, but are you talking about fill flash here? If you set aperture AND speed, then you must be shooting in "M" (manual) mode. In manual mode, doesn't the camera assume that the flash is then the ONLY source of light and the camera determines how much flash is required using ETTL?? I also thought that in Av mode (and Tv mode?) the 580ex functions as a fill flash only. Please tell me I'm right because it took me AGES to sort flash function out...I don't wanna have to go back and plough through it all again:(

Sorry, no blatant nasty intentions here. You can buy 18% A4 size gray cards from almost any camera shop and they cost about $20. All camera meters are geared to read correct exposure off an 18% gray surface. So when you're in your studio with the lights pouring down on the model, you just get her/him to hold the gray card at face height, walk towards them with your camera until the card fills the viewfinder, take your meter reading using "manual" setting. Thats the correct reading for your exposure at your chosen distance. It's very handy when your subject is wearing a white dress...the meter reading off that would cause it to look 18% gray...or thereabouts:D
Have a look at http://www.acecam.com/magazine/gray-card.html

Nice looking rig, Rhi.
Looking forward to seeing the fruits of this setup.
Please tell me I'm right because it took me AGES to sort flash function out...I don't wanna have to go back and plough through it all again:(
I believe that the system uses the flash as fill in Av, Tv and M shooting modes. So in M mode you would set your shutter and aperture to the ambient light for your background and ETTL/TTL metering will provide the necessary flash output to illuminate your main subject.

Yeh kinda I guess:D . I usually set my Aperature to get what DoF i want out of the shot, then the shutter speed to prevent shake with 1/(iso x 1.6) being a starting point. I then use FEC to decrease the flash power to light the scene how I want. I could probably do the same by setting the flash onto manual as well and changing the setting on it. All this means I chimp at the piccie and the hystrogram a bit to check things are going ok.
You're right about AV and TV, its just that I rarely use them. I'll use P a bit but a lot of the time I'm on M.

B#gg@r, B#gg@r, B#gg@r,
Have any of you see Jason Cole's offer over in G & N? Great chance to assist a Pro on a Glam shoot. I've would have flown down to do this if I didn't have other things on and a bit more time to get there would have been nice. I think Wardie may have jumped in to do it.

Big Congrats Feng and Helen. I can't wait to see more photos of baby Jessica!
Justin, 30000 is insane, how long have you had your camera for?
I just ordered the 580 and a sync cord a couple of hours ago off BHphoto. Cost me a touch under $600. I was kicking myself with both legs at the reception for not having got a flash before hand. The day before I left I was thinking damm, I really should have got a flash and then thought, ahh she'll be right mate ..... Yeah Right.
This is the wedding. Sigh I would like to be back there. It was gorgeous.

Cripes Justin. I have had my camera since April/May 2005 and I don't think I have taken anywhere close to that. Sheesh Kid, is that camera attached to your hand 24/7? I bet your dad is happy that you weren't shooting film on all of that!

Another one from Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary! (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?p=2765054#post2765054)
The book is called "The Photoshop CS/CS2 Wow! Book."
It has 792 pages and can be bought from Angus and Robinsons. I've only read a tiny portion so far, but I've already learnt alot. It is well set out, informative and comes with a CD full of all sorts of goodies.
