Im convinced it was just the DOF issue i had with that particular shot especially after we run those tests.

Goodo, I really had doubts that it was a physical "lens" issue.

Catch you tonight!

I have to say I don't blame you at all. I couldn't imagine doing the drive from and to Lismore. mmm my best friend's sister lives in Lismore, I wonder if you have ever run into each other.

We probably have, half the people in lismore seem to know me from all the retails jobs I've worked. I think if I had a normal name I wouldn't be as memorable though.

Cute picture of a pretty little gal ....

Anyway, just a quick notification. I am sorry that I would not make it tonight cos there is a bit much for the little grey matter to get sorted at the moment, so need a bit of focussing time. So, have fun everybody ! I would be there in spirit hehehehehe ... Don't try to snap my gentle spirit with your dSLR though ...

The weather is not looking too good for tomorrow's late storm ??? I try to make it, but again if weather is reasonable hehehe ... Well, weathermen got it wrong lots of times ... so lots of hope there !!!

Need to catch up on older posts later tonight too perhaps ...

Might see you soon OR later ??? ;)

Enjoy the beautiful Brisbane night ...

Very long story short - hit a snag with some work today which means that I'll probably be working late tomorrow to hit a deadline - if some work from some consultants is finished tomorrow ... and if it's not, I'm screwed, so I hope it is.

That would be it. I did some night shots ages ago with a small, light and cheap tripod and the wind did horrible things with it.

Best thing to do is get yourself the most solid and sturdy one you can afford. Personally, I wish id saved a little more and gotten a more expensive one.

Yeah I did have a pos tripod - which David was using tonight, they tend to be semi-ok if it is not too windy or you don't have a big lens on it but yeah it would be the tripod not been a kind tripod.

Could be mirror-slap. (Unless of course you had your mirror lock-up turned on.)

Shooting at f/20 might also be the problem. In high contrast images diffraction can soften the image a fair bit. I've had sharpest images at somewhere between f/5.6 to f/11.

Was it windy? A weak tripod will still do the job if there's no wind.

it was a very calculated move  i sat there and watched him do the same thing about 10 times over until i was sure that i could get it down in there without being run over. he was coming out just about through that dark wet patch you can see in front of the flash. still a scary moment!

on a slightly less related note, despite it being midday and outside, i had no troubles with the ST-E2 causing the flash to misfire, which was nice!

anyway, thanks for the warm welcome guys. hope to start posting more around these parts!

sorry, i'm a sucker for gear.sure thing, but it's a bit embarrassing :(

i'll post it in that thread too, but it currently stands at:

350D with kit lens (18-55), that not-so-pleasing 75-300 f/4-5.6 (it seemed so good to have 2 lenses at the start when i knew nothing!) and then a 580ex II and an ST-E2.

i really need to put some more money into glass and probably another flash too, but i've been spending so much money on my bikes lately that i haven't had the chance!

nice, first is awesome.

My city shots always come out bluured a bit, they are on a tripod and i remotly shutter them but they are never as crisp as what yours is. Here is an example.

http://ospi.smugmug.com/photos/190998578-O.jpg

Any ideas why? my tripod is a POS so maybe it slightly moved during them.

You need to see mine ... mostly tad dark and blurrish (such a word) hehehe ... am still taking pics with Canon S3 ...

Happy Birthday Helen ...

Great shots everybody :D

Anybody going early today in case I could not find the location ??? :D Is it close to the golden statue ?

FYI: Photocontinental is Evil! Evil, I tell you.

They suck you in, and act all nice and chummy, and before you know it money is being sucked out of your bank account.

All I wanted was a wet/dry cleaner, to get rid of a stubborn spot on my sensor. And what did I walk out with?

The above, plus...

A 50mm 1.8 lens, plus...

A remote shutter release, plus...

The salesman may be interested in selling his really cool car, and is giving me first dibs.

Not a good day from the wallet's perspective!

Aaron and I just went for a drive around the area. Out to Nimbin then to The Channon where we went for a drive to Protestors Falls, and my goodness, it was beautiful! we didn't have time to walk to the actual falls but just the surrounding area and creeks were just amazing. I can't wait to go back when we have more time and I have my tripod with me to get some photos.

I think I found where our next POTN meet should be!

Could probably get away with a 70-200 f4L, the 2.8 version would be better. But better yet would be the 300 f4L IS

The 300mm f2.8L IS or the 400mm f2.8L IS would be the best options over all of them though...

ok.. full story time.. pull up a seat kids!

i got home last night was about as tired as nick (who is probably still asleep judging by his condition last night.) so i was quite tired but i had to post my photos up for the wide world of POTN to see.

So i spent a good 20 mins flicking through photos and picking favorites .etc :)
I got to bed at some time and i dont remember when and i got up at 5am this morning (my usual up and go time) and felt so much worse than other days hehe. so i thought im gonna come straight home and sleep (nick tactics :D).

so i didnt think twice and brought helens tripod to work but not my camera (or gregs 10-22 :().. and now i feel in the mood to laugh at sam and his craaaazy antics. not to mention the photos hehehe..

so i got this "what have i done" feeling when i started feeling like i should have brought my camera into work lol.

anyways thats my story and im sticking to it lol!

Well, I made it through today's shift without falling sleep but there ain't a chance in hell I'd head into the city this evening. The drive home last night was bad enough. I was definitely too tired to be driving and if I went out tonight it would just be plain stupid.

thanks Nick, actually I cheated and used a tripod.:o I did snap off a couple handheld but this one turned out better, a lot because of the the light he was in. The natural light was simply just no flash on my part.

I picked the domain name cause it was free and you could relate it to photography - I guess my hands are not all that steadier than anyone else.:o but it's certainly a learned skill. It takes practice to handhold a long lens and I've noticed I get more shakey towards the end of the day out shooting birds.

I'm loving the high ISO on the 40D. No direct comparison to go by but have the feeling they are a little better.

Another from last night. I guess they all come back with this view. Nigel and I walked to the bottom of the cliffs because wanted to try this shot again and wouldn't be there tonight.
