Well I sorted through my photos today and I only have one photo that I am happy with from round the 'arch/bridge whatever you want to call it.
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/169/412172214_162ff5798d.jpg
Since we had all left the area by 12ish, I decided to head up to the Beechmont Launch to check out the views and see if there was any para-gliding/hang-gliding activity and there was :) Though I am yet to figure out what group to post them in, landscape yet sport yet transport yet people. Where is the, I went out on the weekend and here are my assorted subjects forum?

That's a cool shot Helen. Well done to get the greens and the blues both well exposed. Can't help with the posting directions sorry. My guess would be people or sport depending upon the main theme.

Okay....is the "drought" shot this weekend? If so, where and when? Just a suggestion, but a sunset time shot might be better? Lake Wivenhoe "might" be promising, but it's a long drive.

we had anthony corneleous(?) giving us a talk on storm chasing last week. A few night's ago, a storm was brewing, but after finaly finding my tripod (why do i never put things back where they belong!?) most of the lightning had gone, but i managed to get this. No award wining shot, but it is the first time i have ever captured lightning, so i feel rather chuffed that it worked! Bring on the storms!!

Wow, that image is great - you can see that it's manually blended - automated HDR tends to look super fake and halo everywhere that transitions from light to dark.
Just a shameless plug here - I have my sigma 30 f1.4 EX lens for same in MINT condition, as it comes from the shops. Sharper than my 70-200 f4L and focuses perfectly etc etc. Want to buy more zuiko lenses for my film olympus so have to sell it.
I'm in Brisbane, willing to drop it off if anyone wants it. Bloody fantastic lens!

I'm at the mercy of the weather again as I'm on standby. Also, the last arvo will suit me better as there is other stuff on in the morning.
Did a bit of retail therapy this morning. I bought 2 external Hard Drives. One is a 2.5" (120G) notebook drive and there other is a regular 3.5" drive (320G). The small one is to supplement the storage on my notebook and the other is for off site backups.
Next step is at NAS attached to the router or maybe a home server.

Ok building on the approval of the last one here is another. I used the last image as a base and flatten it to one layer. Duplicated it to have a brand new file - didn't want to stuff up the other one.
Applied a Midnight Sepia action (from action central). Duplicated the layer twice. Changed the middle one to B & W with a Sepia tint. I then changed the top layer to Soft Light blend at 60% opacity to blend a little tint back in.
I was going for a 20's and 30's look with - inspired by the pearls.

Paul, the midnight sepia one looks the better of the two. It seems a little bright on the side the main light was on. My shots suffered from this also. I think we needed less power than 1/4, or some additional diffusers.
I like this effect one portraits,it gives a nice dreamy effect. Doesn't suit all shots though. Works better on shots that can go darker - does that make any sense?

Hello all,
I'm new here (joined last year but never posted until recently) so I thought I'd introduce myself - justin carpenter actually encouraged me to do so. Justin's mum is a work colleague of mine.
No better way to introduce oneself on a photography forum than by posting an image. Here's a recent portrait I did as part of a commission for some head shots I had from the bank I work for (photography is incidental to my normal work...).
http://www.lowephoto.com.au/photos/135048222-L.jpg
Lighting provided by a 580EX through an umbrella with a circular white reflector on the opposite side. Background was a collapsible white lit by another 580EX so it appears white and not grey. Flash units set to manual mode and wirelessly triggered by an ST-E2 transmitter.
Camera used was an EOS 1D MkII N.
It appears some of you have at least studio monobloc flash units. The next time any one has a shooting session using studio flash I'd love to attend as I'd like to experience using such lighting. Please let me know!
cheers,
Merv

Hi Merv, welcome to POTN and the Brissie thread. Nice work there on the portrait. Rhi is the only one of the regulars here that has a lighting setup. A few of us did a lighting workshop last night. Sounds like you have a nice setup there with the 580s and the ST-E2.
I'd like a few lights but convincing the other half is the hard part.:D I think the ducted air in the house will come first.

Welcome Merv. I think most members here would say that they only work to fuel their photography obsession:-D
Hehe...we don't have much experience in studio shooting (although I can't speak for everybody in the Brisbane POTN group). The images you see are from our very first go at studio photography at an instructional night I organised.
I am going to organise the hire of a studio at Boondall soon for a group of up to 4 people at a time. Costs are high, but it is a fully equipped studio (I'm going to check it out this week). I expect it will be about $87.50 each person for a 4 hour 1/2 day session. I should be able to scrounge up a model or two who'll work cheap/free if we give them copies of the images or a few prints.
We'd certainly welcome anybody who has the least bit of knowlege about techniques.
Oh well. Now that I announced it, I'm hoping those interested will say so, and also the preferred day/time they'd like.:D
Kelsey-Lee
11th of March 2007 (Sun), 03:08
I'm interested, and I have a few friends who would be interested in modelling.
Would that be $87.50 each for me and Dad, or together, seeing as we only have one "real" camera to share between us. I keep telling him he needs to go buy his own. :p

Well to be fair, I reckon it should be $87.50 per camera. Also, rather than having all four cameras firing at once we should just have one of us shooting while the others help with reflectors and lights i.e. take turns. I think only one of the synch chords works at any one time. (Mark Glenday says he has a wireless trigger).
Can you nominate a day and time you'd prefer?

Competitive it is. But if you have a passion for something you'll find ways to make things happen. Just got to go for it - that's what I've decided.
If you think you're not good enough then you're already beaten. You need to learn the skills (technical and business) so you're better than the other guy. That's my plan for the next six months before I leave my secure job in the bank.
Enough of my self-reassurance...back to surfing the net for lighting techniques.

Feng, you won't go wrong with that kit I think.
I've done a lot of research and from what I gather Bowens is right up there with the best flash units. Well built and featured, and a reasonable price. Plenty of accessories too.
If you're after more quality (with an increase in price though) Elinchrom Style 400 FX/BX would be the unit I'd spring for. They come in a kit as well. Elinchrom are arguably the best you can get in studio flash.

Hopefully that will all change soon though - my friend's sister was impressed with the pics I took and has asked for a shoot for herself, which is great. So I'll line that up and get back into it.
Just wanted to touch base anyway :-)

Hi Merv. For some reason your dragon just doesn't show up in Firefox for me  Weird.
You've got some other nice photos on your website too. Look forward to meeting you.
Andrew, I'm glad the eggs turned out to be housing something a little more tolerable than Reece's find :)
Sorry to hear that, Rhi.
I'll be looking forward to seeing some more of those wonderful portraits.

Wow Merv there'll a problem if they all grow up like that one Shhhhhhhhhhhhhh I don't think we're spost to keep em.
Yeah that's right Andrew....it is actually very illegal to keep Australian fauna from the wild.....anything kept as pets has to be captive bred and you have to have all the necessary paperwork. The fines can be that hefty for this sort of stuff you can actually lose your house. I would imagine you should be ok until they are a little bigger and can fend for themselves....but unfortuately yes you will need to release these little cuties.
Sorry to spoil your fun....I am a reptile owner myself and truly don't believe in taking anything from the wild. Good job to save them though.

Hi Merv,
Did a few tests here for ya. I'm another that mainly uses Firefox. Doesn't display in Firefox. Using IE Tab in Firefox (kinda like running IE 7 from inside Firefox) I get a red X for the image and lastly I get the same in IE7 natively. Hope this helps.

Welcome back Shay! I'm not sure what's been organised, but I was talking to Justin recently about an outing to the Brisbane Gallery of Modern Art one morning for some architecture shots. Perhaps we could include some shots of the William Jolly Bridge. I think you're allowed to take cameras inside the gallery...not sure though.

Hey everyone,
I just received this from a friend who's in the QIPP...
The Qld Professional Photography Awards are being judged this weekend – it is free to view and all the prints scoring 80 or more ( ie at least silver award go out on display.
Go to www.qaipp.com.au for all the details of where and when. It’s on at the Kelvin Grove campus of QUT.
I'm going on Sunday arvo if it's still on then. Should be good.

Let's organise our next outing... maybe one where alot more of us can come. Our very first outing was probably the best because there was a good amount of us. Why don't we try get an outing more organised so most of us to attend. A lot of people have not yet met eachother.

I drove over there on the first Sunday in December last year. I must have got there about three-ish and there was only two or three people there :(. Maybe I was a bit late.
I've been meaning to get back over there to try again. Any idea what time the bulk of them are usually there till, Helen? I understand they gather around noon.
