My family(uncle) has one of the largest turf farms in Qld just north of Caboolture. Believe me when I say it is all very green :) They get way more rain than we do in Brisbane and they have dams upon dams.

Those mountains you are looking at in the background are The Twins which are part of the Glasshouses.

Nice shot Helen.

I've posted a couple more from out Spit outing last weekend with BCG. Off course they are more shots of Emily (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?p=3078384#post3078384).
I also did a bit of still life (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?p=3078361#post3078361). And some birds (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?p=3078442#post3078442).

Just got home, so not enough time to load the photos before we go out to dinner.

On the way home there was a 2 storms coming from the east and west so I tried a bit of storm chasing, the only thing I acheived though is to actually chase the storms away  I tried stopping at several different places but I don't think I really got anything great.

Off to dinner then bed I think, I'm stuffed! (after I load the photos!)

Greg_C
22nd of April 2007 (Sun), 16:51
my total was about 280, culled down to 220. I probably need to get a bit more brutal and delete some more of the others at I'll never do anything with.

Looks like I've got the day off on Family Leave today, Aaron spent the arvo yesterday after I got home throwing up. He started to feel a bit off on Sat night and had a rough night's sleep. Yesterday he slept most of the day but kept saying he was feeling nauseated. It's passed now but he's a bit drained from it so a day off to recover is needed. Dry toast and water for a while until he can stomach something stronger.

Wow nice storm last night. About 9:10pm we had a big storm come through that dropped 33mm of rain. Now we need follow up rain over the next few weeks to bring a bit of life back into my yard. Doesn't look good though with winter usually being very dry.

After using my hat several times yesterday as a light diffuser I bought a small one today. :p

This one here (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=018&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&viewitem=&item=280106859461&rd=1&rd=1): It folds to about 20cm so I should be able to cart it with me on outing like yesterday. It was only $21. B & H had some about 1/2 the size but with postage they were going to be about twice the price.:(

Nice... be cool to play with the gold reflector :)

Speaking of B&H... tempting to buy a couple of items if people want to split the costs... obviously just after smaller things to keep the cost under import duty rates etc... Not urgent, but the exchange rate is great atm! :)

The gold reflector is so cool, but you have to have a model with the right skin tone. ie those shots of Emily I've taken recently usually had a gold reflector. It didn't work nearly so well on fair skined models. I've actually got 2 of these already, but they are the 42" (106cm) ones and largish to cart about (even folded) if doing macro work. I still wouldn't mind one of the 12" ones from B&H so I may be in on the bulk order.

HelenThura
23rd of April 2007 (Mon), 01:11
lol, after using Tina's 2x extender on the w/e I am looking at the exchange rate and BH and thinking mmm what else do I need/want.

Why I am not surprised that you went off to Mt Cootha afterwards? When I was half way to picking my dad up, I got a call from Mum saying she was able to pick him up so I could have stayed :(
Went up to the farm that arvo anyway and took a whole lot more photos, round the 240 mark. Now I have to find a free moment to take a serious look through them.

Kinnon I am impressed with your 500+ and amused at your literal storm chasing.

Now I know Tina has the Tamron 2x extender designed for lenses over 90mm. I was really impressed with the quality I got using that with my 70-200f/4. What other extenders do people have?

Also I know a couple of people have extension tubes as well? Which ones do you have?

I've got the Kenko tubes (12,22,36) and a Canon 1.4 Tele. The kenko tubes are good value - I mean how do you stuff up something that is mostly air.;) I did see one guy on here that complained of the fit, but I've never had any problems and all others that also replied never had any trouble.

Wow nice storm last night. About 9:10pm we had a big storm come through that dropped 33mm of rain. Damn! We got a piddling 2mm! What is it with the northside? Are we doomed to become a desert over this side of the river? (Our tank did get 1/4 full though:D)

Lol Paul,
We didn't even get a drop, as we were driving back down the hwy and down Gympie Road we could see all this lovely lightening in the distance. I got home and jumped on the rain radar and the rain was all on the Sth side as usual.
Our tank is getting installed at the moment.

We had all windows in the house closed during the height of the storm - it was blowing in that hard from all directions. I went down stairs this morning and found a cloths basket in the middle of our covered pergola had 1" of water in the bottom. The rain would have had to blow in about 2m to get to it. If we had a tank I'm sure it would be close to full. It blew in under our front door and soaked the carpet:evil: but then it's surprising that it didn't just go straight through our front door its that cr@ppy.

oh no helen, what a time to tell you. we missed you.
i have to admit i am not 100% happy with the converter. I think it makes the image a bit soft. I need to play more and see if it is me. I have to manual focus with it, which could be the problem. It could also be my lens, as i tested it with my 35-128, and it works very well on that. But of course, i don't need it with that lens! I can't wait to get my 100-400, i want an L lens! Maybe i should get the 70-200 as well. aghh, pull my head in!!

storm?? rain?? huh! not here!

paul, i won't be coming in to brissie for the anzac march. Ralph and i will be doing the local ones here in ipswich. I am very tired at the moment, so much on, i really can't face going into brissy again on wed. I have so much to do, and i might be down the coast for the w/e too, so i have to get my van ready for monday. Back to work to earn some dollars!

I booked my tickets to canada today!! wheee!!

HelenThura
23rd of April 2007 (Mon), 07:21
Tina, I was actually very impressed with your 2x converter. Up until today when I have done a lot of reading I didn't know much about converters other than the fact that the Canon 2x mk 1 was shocking and the 1.4x was great - that has changed now that the mk 2 has come out in the 2x.

This has lost a bit of sharpness when I saved it for the web to keep the file size down but on the original it is really sharp.

I need some input... what do people think I should use for Wednesday? Should I get some low-saturation film like Kodak 400NC (http://search.deviantart.com/?section=browse&qh=boost%3Apopular+age_sigma%3A24h+age_scale%3A5&q=canon+kodak+400NC+in%3Aphotography) just to be a bit arty? Or should I use my remaining roll of low-contrast BW400CN (http://search.deviantart.com/?section=browse&qh=boost%3Apopular+age_sigma%3A24h+age_scale%3A5&q=canon+kodak+BW400CN+in%3Aphotography) as well as a normal roll? BTW they're both 36 exposure and I'm not known to take excessive amounts of photos so I should only need two. :)

Hi all,

Sorry for my disappearance for the last couple of weeks - it has been just that sort of time at work.

Also - I have managed to secure an arrangement with the people at Mt Barney lodge (down past Rathdowney) to display and sell my images. They took a few over Easter and managed to sell 2 of the biggest window frame pictures to a single person. Needless to say both the Mt Barney people and I have very happy with the arrangement and they have been asking for a bunch more.

I am trying to get to the ANZAC march as well - although I will be marching if I go not likely taking pictures.

Cheers

Great shot Helen.

I'm probably going to go to the march, I have to take some shots at the marshalling are for my Father-in-law, who is with the surf lifesavers group. After that who knows where I'll be.

Great news there Ken, well done. Hey Paul, it's dark outside now and if I used a flash on the door it might break it! We will replace it soon.

wow helen, that is sharp!! i take it you shot that with the 200L? i can see i am going to have to rethink my lenses. The converter i bought is a tamron, "pro" version, because the canon won't fit the 70-300. (cost about $330 )However, if i bought the 200, i'll get my 300 to 400 distance. hmmmm. I have been having issues for a while as to whether my lens is as sharp as i want it to be. It could be me, but i really think it is the lens.

Went to the ANZAC day march. It was a very emotional affair and I captured a few shots of both the happy and sad bits.

Couple of shots here (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?p=3099861#post3099861)

I too went to a parade for ANZAC day. Things got a little hairy camera wise, its tough using a different camera after spending 3 months using nothing but a canon.

My shots can be found here (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=309936)

Also, here is one that i played with just before, it didnt really belong in the people section with the rest of them.

There were some lighter hearted moments at the ANZAC parade. This band major was suddenly distracted by someone in the band (hitting a wrong note perhaps).

I thought of titles for this image ranging from "I sense a great disturbance in The Force Luke," to the ubiquitous, "Who Farted?". Perhaps you can think of a better one...

welcome Al! Don't believe them for a minute!! Certainly not me!!;) Blame greg and paul!!   (especially greg!):p
I had an s2, and i loved it. It just so happened that the 400d came out, my mum gave me some money, and the rest is history. The trick is to learn your camera, and use it to it's best ability. A bigger trick is to get your mum to give you some money!!(make that a lot of money!)

paul, i am going to use the plamp for holding a smaller diffuser, so if i am photographing close up of flowers, or even insects etc, i can shoot in sun, but diffuse the light. I aso read you could use the arm to move/hold out of the way distractiing plant bits near what one wants to shoot. Seemed like a good idea to me.
I have downloaded pro-show, and only opened it yesterday. Without reading too much instruction, it was very easy to work out how to select the picces, time frame, which way to merge to the next, but i ran out of time, and came slightly unstuck for the music. I have to sit down again and have a look without rushing. So far it has been a breeze to use.

great shots people

i won't be going to oz zoo, i really really need to save my pennies for canada

I'm actually telling a bit of a fib in my signature. :p The Olympus is Mum's (I actually prefer NOT to use it - it's that lame) and the A75 is Dad's. When I say "at my disposal" I really mean if I need either they'll be glad to lend it to me (seeing my digital camera died ages ago). :p

Dill Pickles may cost $5.95 but the sweet 'n sour ones are free :)

It will be interesting to see what Powderchair do - I prefer Silverfinger as a name but know why they probably didn't choose it due to the band called Goldfinger.

Here is my photo from the midnight service at the Shrine last night. It was an interesting service but it was nice and small which was really good.

HelenThura
25th of April 2007 (Wed), 08:01
I like those cracks Greg, but agree about not been able to see the rollie.

A BBQ sounds like a great idea.

Has anyone seen Marty Pouwelse's photos? here are a couple of links - Flickr (http://www.flickr.com/photos/ozlandscapes/), own website (http://www.ozlandscapes.com/) and storm chasing (http://www.bsch.au.com/martypouwelse/severeweather/favourites.html). Carjo

I made the impromptu decision to attend the dawn service as well as the march. 90% of the crowd were already there, so I just found an empty spot in the bottom of the square and tried the best I could. 5 shots was all I got.

I have a journalist from brisbanetimes.com as a contact on deviantART. So if I get a dslr before ANZAC Day next year I'll "try" to see if I can somehow get a press pass so I can get into the good areas. I doubt it'll be anything more than a pipedream though ;) By the looks of the website they have their own photographer. I think I may have done better - let's see when I get the prints back. :)

I saw a few hot air balloons going along the river later on, so I got some shots of them. I also got some previously unattainable shots thanks to the road blocks, barracades and the general lack of traffic. I got to the marshalling area around 9am and met up with Greg soon after. Almost lost my tripod there for a second. :p Took 7 shots of people that were there.

Headed up to my spot near Starbucks - saw Paul en route. Stayed there once the parade started, used the rest of that 36-exp roll and a whole 24-exp roll. I left to find a restroom - took me half an hour. Got back, changed rolls and took another 18 shots before the parade finished.

I wondered why there were so many Harleys on Elizabeth St. I found out why when I got back - there were bikies in the parade.

All in all it was a good day, though I have thought of a few things that might make it better if I go again in years to come. :)

My dad had a tamron 28-300mm for a couple of weeks. Seemed like a good range for a film set up, just not for a crop DSLR. The optics wernt that great but they certainly wernt bad either, especially for the price.

f3.5-6.3, so its a bit slow on the long end. Its a macro lens as well though (apparently). There is also the 28-200 f3.8-5.6, which is a bit less expensive but almost identical.

here is links to both on B&H,

The area which we were in for this was quite misty as you can see in Tina's photo so basically all I did in PS was up the contrast to bring back the depth and sharpen it a little bit. What it really shows is the quality of the lens I was using the 70-200mm f4 L. I tend to forget how sharp and the colour it has till I get an image like that in PS and go mmm I love this lens.

You have been busy, Phil. I trust you're enjoying yourself?

I have too much fun to enjoy myself.

Glad to hear it.
I haven't seen UQ since I left it about four years ago now. The grass (or lack thereof) in the Great Court (and no doubt everywhere else) is certainly looking a bit sad these days.

And I'm sure that construction stuff outside Forgan Smith was there when I left

how has your holiday been phil? i went to belgium last year for a couple of weeks, staying with the family of the student i had living with me. He lived outside of brussels, can't think of the town off the top of my head. I had an absolute ball. Nice shots.

Ohhh, what have I missed? :o Practically 15 pages worth of posts. I'm disappointed that I missed Sunday's meeting... but I guess I wouldn't have made it anyway even if i'd known about it since I had to drop my German exchange student Chris at the airport and say goodbye to my other German friends. I can't wait till finish school, because I'm going back to Germany for schoolies! (legal drinking/nightclubbing etc. age = 16, my age when I graduate = 16/17 lol) Then I'm going to tour around europe, england etc. and africa with my friends. I already have a car, so I'm lucky I don't need to save up for one!. (I haven't checked here since more than a week ago. I'm ashamed.) Have'nt had time due to... socialising :D and other important stuff like *cough*school*cough*.

I'm doing my presentation at the Brisbane Camera Group this Tuesday! *is excited but nervous*.

I am still alive... just busy. :) Gosh, and I don't even have a part time job yet.

Please send the rain here to save our dying gardens. And do some macro while you are inside .. then you would have a brighter day for sure.

Come on .. show us your Macro skill ...

I just realised that Photography disease can be a psychotic one ... you just wanna take pictures of everything and anything ... For example, before I cook my bright orange pumpkin I need to take its picture first lol.

Let us know your strange photography indused psychosis.

Peace to you all ...
