i just had a play with Downloader Pro in eval mode, and it seems to hang up my machine after it's copied the photos :( I'm in a no win situation :( Maybe i'll just stick to LR's downloader... it labels and puts where I want and auto imports... :|

BAH!

Paul: When you save your stuff... do you effectively have 2 copies of DNG (one original and one modified?)

I leave everything in CR2 with it's partner sJPG (which I may go through and delete as required) and then export using lightroom after doing basic tweaks in LR. If i stack, then I'll export the stacked version... and yes... only export if I'm going to email/publish to web.

I'm kind of similar:

1. Download the card using Downloader Pro. Goes into my directory structure of YYYY\Job Code\YYYYMMDD_0123.CR2. I only shoot RAW now, used to shoot RAW+JPG, but I don't need use the JPGs any more.

2. Import that directory into Lightroom (leaving the actual files where they are)

3. Do cropping/WB adjustment/basic editing in LR.

4. Do any further editing on photos I really like in Photoshop CS3 (right click on image in Lightroom and choose "Edit in Photoshop CS3". Also have the "Edit a copy with Lightroom Adjustments" and "Stack with Original" options picked. Lightroom then creates a copy as a .PSD, stacks it on the original and opens it in Photoshop.

5. Save the file in Photoshop after editing (this just updates the .PSD that Lightroom already created).

6. I then just batch export any photos I want to print/upload to web/email/whatever as JPGs to a higher level "Exported" directory at whatever size I want (I don't do any resizing except in the export process). I periodically clean out this directory, as I don't keep any JPG versions of anything (can just export them again from Lightroom if want them).

Lightroom has really cleaned up my filing - I now only have the RAW files and sidecar .XMPs, plus the occasional .PSD when I've done some further editing in Photoshop (stacked onto the corresponding RAW file)

I like to leave certain images in photoshop format and have IMatch index this as an edited version. This way I can find all edited files very easy and the web gallery creator can create jpg straight from the psd file. This saves me have to ever do any save for web jpgs in photoshop. The only downside is the size of the files.

Feng is DLPro clashing with something else that is looking for the USB ports? I have it freeze for a second or two if I rip out the card reader without ejecting it properly. Cmes good seconds later.

Yup, that can be handy. Lightroom lets you browse by file type, which does the same thing (only display and then export .PSD files, for example).

I've started making collections in LR too, though I have a long way to go. I'm back to about the middle of 2005 with keyword tags now though - Hehe :)

Don't think you'll ever finish adding catalogue data, at least if you are anything like me that is. I recently decided that it would be useful to have categories for the different types of flash. So now I have categories for the 580EX and MR-14. I periodically go back to images and add extra categories that I missed the first time around.

I'm eagerly awaiting IMatch V4, Mario the author had a whine recently about some of this ideas being stolen by the competition. My guess is that this is the stacking that LR uses. IMatch V3.6 doesn't naturally handle versions of the same image easily, or maybe I should say automatically. His trouble is really that because he does it all himself he can't run the same development cycles as a company like Adobe.

When you open a DNG file (or CR2 file for that matter) after editing it in ACR, it opens in Photoshop as a DNG file that you can edit. It WON'T let you save it as a DNG file however. It only gives you the option to save as TIFF, JPEG, PSD etc. You can only "save" a DNG file in Adobe Camera RAW.

Interestingly, in Adobe Bridge CS3, you can open the TIFF or JPEG files in Camera RAW now. (Great for changing exposure settings.)

That's almost exactly what I do ;) yeah was thinking of shooting RAW exclusively a while back, and the more comfortable I get with LR, the more I'd probably do it. Started off RAW and large JPG, now onto sJPG... but soon will be no JPG :)

Hey Greg. I'm not talkinga bout a couple of second freeze, I'm talking until I take the card out. Card reader is Firewire, not USB, so definitely not clashing with anything :| Damn frustrating... might try rebooting or something.

I picked up a Gorillapod SLR Zoom today. It came with a Giottos mini ball head. Not for what you think though. I want it as a support for macro stuff when I'm lying on the ground. Monopods are too big, and bean bags too small.

Not real sure if I'd trust it to the support the camera and lens all by itself. We'll see.....

(mental picture of Greg screaming noooooo, as he runs back to collect a falling camera)

Evening all! Had a good day today - tested out the water resistancy of my 5D and 24-70. Took it out in the rain today, tried to shield it but it still got a little wet and I'm pleased to report that it didn't skip a beat. :D

Just download the photos now so I'll post some up when I have a chance.

/me growls at downloader pro... or whatever it is doing it :(

This is my hardware:

1. Sandisk Extreme Firewire Reader
2. Sandisk Cards
3. Downloader Pro
4. Lightroom
5. Vista x64

This is what I do.

1. Start Downloader Pro.
2. Insert Card.
3. Wait for acknowledgement from Vista saying card inserted.
4. Hit refresh in DP.
5. Hit download button.

Once downloaded, regardless of what I do, if I close DP, explorer seizes up when trying to do anything. LR can't access any menus etc. if I pull out the card, then it everything works.

If i use the "eject" function, it still seizes up unless I pull the card out (which also disengages the card reader... doesn't show up unless there's a card).

HELP :(

Hey Mat!

In step 4, do you have the option of LR saving your edited RAW file as something other than a PSD (TIFF for example)?

Hey Mat!

In step 4, do you have the option of LR saving your edited RAW file as something other than a PSD (TIFF for example)?

it doesn't edit the raw... it creates a "duplicated stack"

Yes there's a TIFF option.

Right click, Edit in Photoshop CS3.

Then it asks what to edit.

I go: Edit a Copy with lightroom adjustments.

Down the bottom, there's Copy File Options:

File Format: PSD, TIFF
Color Space: ProPhoto RGB, Adobe RGB, sRGB
Bit Depth: 16 bits/component, 8 bits/component

Then a tick with "stack with original"

What's the benefits of TIFF over PSD...

Do you have a USB card reader. ie try to eliminate the firewire side of things.

You could try DLpro straight from the camera also as a test.

Did you do a search on the DLPro forum?

Haven't searched the forums yet no.

Just tried it in the USB one, and it doesn't freeze up... however, it DOES make it so I can't access the CF though... i.e. shows up before I start DLP, but then I download the photos, and then exited DLP and it's not there in explorer. Doesn't hang though... the firewire one doesn't have a device in Windows until you plug something in though... so that could be why it hangs... cos the card reader has no idea wtf is going on...

I'll check out the DLP forums and see what they say :|

What's the benefits of TIFF over PSD...

I'm just used to saving files with multiple layers in PSD format and completed files with just one layer in TIFF format. I use LZW (?) compression in TIFF for a slight smaller file size. Not sure about PSD, but I think they tend to be bigger files overall.

Hmmm. Ooops. That's true...I think. 10-22 is designed to work on an APS-c like a 16-35 does on a FF body. But does 4mm really make that much difference to get Canon quality? <Cough cough> says me remembering that I have criticized Canon's quality on many occasions.

HERE (http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/lenses/Canon-10-22mm-test.shtml) is an interesting report regarding these lenses.

Having said that: I must also reveal that I have a Sigma 150mm f/2.8 Macro lens and it is the sharpest lens in my bag.

The Sigma 12-24mm is nothing compared to my 70-200mm in terms of sharpness or colour but then I also think that perhaps we expect too much from a lens sometimes.

Greg,

Have just had a play with your 85mm 1.8 (couldn't help myself!). My apologies for the subject - I was out on the verandah enjoying a nicotine hit (tsk tsk) and my cruddy old sneakers is all I really had laying around lol.

Anyway - first pic is at f/1.8 and the second is at f/22. I just had the camera on the ground, which enabled the looooong shutter speed lol.

I'm liking it so far! Thankfully at the wedding on Saturday I'll have much prettier subjects :-)

Hmm, weird. I use a Firewire reader on Vista x64 too, but not the same one as yours (mine is a Lexar).

I do have some weirdness when I put a card in the reader - Vista doesn't recognise that I've put a card into it unless I unplug the cable from the reader and then plug it back in again. It then sees the card. I then start DLP and it seems to work fine - doesn't hang after downloading the files.

The device is there all the time on mine, but it doesn't recognise a card when I put it in till I do the cable reconnect thing, even if I try to look at it in explorer (which can hang explorer for a while, but not terminally - perhaps until I disconnect the reader again though - I can't remember)

I've got DLP set to use its source as drive E (my card reader). I don't have it set to auto-detect a card reader on startup. I also have it set to "automatically 'eject' the card reader media when disconnecting". Not sure if they make any difference??

Ah thanks for the tip.

I went into General and told the thing to not automatically eject and all is good :D I'll just eject it from Windows when I'm done :D That works for me... considering I have to delete the files eventually and I like to format the card :) So all is good in the land of DLP.

Thanks. Hrmm... LR does that, but it's pretty slow at it. Mat, what do you do when you import? Manually? Auto scan? Sync? Sync takes AGES :|

Nick... just a thought... you know how you said your F/W card reader (sandisk one) was bung with your LT? Did you try putting a card in it? Mine doesn't show up as a drive in Windows until I put a card in it... there's no indication it's on or anything. Same as when it was on my Mac pretty much, cept windows always used to preassign a drive letter. Doesn't with this Sandisk reader.

Mat, what do you do when you import? Manually? Auto scan? Sync? Sync takes AGES :|
I import them manually, and you can choose a higher level directory and it will import everything inside that directory, including folders, and maintain that folder structure inside LR - there's a "choose selected location" button or something similar when you're manually importing folders of photos (sorry can't recall exactly what it's called, I'm at work).

For example when I was initially importing my photos into LR I'd click on my higher level "2007\" folder for example and hit the "choose selected location" (or whatever it is) and it'd bring everything from 2007 into LR. That took a while, as I have it set to generate previews on import - so I'd go and make a cup of coffee or something while it imported them :)

I'd then end up with my 2007 folder structure inside LR as well.

I only use Sync if I know I've downloaded photos (using DLP) into a Job Code directory that already exists - for example I go down to Wagga regularly, so I have photos from many different dates in my "2007\Wagga" folder on my HDD. When I've added photos to that folder using DLP I then just Sync it in LR to add the new photos (I get DLP to rename my photos on import to include the date taken as YYYMMDD_0123.CR2 so I can tell when they were taken)

If the Job Code folder created by DLP is new, I just manually import that folder in LR.

Thanks for that Mat.

I've decided to just make it so it imports the newly created folder... i think I was going about it the looooonnng way...

Now what I do is:

- Download using DLPro.
- In LR, click the + button on folder, and select the new 'date' so to speak. this imports it into LR with the same folder structure.
- Check that everything is good, and if so I can format the card and eject it.

Add another one to this list. I format back in the camera always. What I also do is store the cards in my card wallet backwards so I see the backside of the card. I do this until I have formated the card then it is stored so I can see the Red Sandisk label. I normally don't format until I need the card. This way the card is syill a last chance backup. But... If I know I'll be going through a heap of cards I will turn up with all cards already formated just to save those few extra seconds.

Ive only got 3 cards and they are all different. So i have gotten into using them in a certain order which helps me remember which one i have filled up already so i dont accidentally lose all the files on it.

The order i use is like:

Extreme III 2gig, Ultra II 2gig and then the Extreme III 1gig.

Then i come home, download everything, check that its all there and then stick each card back in the camera and format

That's actually a good tip Greg.

Doesnt' formatting in camera change all the folder sequences etc? or do the folder numbers stay the same?

I don't care about the folders that are on the cards as long as the images are numbered in sequence.

mmm good point... :) I haven't had to do anything with folders yet, so yeah not too sure whether it makes a difference :)

I just installed RawShooter Premium again after a long time without, and boy I wish it supported other formats other than RAW... it's so much nicer to use than LR :| more responsive, more intuitive :| *sigh*

Nick... just a thought... you know how you said your F/W card reader (sandisk one) was bung with your LT? Did you try putting a card in it? Mine doesn't show up as a drive in Windows until I put a card in it... there's no indication it's on or anything. Same as when it was on my Mac pretty much, cept windows always used to preassign a drive letter. Doesn't with this Sandisk reader.
Yeah, it's the 4-pin FW port that's the problem. As Mat pointed out to me back then, it lacks the extra 2 pins that a standard port uses to provide the power to the device. So I can only use externally-powered FW devices (such as external HDDs). A bit silly I thought seeing as you usually want a laptop for it's mobility.

My last question on this topic (hopefully) is... do you guys format your cards? or do you just "delete" downloaded pics?
I'm afraid I go against what seems to be the norm here. I just have Downloader Pro delete files when it's finished downloading then plop the card straight back in the camera. Other than when I first get a card I've never formatted them.

I actually do the same - get DLP to delete everything from the card when it's finished downloading.

I started doing that when I had both a 5D and 20D, because it deletes -everything- on the card, such that you can put the card into another camera without risk of resetting the image count (and because DLP does it automatically it's more foolproof for a fool like me :))

I occasionally format my cards in the camera, but only through some vague and unsubstantiated feeling that it should be good for them :D

Righto... I'm sold :D hehehe...

edit: I think if I have DLP format the card (after checking it's imported fine) then it'd be fine to auto eject :)

I remember someone at Camera Club saying that you should never delete images from a camera memory card using the computer. You should always format the card in-camera after downloading and backing up the images.

Their reasoning was something along the lines of: deleting the images only (without a format), leaves the directory structure on the card with empty folders and a burgeoning FAT table. I can't remember the exact details, but I know that just removing the image files only, still leaves a lot of crap on the card.

I wonder what the lifespan of CF cards is and if we'll still be able to get them in the near future. I've heard strong rumours that CF cards are being phased out in favour of SD cards.

I hate SD cards. They just feel so flimsy and cheap. I like CF cards because i they are slightly larger and easier to handle

Not sure how/why it does it, but DLP deletes everything on the card - directory structure, those files the camera seems to put in the root directory, the lot. Just another reason why I like it :)

Deleting all the images in camera leaves the directory structure though. Formatting in camera of course wipes the lot.

I use these cylinrical shaped things. I just take it out, and then get a lab to get the photos off it. They just give me prints or even a cd occasionally and I just put a new one in the camera. No formatting required. ;)

(hmmm... that sounded funnier when I first thought of it...)

I have to say I think your chances are 1 in a few million well unless we lived down south where the grocery stores are open till midnight, that is if they even close at all.

Is it the fire escape that runs down the side of the Griffith QCA building at Southbank?

Or ... somewhere else.

Kelsey-Lee

I've been studying German for 7 years, 3 of those in the German immersion class (where all subjects are learnt in German).

And I went to Germany last year for 2 1/2 weeks, and shall be touring Europe late next year, if not earlier. :)

That explanation's good enough for me. I never took biology.

I only did 3 years of German. I wish I had've continued it in 11 and 12 because I did enjoy it.

The South African accent is one of my favourites.

Yeah, Ross would be a bit disappointed with the attendance of late.
Maybe they're all out taking photos instead of increasing their position on the post count board. (I'm looking at you Mrs Bell!)

You've gotta sleep sometime - you've got work tomorrow. I'm now on my weekend :)

Hey, it's dark and it's raining, I have excuses! I went out in the pouring rain yesterday with my camera, that was enough!

You've got to sleep too Nick, and I can access POTN at work...... ;)

When aaron and I got married I learnt that it's still legal to marry a cousin - you've just got to be twice removed :S

What do you mean by "removed"? ???

chur cuz... lets go get some kai and have a hangi eh? we can get the whanau over... just make sure they bring the chilly bins with beers and stuff eh :)

There is this "caravan" parked outside this house up the road from me which belongs to a hangis caterer - "Hangis to you" or something like that they're called. What is hangis, anyway?

If you insist.
