i dislike people who post photos saying they are 'bad' then you offer to help via post processing, but they never reply. i especially despise people who don't have IMAGE EDITING OK on, they ask 'what should i do?' and you can't help out. gah!

if they dont' have image editing ok, then don't touch it, don't even bother to ask.
i wouldn't waste my time Tim... if someone has OK on, then just do it, and say "here's my take on it". if they don't like it, they shouldn't have image editing ok. that's the whole point of that setting.

I'll be taking a somewhat gap year next year. It'll be my final year of uni with only two subjects per semester. woohoo part time uni :D. Although 6 years to complete my two degrees was a bit too long.

I'm not really sure yet. I might have a break then do a tafe course in IT/Photography or a uni course in IT or even just look around for a few IT jobs...who knows. I'll see how it all plays out later. (IIRC I think I already have Cert 1-2 in IT + Work experience for the last 2 years working around computers. So applying shouldn't be that hard :D)

tell me you remember grade 1;):p my gap year was the first year of my apprenticeship = no gap year. seems to be something that has become more popular over the last ten years or so.
i tried to have a gap year between one uni course and the next... didn't work I too into surfing during the year off and never started the second course.

Is it wrong to say now that my mother dropped my 70-200 f4L onto rocks whilst we were hiking the other week- it dropped, it rolled and I cried something chronic. Apart from the little ding on the end which makes it a bit harder to put the hood on, I swear the colours and sharpness have improved.
i cried.. aha.. but seriously, if the colour and sharpness improved, canon should be drop testing all lenses!

thanks tina! unfortunately i'm limited by only having one flash at the moment, and no other really suitable lights at easy access. no remote shutter release, nor tripod at the moment either unfortunately, so i was making do with what i have haha. thanks a lot for your input, your example is certainly far better than anything i managed!
oh and yes, i'm new.. well, to the Brisbane group anyway - after a year on POTN, i thought i should probably introduce myself :p
leitch, my light tent was home built, from a cardboard box, with a large sheet of cardboard from the newsagent as backgound. I used 3 lights, all desklamps, no flash. If no release, use timer, and if no tripod, find a coffee table, stack of books, whatever. innovation is the key!

One of those stupid uni questions that you'll very rarely ever need to know the answer for. Mind you, the 240V at your power points is a RMS value. So the peak value is 1.414x240V or about 340V.

It slips through every now and then with woolies, but we usually have apology notices in the papers and in store the morning of the new sale if something is wrong.
You wouldnt believe the number of people that go shopping late on a sunday afternoon (last day of a sale) and then get stroppy at me because we dont have any stock left of something. Ive gotten to the point of pointing out the note in the catalogue that says "specials on sale until whatever, unless sold out beforehand".

Unfortunately you can't judge the game by the demo since the demo is about 1/100000th of the full version, but if you do enjoy the demo you wont be disappointed byt the full version.
To get an idea of what the game has youtube Rfactor and watch some vids, heres a gooden:

theres a new PCC out now, 07, has the aussie series as well and is quite brilliant. Got a league starting with them soon which should be a blast. Heres a quick pic:
Ha, I really thought that was an actual photo there for a second. I was wondering how on earth you got up so high

Sorry to hear the trouble you've had, Nigel.
It does look like a printing error. It's a bit hard to read in the PDF but if you look at the model number that is noted there (in small capital lettering) it seems to refer to the 512MB ASUS Geforce 8500GT. From a quick look that would correspond to the price listed. So I doubt they'd be found in breach of any sections of the FTA or TPA as it wouldn't be hard to evidence a bonafide error on their part.
In saying that, if they hadn't already noted the error and issued an apology (through the newspaper/similar medium or on display in store) I do believe that it would be the decent thing to do if they gave it to you at that price. However, I don't think that they have an obligation to do so.
In any case, I hope it works out well for you.

great, leave my front door to grab the paper and instead of a leasurely early morning stroll i get attacked by two bloody plovers. Same couple as last year have nested in our yard again, they fail as parents though, last year we watched them walk their chicks to death, i dont hold much hope this year.

Well the dumbasses decided to leave our yard for "greener pastures", however all they did was cross a flowing stream, one disappeared, they then went across the road and to a property with crazy dogs and small kids, after ralising this was a bad move they decided to come back, by the time they were in our yard again it was mum and dad, they managed to lose 4 chicks along the way.
Gonna have to give them a stern talking to.

Well, I can't say I notice too much of a speed increase but it's nice to be up to date.
Do any of you LR users find your pictures appear more saturated in LR than anywhere else? Looking at a photo in PS gives me the same level of colour as when I export a JPEG from LR or 'Save for Web' from PS (so I'm assuming they're all showing the correct version). But if I look at the same photo in LR it always seems more saturated (and considerably so).
This colour management stuff really puzzles me ???

I've resolved my problem though. Something was playing silly buggers with the calibration of the two monitors.

Just installed from 1.1. 1.1 was a huge jump from 1.0 in terms of performance... we'll see how 1.2 goes.

Mine all looks the same... browser, LR, and PS. I calibrate my monitor to sRGB's sorta standard and it just seems to look right in browser too.. just compared the same 3 images... not oversaturated or anything... same on both monitors too... mind you, I just calibrated like 20 mins ago ;) Makes a big diff... i was noticing that browser was a bit off... so i calibrated, and it changed quite a bit the last month.

i tend to notice when the monitors drift more now that i have two screens :) everything's so purdy once calibrated though :)

Dont actually know. I did notice that i was more pleased with the images from the 20D over my old 400D but that might have something to do with me shooting RAW on the 20D instead of JPEG on the 400.
Dont add too much sharpening either. Usually between 70 and 100% at a radius of 0.3 pixels. Added at the very end after resizing

I'm just kidding :p TV can be quite funny that way... I think it might have been a Bond movie (or XXX.. one of those) sometime where they showed the focal length on the left of the screen when it was in "binocular-view" and it went from something like 10mm to 600mm and the f/stop display was cycling through the whole range and back again :p

it's fun to know more about something than the general public.
i keep fish and spot aquariums in the backgrounds of movies etc.
i'll be sitting there and (seemingly randomly) go "their not even marine fish in that reef tank"
Now I also play "which lens is that?", when watching news and a bunch of photogs are scrimming someone or other, I yell out the lenses I can see.
People don't think I'm crazy AT ALL.
actually come to think of it, i do this with other things too, i was flicking through stargate (or some other form of sci-fi geekery) and saw one of the guns they were using, turned to my partner and said
"pfffft, that's just a p90 with some cut out plastic stuck to it to make it LOOK futuristic, it isn't ACTUALLY from the future. Idiots."
for the last one I blame counter strike.

Fun.. geeky.. fun.. geeky.. hehe :p I remember being amused when I watched the Fast and the Furious and Vin Diesel was going on about "double-clutching" on the drag strip.. wtf, someone was obviously throwing in whatever car-related terms they could think of at that point :p
I will also admit to surreptitiously checking out any lens/body combos that I see pretty much anywhere.. I'm getting pretty good at guessing which body just by the shutter sound these days. Maybe I need to get out more. Then again, I am out when I'm doing this.. hmm...

When this first came out I landed on Australian drifting site, to read a review of the movie.
Let's just say they were very unimpressed by the technical details, including the obvious, that drifting isn't in fact the fastest way to get around.
One of the longest running threads at the time was, wether the engine they put in to the old car at the end (charger?) was a s17 or s15 and how stupid that engine choice was.
(please note the "s17" and "s15" are just made up by me , although I'm pretty sure the words 's17', 'nissan silvia', and 'fully sick' go together.
