I am fine for both nights next week as there is no BCG meeting. Monday would be better as I can cross the river from uni, and it gives me a decent excuse to drag a tripod around. Monday of the week after is Comp Night. Not that I have anything entered but anyway. Tuesday is good both weeks although I don't have uni on Tuesdays so I wouldn't be leaving the house for any other reason. Not a big deal really, I don't do much at home, just sleep mostly.

Took this one anyway - their windows are all new as the completion of the cathedral happened only a few years back.

I have trouble remembering what I did 5 minutes ago and you are asking 12 months?? ;)
Last year the initial squatting party got there @ 1430 and I arrived at 1630 which was good for me. This year I'm planning on around 1500-1600 as the squatting party have been press ganged into performing again.

Ah yes Wilson Outlook that is what it is called. It depends how many of you there is and how picky you are about your location. If it is just you, I think you might be fine but I wouldn't put money on it. I know they are going to have food stalls etc there.
If I wasn't working Sat morning I would be there instead but I think because of the size it will fill up pretty quickly. You could always give it a try and if you can't get anything either come down to Cpt Burke or along 'roo Point or wherever else takes your fancy.

Nothing wrong with the kit lens. Just stop it down a bit. Use it right and you should get some decent fireworks shots too.

Lol - I think that about mine sometimes too.
The kit lens isn't crappy, it may not be a 16-35mm 2.8 II (Feng you picked one up yet???) but it is a whole lot better than some of the super super super dodgey kit lens that Canon used to put with some of the very low level SLRs such as the 1000. The Kit lens is great, I loved my kit lens. I possibly do have a very good copy but also with fireworks you are stopping the lens right down anyway so it has to be a super crappy lens to not produce a passable image.
As long as you have a tripod and hopefully a remote you are good for just about anything.
In case you haven't figured out by now Tim, I am somewhat of a Fireworks photography freak/nut. Other people might like ducks or portraits or dragonflies. I like fireworks, a lot.

I agree. I quite like mine. It has made some good shots. Sure, images come out all fisheyed sometimes when used wide open at its shortest focal length, but apart from that I have no complaints.
If you would like to see what the good ol' kit lens can do go back a few pages and you'll see my Ekka fireworks shot. :)

Yeah but the 12-24mm just doesn't quite cut it as much on the 1.3x does it????? and really everyone has a secret desire to worship the beauty of 12mm on full frame.
Which reminds me, I want to go wider!!, Spammy you will know this, have they made say a 12/14mm tilt/shift??? I guess it would probably be a russian/german thing.

I guess on the 1.3x it sort of becomes your 16-35mm though it obviously isn't f/2.8.

The widest i can find are the Canon TS-E 24mm f3.5L (http://canon.com.au/products/cameras_lenses_accessories/tse_lenses/tse24mmF35l.aspx) and the Hartblei 35mm Super Rotator (http://www.hartblei.com/lenses/lens_35mm.htm)

The 12mm on a 1.3x is 15.6mm equivalent. Certainly a fair bit wider than the 19mm equiv on the 1.6x crops :(

Rent one - there's a company down in Sydney (http://www.lensrental.com.au/small_format_lenses.htm) that delivers to Brisbane. They sound like a bunch of a**holes though... might pay to try and find something similar up here.

I'm going to an invitation run at the QSMEE president's private track on one of those weekends. I'd consider not going but he has this really picturesque property which I think could win me a couple of merits. :D I think it could be the 22nd/23rd so Sam, you might not be the only one with prior commitments. :) The other weekend is fine by me.

Here's a shot from Morgan's violin concert on Thurs. ISO3200 on the 40D under fluro lights and no flash. Ran it though Neat Image and CS2 and am happy with the result. Going to be a few cute photos of her over the next week or so, she lost a front tooth at the top and has a HUGE gap. The other one is loose also so I can't wait to get a shot when both are missing.
