I had another one that was going to have extra goodness in it but i moved my foot and tripped over the tripod :S
And my f1-11 is no where as cool as yours cause i was in the middle of taking some fireworks when it went off! ugggh!
But i did manage to get the end of the trail after the crossed over just when they turned off the burners.

Wait, those photos look exactly like where I was. Hmmm... did you happen to see a girl in a red shirt with Germany written in white on the back of it at all? Cause if you did, that was me.
Oh yeah, and ended up going out to see riverfire. Was awesome. I love F1-11s!

I only just got home but I spent the entire time down on the beach beneath the story bridge and oh my goodness.
I was about 10m from the barge in the river it was blooming fantastic.
The dump&burn was not very impressive this year. They flew so high, normally you can feel the heat on your face but this year they were way up in the sky.
Trumples, Alexson and Reese, love those photos as always.

Hmmm... the first time I used "Carjo" was on some Need For Speed forum back in the good ol' days. Wow seriously??? That's great!! These are friends of my sister's that are getting married, and they found out just last week that their photographer is missing and has been presumed dead.!! So they've asked me to do it. I'm so not ready, but they've insisted and am aware of my um, limitations lol.
Everything I've ready though says to have a backup camera so that's why I'd like to hire one and perhaps a 24-70mm lens as well. I'd love to get my hands on an 85mm one but that place doesn't seem to hire those ones out.
All the best with your wedding - I'm very nervous about mine!

Thanks for the well wishes, my wedding is my wife's best friend from school, and is a freebe. Thing is my wife will be in London on a business trip that weekend. I managed to convince my wife that I could do with a second body even though the amount of paid work I do is very small and weddings won't form a part of it. I do a little bit of paid work in Shopping Centres for special events, enough so that I can't rock up and afford to have a camera failure.
For a week or so I did have another wedding in Oct, much the same circumstances as yours, but things worked out for the couple so I'm kinda on standby. This time it's for a friends daughter. I do have another one in Feb, this time for my sister-in-law.
What sort of 85 do you want? I have a 85 F1.8 you could borrow?
Best luck with yours.

Thanks John, I shot at my wife's sisters wedding last year but there was no pressure there except for what I put on myself. Mind you that one was so controlled that the running sheet even had prompts for people to hold their breath and then breath at certain moments. ;) Should have see the looks I got when I said I'd write my own MC speech thank you very much. Was a great night though.
I'm really looking forward to the challenge.

Yeah - a running sheet is a good idea.
The last wedding I did was a bush job where the whole deal was held at a local golf club out beyond the black stump - and the participants were half drunk before the registrar arrived (all of the pictures have people holding half filled bottles of alcohol - I just gave up trying to get 'proper' pictures after the first hour). The bride had been telling me that she also had a list of all the photos she wanted - she told me for weeks that she had drawn up a list. When I asked for - she had lost it - so they got what I produced - and were delighted! Go figure.
Funny things, bush weddings.
Yours sound so much more couth and cultured.

Well both my mother-in-law and sister-in-law are organisation/control freaks so it's was scripted to the second. Of course it didn't run perfectly to the script but worked just the same. Yours sounded like everyone had a great time, before and after.:D
The wedding on the 15/9 I'm doing is a civil service in a park, and from the vibe I've picked up so far discussing things with bride it will be reasonably casual. Makes it both hard and easy when they say what ever shots you think will look good.
@shay.... only one thing to do.. give in to the urge.;)

Nick --- Congrats on the new monitor. Really love the third one also, great angle.
I played about in the back yard today and got shots of some sugarbag bees (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=371863) at about 2.2X mag. This was with the 180 + 1.4 Tele + 68mm tubes

For the most part, as long as it's calibrated, it's fine. Not sure what your screen's like but when I drag them from my laptop screen to the NEC the colour just comes so much more to life. Maybe I had a bad calibration of the laptop?
Hi Nick, I will sell Shay my 5d, if you give me the difference between the 5d and the 1dmk3.........

I ended up getting the Multisync 2090UXi (Feng hooked me up - yay Feng!) Definitely glad I didn't put up those extra hundreds for the 21". This is certainly big enough for me.
Calibrated it and found it was pretty much spot on from the factory.
As for re-processing I'm just enjoying using the screen to look at some of the photos again. This time I get to see them in all their colourful glory!

When I bought my calibrator, Pantone and ColorVision were one company. Now they are two. Datacolor bought the "ColorVision" side of things and Pantone seem to be doing their own thing with the Huey.
The Eye One ver. 2 is made by Gretag McBeth and is supposedly the best available.

That would very much make sense because for the first couple of shots on Sat, I had this big beasty which was visable at f/4 on the 70-200mm, this guy was massive! He came off with a quick blow of the blower though.

It is just wet sand. You will need to keep in mind the tide times though - that photo was taken just before low tide. If you google Brisbane river tide times, you will find one which is for that beach. As long as you don't stand in one place too long you will be fine.

When I use RAW I skip your Tiff step, and either save as photoshop or jpg depending if I think I'll need to play with it later.
Tiff should be loss less. Some people talk about changing from 12bit RAW to 8bit in PS you loose stuff so they go to 16bit in PS. Problem with this is not all of PS is set up to work in 16bit mode. Latest cr2 are now 14bit. This now ends my knowledge about this topic.:p ie I know of it but haven't played with it.

Yeah bit of a bummer there, but to me, it "seemed" like it had downloaded... but it seemed to have missed every CR2 :| So in LR, it shows... just on closer inspection, rather than CR2+JPG, it's just JPG :(
Ahhh.
I believe there is a known problem with LR's downloader missing some files when running on Vista, though I thought it was only random files.

Weird... I've had it skip files before (usually when you have the generate previews thing on) but never have I had it do what it did today. I'm beginning to think it was the import process which stuffed up, and am scoping out DLP at the moment (Greg has also given us a great run down on it too...) so hopefully this wont' happen again.

That's what I do too... and I stack it next to the original anyways when I'm done. I think I've learnt my lesson... than goodness the shots will look ok in 6x4 prints... anything larger though :| also.... work flow will now be... take card out of cam, dump to computer, and while downloading, put fresh card into camera. Check CR2s and JPGs imported fine, and can preview each one, then format card.

Hmmm. Ooops. That's true...I think. 10-22 is designed to work on an APS-c like a 16-35 does on a FF body. But does 4mm really make that much difference to get Canon quality? <Cough cough> says me remembering that I have criticized Canon's quality on many occasions.
HERE (http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/lenses/Canon-10-22mm-test.shtml) is an interesting report regarding these lenses.
Having said that: I must also reveal that I have a Sigma 150mm f/2.8 Macro lens and it is the sharpest lens in my bag.

well its the fact i have to live with a 1.6 crop, might look at a 10-22 sometime actually.
Just think of it this way: your 300mm is 460mm on your 1.6 crop....mmmmm...telephoto goodness!

what program do you guys use to load and edit RAW files? Im not sure if the process im doing is degrading the quality of my photos or not. any i do it like:
Open in CameraRAW (photoshop cs2)
change exposure, highlights, shadows etc and crop, save as TIFF
open in CS2, resize, import copyright and sharpen
save as jpeg
Iv heard the move from raw->tiff->jpeg can degrade the quality of the shots but iono.
I download the CR2 files and immediately convert them to DNG files (and delete the CR2 files).
I then open the DNG files in Adobe Camera RAW and edit as needed.
I then click the OPEN button at the bottom of ACR and it automatically opens the DNG file in Photoshop CS3 (or CS2) as a DNG file. I work on it some more in CS3 then save it as a TIFF file for archiving. I use Adobe Bridge to save and move the files around, but I use Microsoft Expression Media to catalogue, search and add metadata.
I only covert the TIFF file to a lossy JPEG if I'm posting it on the 'net or emailing it.
I also save the original DNG file as well.
