Funny you should say that as Em's mum was standing just behind us. When we changed positions just after this shot Em was on some stairs above her boyfriend leaning down. Her mum made a comment then but it didn't matter as Em's long hair had fallen foward to cover things. Em is a natural in front of the camera - very relaxed and seems to fall into good poses almost without being asked. Thanks for the comments.

Hey Paul. Just thought of an idea for next time. We shoot a bit of wall as a donner wall to use in post processing. Hindsight - oh well. I shot one as as a lighting test but deleted it in the camera.

What's a "donner wall"?

Take a shot of the wall where I was shooting and use this to clean up the backgrounds. Cut and paste bits into to replace the background.

hi all,

Quick question about customs. iv bought my lens from American and its being held in Sydney awaiting payment from me. Now can i phone them now to pay it or must i wait for them to contact me? And if i can contact them now, is this: http://www.customs.gov.au/site/page.cfm?u=4491 the number i must do it with.

Nice shots, fellas. I particularly like the last one of Paul's and the first post of Emily by Greg.

Reese, who was it shipped through? UPS? Fed Ex?

I see you must have decided on the 300 over the 400. Is that what we're eager to get our hands on?

Ospi
25th of February 2007 (Sun), 01:52
yes, very very eager, which is why this wait is killing me. Shipped by UPS. I could write an essay on whats gone wrong with this purchase from day one. Its been one of "those", nothing but problems.

Nick C.
25th of February 2007 (Sun), 02:03
Sorry to hear that, Reece. I can't say I've ever had any trouble with ordering from the US (B&H/Adorama I assume).

You should only have to deal with UPS. UPS will send you an email/letter asking for the GST and other import charges and they handle Customs for you.
Of course, the impetuous ones (including myself) can ring UPS on 131 877 to try and minimise all that waiting :).
Good luck!

I was looking at your gallery - some great shots in there (especially the wildlife). I noticed you've shot over at the Queensland Raceway. I've been thinking of heading over there on one of their track/race days to get some pics. Can anyone just show up with a camera and take photos or is it somewhat restricted?

Ospi
25th of February 2007 (Sun), 02:20
You can show up and do as you please. As far as i know with track days and events like the historics etc you can even drive your car into the complex and park it in the spectator areas.

Im going to try to get there soon to try out the new lens.

justin, we didn't start shooting till after 8.00am. I re-looked at my photos this morning, and have to admit, nothing is exciting me. I thought i had a great hibiscus shot, but something about it is not grabbing me. It's a good shot, but i just don't know what it is. Maybe i am starting to be too critical of my work, i don't know. Or i am just tired!

paul, it doesn't metter if the threasd is long, we all click "last" anyway. and we are all used to the title now too.

The problem arises when you want to hunt something down like an event we are organising or a date and time for the event. Perhaps we should start an extra thread titled POTN Brisbane Group Events. When we decide on something, just post what it is, the date, the time, the location in there. Sound viable?

Nice shots, Andrew. I've been waiting for a clear morning to get a nice sunrise shot from Redcliffe but the only time I see a cloudless sky at that time of the morning is when I'm on my way to work :(. On my days off it always seems to be cloudy/overcast (or I just sleep in )

I like the idea of updating the initial post in this thread. It's simple and keeps everything together. Seeing as we are all already in this thread it should be easy to check the first post or ask each other for details of the next outing.
As for your 'Group Events' thread, Paul, don't forget Justin did start this BRISBANE POTN ACTIVITIES (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=225017) thread some time ago. It seems to have fizzled out somewhat though.

On a side note... i've finally gone to shooting RAW exclusively. Eversince I went from PC to MAC, I've been looking for a good library/raw editor after coming from Raw Shooter on PC.

So I decided to try a whole heap of Mac apps. Standard Bridge/PS combo, Aperture, Capture One, and finally Lightroom 1.0. I must say, Lightroom 1.0 has many similarities with Raw Shooter except with a much better library type system which catalogues you photos for you, can sort by lens, camera type etc etc which is all extracted from the EXIF. I have a few gripes about Lightroom, but for what I do (which is simple adjustments before exporting to CS2), it's great. Exports well... one or multiple as 16bit TIFFs just like Raw Shooter.

So.... just my little splurge for the day. 100% RAW for me from now on ;) yay.

Feng.

PS: Baby's doing well :) hehehe...

i shoot raw and jpeg, because sometimes, my shots only need a little tweeking, and i find the jpeg quicker to do it. I can also download onto any computer if needed, and see what my pictures are like (mainly with family). Easy for me to delete what i don't want, and to burn a cd from that if needed.

can we have some more info on sunday please? God, i am so dead from this w/e, and i have a b'day party next sat night (and it will be a late one!), i really need more hours in my day to get some sleep!

Hmmm.. that's a good point... Didn't think of that one. Perhaps I should leave it in dual mode for a bit longer and ponder over this one. :)

With regard to anything off this computer... no trouble through batch jobs etc... but yeah.. I see your point there.

I shot RAW images for all my photos except family type images that are shot on jpeg so that the family can view and use them easier.

I would be interested in a trip to natural arch this weekend, might pay to share cars a bit to make things easier.

And I'm not familiar with the layout of the place, so someone else will have to give directions to a meeting place.

Well in that case, I'd like to be there shortly after sunrise, but that's not real practical.

So how about we meet in the car park at 9.30 or sooner? It's a short walk to the arch. My best guess would be about a two hour drive from Brisbane.

Here's a link to a map of how to get there. It's a weekend so it's probably going to be crowded. Actually the whole Numinbah Valley is pretty photogenic. Plenty of photo stops on the way. :-D

When you say 9:30 in the carpark you're talking qld time, and it's this sunday? I'm thinking of leaving while it's still dark and driving the back way through murwillumbah and up that way and just stopping along the way if there's a nice capture.

Hey guys I've been mulling over an idea for a while. It seems we're a very busy crowd and have lots of proposed events coming up over the next month or two. These always seem to get lost some amongst our long threads.

My idea is this. Why not share the info in a Google Calendar. I've set up the up coming events into a Google Calendar and just PM me if you want the address. It'll display in a normal web page. The neat thing about this is if the location info is filled out the Google maps link will work also. I'm happy to keep this current. Also I can share it properly with any of you that have a Google gmail email address, then others could add stuff also.

What do you think, Is this to techo and complicated?

Hi Kinnon,

Yes, Natural Bridge=Natural Arch.

If you're coming from Murwillumbah/Tweed way, just go through the roundabout and across the Tweed into Murwillumbah town centre. Just keep going straight ahead down Wollumbin Street and turn right into Brisbane Street and then left into Murwillumbah Street and then right again into Queensland Road. Just follow this all the way until you cross over Rouse River and the road veers left and changes its name to Numinbah Road. And you're on your way!!

That's a spectacular drive. One of the best in Queensland. The township of Chillingham is on the way and well worth having a little look around. Also Crystal Creek has a few good spots as well as the town of Numinbah itself. If you go early in the morning, keep your eye out on the left side for Egg Rock (I think that's what it's called). Just keep going until you see the sign for Natural Arch (or Bridge).

Missed a photo op today. I went out to an Energex Depot at Richlands today. Sitting on a front counter was a very small bat (flying kind not the cricket type). It was probably only 50mm (2") long. I've never seen one of these before and it would have been nice to get a shot of it. The noise in the office scared it and it disappeared to elsewhere in the office. How it got in the first place nobody knows. They were going to call the wildlife people to come and get it.

Got this one from Adorama since we were having CC authentication issues with B&H for some reason. Iv had so much trouble with this purchase its not funny, just hope it all ends tomorrow.

FYI Reese. If you order something from B&H that is over $1500 USD in value, I don't think they will accept CC payment. You have to do a telegraphic transfer. (At least that's what happened to me last time.)

Ospi

is that $1500 USD? It came to about 1400 USD so i didn't think it was that, the error was kinda weird and i dont think it was related.

Going to try and sort that out with them over the next week or so anyway.

I have tried several times & the last was just weeks ago. they want you to fax a copy (both sides) of your credit card. Andorama are exactly the same. They didnt put a $ figure on the request.

Im pretty ok with using my CC online but no way on gods green earth am i going to fax a copy of my my CC number plus my 3 digit security number on the back along with a copy of my signature to an over seas fax number.

Yeah i was very nervous about that as well, but after phoning then and talking to them for awhile i felt it was safe enough to send to them. However Adorama wanted a copy of a bank statement as well to which i replied nicely to bugger off.

No, that's not what happened to me. I had to do that (fax CC copies) to become a customer for the first time and I bought many things after that without having to fax the credit card again (verification department). My problem occurred when I ordered ONE item (a lens) that cost more than $1,500 US. There 'was' a store limit of $1500 for credit card orders from Australia before the card transaction was rejected. I rang the store to find out why and he said something about 'store policy' and I had to wire the money to their account. It was no big deal really.

Adorama don't have this store limit thingy.

I have to say, that is why I buy here. Too much hassle, and if you shop around, the prices are pretty close.

well, i had a great yesterday, my work was postponed, so I headed off to mt C. gardens, to get some shooting in whilst tripping around brissie. Weather was great, nice and cloudy (and rain at one stage, though that was not so good!)
a couple here, but not my comp ones, they can wait till after. I have a couple of brilliant lillies, can't wait for the next comp!

Ahh well the lens arrived today so finally i can put the issues behind me. Ill certainly be thinking rather hard at where ill buy from now on though, i made the wrong decision this time but i guess you can put it down as a "life lesson".

Bottom line is this lens is gob smacking. Heres some shots from it this arvo, no sharpening done at all and the last was at 1/125 handheld :S.

Will anyone have a spare seat in a car? As I am more than happy to car pool down there as it would just be me in my car (think of the planet, the fuel etc). I live at Kedron but am more than happy to meet someone somewhere and you will also get petrol money out of it as well.

Hi everyone,

Well I've been MIA for a little bit, things have been hectic this week at work and uni started back on Monday (grrrr). I finally got a friend of mine over yesterday for a shoot with my new lights and it was great to take photos of someone else for a change rather than myself haha.

Here's the link to some finished shots http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?p=2813889#post2813889

I know that a lot of people don't like the high key stuff but I love it. My friend was looking at these last night and she said to me that she never though she could look so good! There are varying amounts of pp done on them, some have 100% airbrushing, others just 50% etc and I think I altered her eye colour in each to reflect what she was wearing at the time.

Anyway - let me know what you think. Still a long way to go but at least I'm happy to go forward instead of being frustrated.

Cheers :-)

Hi Guys,

Here's another from yesterday. I really tried to push the envelope here with the colours:D , and it may be over done.:?: Same Image was process twice in DDP with Autumn Hues Picture Style and then these merged with layer masks in CS2. I ended up with a 200+ Meg file. I don't normally use picture styles and usually just tweak thing in CS2.

Honest opinions please.

PS you should have seen the Tungsten version. Very Purple!

Yes about 3" would be right. Greg, Helen and I were working along the bank of the stream just after the water comes out of the cave. I was looking at some fungus there and moved a small twig and it was enough to make this fellow give away his position.

I would never have found him otherwise and you couldn't take your eye of him for a moment. Greg also got some shots of the same Frog.

Of course during the visit to Natural Arch there was another strange animal type in evidence - both male and female specimens were seen of the humble "Canonus phothogus - POTN family".

These creatures tend to travel in flocks or packs (commonly called Lowepro's).

Often seen with dirty knees these animals can be heard chattering about shutterspeeds, f-stops and gadgets.

While normally a peaceful animal, they can be prone to fits of grumbling about the ruined shot thanks to the inconsiderate tourist.

Spouses should make an effort to keep their photo inclined loved ones away from these animal as it can lead to the bank balance being raided for the latest 100-10000mm lens (L-series of course).

Yeah. I think I agree that the end result looks better if you simply mask all the crap out of the 7 or 8 exposures and fuse all the "good" stuff you're left with using layers.
