Hey Feng, a friend of my sister has just moved back to oz from Zimbabwe where they used to run a coffee plantation. crappy country to run a farm in, but the fresh coffee was nice when I tried it.

Yes Feng coffee making can be an expensive passtime. But not as expensive as photography;) I LUST after an ECM Giotto, but every time I save up almost enough money, I go out and buy a new lens or something:cry: Ah well, the old Sunbeam will have to do another couple of years.

Paul... yes... ECM Giotto is great.

I lust after a La Marzocco Linea ~ http://www.lamarzocco.com/linea.html ~ with a Mini Mazzer ~ http://www.mazzer.com/catalogo/prodotti.asp?id=4 ~ grinder. *sigh*... one day... I could buy a 1D series camera for the price of the machine :|

Mmm, see if I can continue on this loose theme here. Anyone for a little sticky wine? I love my desert wines. :D :D I did this yesterday after seeing the coffee shots. I also did a Port sipper and cheese plate but wasn't all that happy with those ones.

Mighty hard to control those reflections in the flutes even in the sealed light tent.

Yeh, the usual color of the stickies are a rich gold or amber. There is one in my fridge calling to me .... drink me.... drink me...

Sometimes I wait for a special occasion to open these. They average about $20-$30 a bottle, 350ml bottle that is:(, so they disappear quickly:cry::cry:. A lot of mine come from trips to Stanthorpe.

Oh... and with that light tent, do you use flashes? or do you use like studio lamps?

I think you are supposed to use studio lights. I didn't feel like moving the spot lights in my lounge into the dinning room where I had set up things so I just played with the flash.

I need to play with this sort of thing a lot more to get the hang of it.

I'm off the the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art this afternoon to get some architecture shots. If anyone wants to join in, I'll be doing a few indoor shots about 4.00, then I'll be off outside at about 4.30 or so to get the "outside" shots. It closes at 5.00.

Any takers?

Not me. I go to the Digital Subgroup meeting on the Tuesday (3rd March) and sometimes the competition judging night (Monday 12th. I think). If you're thinking of joining, speak to Diane Francis who is usually at the desk as you go in. You need to write your name in the visitors book and pay $2 for supper. The meeting on Monday should be good though. Cynthia O'Gorman is launching her book (full of great images) and Fred Hunt (who is an amazing photographer..he uses "large format cameras still :-D) is giving a lecture.

great shots all up Greg...

most, if not all of my shots the last month have been of my bub... she's growing nicely... most of the shots are indoor, and it's just not bright enough... i crank the iso up to 1600 almost all the time, and just noise ninja the noise out. Just wondering what people do when they need to light up sensitive subjects like babies which would be susceptible to bright flashes?

here's one of the later images... DOF is a bit shallow, but again... ISO constraints (didn't think I'd take on 3200 just yet).

I found last night was really good. The people at the meeting were really friendly, not to mention very talkative - obviously about cameras and such. Try talking about technique to a mother or sister who have relatively no interest in photography as an artform! ;) Talking about it to the people there was the best part of the night. Now I'll be attending the digital meeting too.

i have all ways wanted to go a club like that. But i to shy.....lol

Being shy shouldn't be a problem - they're a welcoming bunch. I was nervous before I got there, but after walking through the door it all subsided. I'm really glad I took the plunge and went. :)

That s*x big time.

At the moment I'm going throught the paper work to get a blue card. A mate is the coach of the Qld youth volleyball team and I'm going to take a few shots of them training / playing. The Blue Card is to make it all above board in case I'm questioned. I feel we are really going over the top with a lot of these restrictions both real and imagined by the general public. In fact it is the lack of understanding of what the real laws are that cause all of the problems.

The surf lifesavers seem to have this idea that they are more than just lifesavers there to help people in the surf. They have made submissions to the senate about proposed new laws prohibiting photography on beaches ie they are in favour of these restrictions. I don't believe that they should pick up a role of being a police force on the beach. The incident about illustrated that both they and the police know nothing about the real laws here.

Yes, it's a well known fact that upgrades to security meant that video surveillance cameras now covered most of the city centre Brisbane...so we're being filmed most of the time we're in town. On the drive from Brisbane to the Gold Coast, virtually every inch of the M1 motorway is watched by cameras (have a look next time you drive down The Coast). There are security cameras covering most of the beach and shopping areas in Surfers Paradise when you get to the coast. But heaven forbid you take a camera out of your car and "gasp" photograph someone on the beach. how long before they release the storm troopers to arrest you for taking photos in public. Their proof? They have you on video of course!

Greg and I were questioned by security while taking photographs in the grounds of the Port of Brisbane Visitors Centre recently. Don't these people have something more important to do than harass us?

Soon you'll have a whole generation of children that have never used a film camera. It has been estimated that film has (at the most) ten years before they totally pull the plug. It's so easy to get a cheap digital camera these days that it makes film no longer worth it for most people.

And on the other matter at hand... anyone want to help me build a time machine? :p I want to go back to the carefree days :)

If Dupain was a woman, would the police have pulled him up? I would suggest probably not.

It's plain to see that the fear of photos being taken for illicit purposes (read pornography) is what causes the over-reaction to surreptiously photographing people in public, especially on a beach or the like. And virtually all such "photographers" would be male.

Unfortunately, the internet has a lot to do with this sad situation. The ease with which porn can readily be made available to many viewers is obviously a huge concern to the authorities, and rightly so. And even if the photography was honourable, there's the danger the images could be misused by someone other than the photographer (photos of children being particularly vulnerable).

The Net is a fantastic resource for genuine photographers, but the "dark" side of it makes it a double-edged sword.

Merv

In that case, I'll have to stock up on all the slide film i can. And maybe some medium format as well.

Although I must say that i am suprised with how many people do still use film. It gives me hope that it might have a future. I went along with my dad to a photography club meeting at mt gravatt last night and id say there were more film shooters there than digital.

hehehe that's what I'll start doing at some stage. If you have enough film, chemicals, paper (and a negative scanner if you wish) then you could continue to use film and develop it yourself for a good couple of years after they stop selling it. I don't know how the process differs for slide film but the same idea of stockpiling should apply to that too :)

How long does film last out of the fridge?

I had some which I bought and had in the fridge for about 2 years... I then took it out it's been in my film camera bag for about 2 more years since then. would it still be ok?

If so, it's free to a good home ;) (if anyone's interested in film)...

I'm also not sure if it's good.... they are:

2x Ilford ISO 400/27 HP5 Plus 24EXP
2x Ilford ISO 125/22 FP4 Plus 24EXP

If anyone wants them, they're free to a good home. PM me if you want...

Edit: Oh it's B&W film too (unless you can obviously tell by the product code (which I can't ;)))

I don't know about Kodak BW400CN. Not enough contrast for my liking but that could have been the place I got it developed at.

I'm on a roll of Ilford HP5 atm... just to see if it is any better. Severin Koller (http://severinkoller.blogspot.com/) uses Trix... whatever that is (I'd never heard of it beforehand). I'd like to get my hands on some of that stuff... he produces some nice results.

The stuff I'm really keen to try is some Kodak 400UC (Ultra Color). It seems to be the best stuff for architecture as it brings out the colour of the buildings. Seeing that it is supposed to be "ultra colour" I'd also like to try it on some long exposure shots. :)

hey guys, no takers on tuesday nite?

quick update fm atherton.. no birds at the swamp, very disappointing, and my aunt is not keen to lend me her car, so all my photography has basically been in the back yard or at the local park. I did get a very unusual piccie though, can't wait to get home to process. I was photographing a grasshopper (big brown one), when along came a little green one. Well, the brown one went to investigage, and i have a great photo of a face off between the two grasshoppers! I also got some shots of some birds, cute pose of a willy wagtail, and also of a green bird with a white circle arolund it's eye, eating berries of the bush. Some bees, other insects, see what giv es when i get home.
Apart from shay's outing, anyone interested in just getting together local to catch up with each other? Roma st parklands and coffee? or somewhere else? Feng, you could then bring family along and we can meet your latest addition. (and your wife as well!)

Apart from shay's outing, anyone interested in just getting together local to catch up with each other? Roma st parklands and coffee? or somewhere else? Feng, you could then bring family along and we can meet your latest addition. (and your wife as well!)

yeaht that would be great... i'm sure it would be fine... any of the parklands would be good... we've only been to the newfarm park once... so there's that option... and the other option is obviously Roma parklands.

I'm not familiar with many parks in Brisbane... so open to suggestions. :)

The one and only time I have been through the Roma St Parklands was at 1:30am after some friends and I went to the Normanby Hotel for State of Origin last year. Not to mention we were all slightly intoxicated. :p So I suppose an outing would be nice. There's plenty of public transport, even on Sundays, so yeah I should be able to attend. :)

But when the business sells we have to move down to melbourne but we'll only stay for a few years then back up we come! We'll probably end up living in Brissy or even further north it just wont be for a good few years :(

Hey all,

Sounds like most had a pretty good day. The zombie walk is SO in my diary for next year. Reckon I'll dress up too.

Went to Laserforce today and Dad took some pictures of me and my brothers and sisters during the games, hopefully there are some cool shots.
And my nose hurts cause I walked into a wall (which I thought was a pathway... :o).

Anyways, I'm out for the day.

Hahaha I read about the guy when I got home from the BCG meeting... surely he must be up there for a reason. -spam-, when you say you "just" see him with a 75-300mm, do you mean it could be solved with a 400mm or a 2x extender thingy on the 75-300? Not saying I have either, I'm just curious. :)

Speaking of meeting, it was nice to finally put faces to (some) people's names. Hopefully I/we might put some more together at the next meet... whenever (and wherever :p) it is. :)

I bought another photography book yesterday. :p

Digital Portrait Photography and Lighting by Catherine Jamieson & Sean McCormick.

Very impressive, well set out, lots of info on a wide range of things from lighting setups to posing. Actually the posing section is very good with pages and pages on different body parts and the effect that some of the poses have on them and how to get avoid awkward looking shots.

Smaller section at the back of the book on Photoshop that is more directed towards Elements. A couple of Appendices that have references and info on setting up a business. Overall a good book!

I entered the Brisbane Camera Group for the second time and judging was last night. I entered four images in the "A" grade comp and got three awards (two merits and an honours PLUS digital image of the night PLUS image of the night.)

I was really disappointed when they stuck me straight into A grade because I thought I'd never win anything, but it makes you try harder. In the competition last month, I entered three images and got an honours and a merit. Very pleased:D:D:D

(And thanks Kelsey Lee. My portrait of you got a merit:D)

Gosh, I've been extremely busy this term. But all of my school work is finally done.

I spent Easter at the beach. :D With my mounds and mounds of chocolate.

The POTN Book is nearly done. We just have to get it all laid out designed ready for print.

I have to write my presentation for the next Digital Meeting of the BCG.

I'm going to Laserforce tomorow, and Movieworld on Thursday. (Great photo opportunities!)
Then I'm getting a german exchange student on Friday, and we have the Spit Photo shoot on Sunday.

And somehow I've got to fit in painting the three commissions I'm being paid for, and find out whether or not I got the job at Mr. Whippy.

Yay! for the holidays. xDD

I've handed in my photos to be graded. That was about a week ago. So hopefully I'll be able to enter the comps soon!

Oh, and I - I got *cough*my*cough* first L lens! :D:D!!! It's an EF 24-105mm f/4 IS USM. I'm so excited, but I have to ask before I can use it. :(

I might even put it in a national and see how it goes. We should do another outing, see what we can get again!!
Kelsey, you look great in that photo, and hope they don't take to long to grade you. What a busy holiday you are having! How long is the german student staying for? Helen spent some time as an exchange in germany (if my memory serves me right). An L lens hey? whoo hoo!

I want to go to the Roma Street Parklands.

i did mention the parklands for sunday 22nd. Any takers?

Kinnon, great to meet you on sunday. How did your photos turn out? Did you get to the coast? My photos were crap! I should have taken my s2 out instead, it does macro, and see how it would have turned out. Lucky no leeches when i took my socks off!

@ Paul - Congratulations! The judge (I've forgotten his name) wished the graveyard shot was his... obviously he liked it ;).

@ Kelsey - how much did the L set Tony back? :p

@ Tina - if I don't have to work, I'd surely be in for the 22nd at the Roma St Parklands.

There were plenty of buskers in the Queen St Mall yesterday. Spent something like $4 on donations... the four of them there were really good. I managed to get a photo or six :p

I also scored a free Yashica rangefinder last night too - once I get a new battery I'll put it to use doing street photography. It seems way quieter than my 3000N's shutter. :)

Hey Tina, great to meet you too. I got some alright shots. A couple of the natural arch and some good ones of the paper daisy's, my fungus ones turned out crap too :( I played around a bit with some of the photos last night but ran out of time, so I'll have another go tonight and see if I can post some up.

I drove home through surfers but couldn't find a park and also I was just too tired and couldn't be bothered.

I didn't take my shoes and socks off that night until I was ready to have a shower at about 11. I was too scared too. I kept asking aaron if he could see any leeches on my back or anywhere that I couldn't see. He just shook his head at me and laughed.

We didn't end up going again yesterday, I was too buggered so we're heading up that way again next monday.

Oh and what's happening on the 22nd sorry? Must have missed that one. I'm keen if Bunnings hasn't booked me!

i thought a casual get together would be nice, bit of photography, and coffee and chat with each other, as it's been a while since a lot of us have got together. I tentatively suggested the 22nd, at the roma st parklands. That way feng can bring the family too, so we get to check out bubs. But i have to wait and see who is coming. By the way, i got 3 images in! and justin has 2 so far.

hmm... looks like work will prevent me from attending on the 22nd.

Anyone going to the photographica fair next month? Im meeting up with a few flickr people there and afterwards to test out any new old equipment i buy.

what is the photographica fair?

humble pie tonight, only 2 merits. The judge didn't like too many of my images. But vicki (vicksta) did well, an honour and a merit (or was that 2 merits vicki?) well done!!

I spoke too soon. I checked the rosters earlier and I too will be unable to attend the 22nd due to work. Pity... it sounds like fun :(

Something I have been meaning to ask since last night... what is everybody's grade (if they have one)?. You do not have to say, I am only curious. :)
