Hi,
Kelsey I realy like number 2.
How often do u guys usualy meet up? Do u have any usualy meeting places or every outing is different.
Have u ever tried the local car dump. There are lots of old cars/rust/ and sometimes animals. Great for close ups.

Hey Tim,
We meet up a fair bit. Some outings that are short notice only have a few people attend because of other commitments etc... But other outings that have been planned for a while (eg. Currumbin) usually get more of the group there. It is always good though because if you plan on shooting somewhere you can just ask the group if they care to join.
The local car dump sounds like a great idea! We will have to remember that. Has anyone thought of a date for the cathedrals?

Thanks :D And welcome to the gang Tim!
As Justin said we meet up quite a bit. If we feel like shooting something and want company we generally post here and see if anyone's interested. Other times we plan an outing for the group and find the day best for most people.
I didn't even know there was a local car dump, but it sound like a great place to get some shots!

It's fine. Asking is the only way you'll find out.
I've only been to one meet so far, and that was the Mt. Cootha Botanical Gardens and Toowong Cemetery, but Justin's been to a few.
Are you going to join the Brisbane Camera Group?

hahah not that it's long... just it's slightly off topic... ;) this can be our rambling thread ;)
I've only been to one meet too... which was the same one that Kelsey went to... cept I met up at the Cemetery only. Was great to put faces to names... and have a good yarn. oddly enough, there wasn't as much camera/geek talk as you'd probably suspect... actually just talked about what we did for work, what our other interests are, background, etc etc.
It's always fun to meet people with at least one thing in common and discover that there are in fact HEAPS more in common than first thought ;)

Our very first meet was a shoot where we met in the city at 5.30.
http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=212431
and then there were a couple of night shoots in the city
then we were off to lone pine koala sanctuary. I was going to find all the threads but I realised it is a waste of time. After Lone Pine there was pretty much just everyone being busy around christmas and new year although we have been to the cemetery a couple of times now. The group has mentioned plenty of ideas so we will have to catch up on them. Things like whale watching, fraser island, st helena island, bird watching, camping and even new zealand have all been mentioned! If you go to the search option just type in Brisbane POTN and plenty of threads will come up for you to go through.
Hey everyone, should we all go together and shoot Australia Day fireworks ? Just an idea maybe someone can get us a good spot....
Any way Tim now you can go through all the threads and catch up !

tim, i like the idea of a car dump. One of this year's comp titles is wheels, and i always like to try and get something different, so a dead tyre could be a goer. Hmm, a thought just popped into my head, a tyre grave, with flowers! and no pinching my ideas, you ipswich club members!!

the end of creek road runs into the brisbane river, at murrarie, it does have another name for the last bit, can';t think of it off hand. I'll be there about 5. anyone care to join in? There is a bird roosting place there, with herons, egrets, ibis, pelicans, i'll add my link in a sec. It is on the right hand side as you drive in, near the end of the drive.

I remember thinking how great my 3mp camera was! and that was not that long ago either. You know, when i shoot raw + jpeg, i only get 225 photos on my 4 gig card, so that's only 900 photos. Now to start a MAJOR argument;) why don't you guys that shoot raw shoot jpg it is so much quicker to process:D :D ;)
Cider, we've always had a thread of our own floating about. Usually titled what ever our next planned shoot was going to be. We'd then run this for a while afterwards before switching to the new thread. We're a bit of a chatty bunch up here, plus reasonably active as we're out shooting together every two to three weeks.

I'm up way past my bed time!! Truely!!
My subscription to and electronic Sci Fi publishers web site came through tonight. Been waiting a few days for this. The publisher is Baen (http://www.baen.com/) and they put out heaps of books I like. They have a eBook area a lot of which is free, so you sci fi fans take a look. The subscription gets me advance copies before they are published - with no protection. There's a very interesting article on their site about digital rights management that bags it heaps. It seems Baen are making more money from the exact opposite idea, make some stuff free on the web and people will go out and buy the book if they like it anyway. I've book Baen books in which there was a CD with a copy of all of the authors other works (published by Baen) to that date!! It is a little hard to read a complete book as html though.

Greg, I've started shooting RAW now. And decided to shoot only RAW rather than JPEG and RAW. I think I still need to get the hang of it but will probably learn all about it at TAFE :D .
I play around with RAW every now and thenbut always seem happy with what I can do to the jpg's. I've probably had only 3 or 4 images that I could'nt do something with the jpg's. These where when I stuffed up some white balance big time and only the raw could fix it. My bad, bright stage lights through off the white balance. I'll usually use it as an insurance policy.
One day I might convert for good but for now I got a bunch of actions and stuff in PS that I love that usually mean most shots are finished in a few minutes.

I generally just shoot RAW and convert them into tif/jpeg but I can't figure out how to actually edit the RAW image directly. I got to the right place accidently once, but I think that was with my Photohop CS2.
wakko
18th of January 2007 (Thu), 19:16
@ Kelsey: Yeah photoshop CS2 has a camera RAW importery thingamy-dohicky-whatsit... Personally, I use RawShooter which has a great browsing function too with batch exports to TIFF etc.
The main thing I like about RAW is that... I can keep what I've changed, and go back and manipulate it without image loss. With JPEG, if you do your conversions, and save it without saving as, it's a destructive save. With RAW it's just a 1KB 'settings' file so to speak. Biggest plus for me cos I keep stuffing things up ;)

Hi Kelsey-Lee,
In PS CS2, I open Adobe Bridge and use that to download the images from my camera into a folder I named "Imagedump" in my digital images folder on the computer. (I use a USB card reader.) While still in Bridge, just open your folder with your RAW image files in them and double click on the image you want to work on. It automatically opens CS2 and the Adobe Camera RAW window as well. You can work on your image in Adobe Camera RAW and change a whole bunch of things, then you can click open to open the file in the standard Photoshop window. Note, you are still working with a RAW file and should save it as a TIFF, JPEG, or PSD or something like that. :-D
Alternatively, you can just use something simpler like RawShooter and then save the image and work on it in PS later on.
justin carpenter
18th of January 2007 (Thu), 20:20
Kelsey you might have to download the raw plug-in though for photoshop. I use Photoshop to convert my RAW's but i also downloaded Windows RAW viewer so the raws photos can be viewed in the same sort of way that Windows Picture and Fax viewer allows you. When you have this it also shows the Raw files as thumbnails.
Tina, luckily you shoot raw so you can change the WB when you process them :D

i copy my piccies into a folder in my documents. E.g. i have a general folder, like, potn meets, and then sub folders for the dates/places. Same for cairns, i have sub folders for the diffefrent trips i do up. I then have a major folder where i keep a copy of my best phtos i've worked on, broken into sub folders for birds/nature/landscape etc.. I have a lot of folders in my documents, but i've found that the easiest system.

Mmm I can see I have a lot of work to do to convert you folks to an Image Management Database.
Really is the best way to go and you'll wonder how you ever did with out it. Here's a link to a detailed description of my workflow (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showpost.php?p=2485076&postcount=10). I may have pointed some of you at something like this once before I think. I REALLY REALLY recommend IMatch as an Image Management DB. I'd be happy to help anyone get setup with IMatch. I'll be honest and say it can be a little confusing when you are first using it, but I reckon with some help you'd be able to use it no worries.
Let me know if anyone is interested and we can work something out. Maybe a good topic for a non shooting get together?? I run IMatch on both my laptop and desktop machines (legally:D and you only need a single licence to do this ) and just sync between the two so I can bring the laptop to demo it.

Hi Greg
I'm definitely interested in something like that...
How does it handle RAWs? and on top of that RAW AND JPEG :| I'm sort of lost as to what I want to use/do/whatever/whereever... :|
I has full RAW support and RAW and JPG at the same time is ok - I do this sometimes myself. What you do is tell it to scan a particular folder and it goes away and does this. It creates thumbnails as part of this process. You then come along and add category data to the images when ever you like. I'm in the habit of doing this ASAP.
Remember we are talking about a DB program here and not an editor of any sort. It'll do slideshows and there are lots of options as to whether it uses it's own thumbnail or uses the image (for speed). Supports offline images so if you burn some stuff to DVD it will still be able to show you what the image looks like via the thumbnail inside the DB. Lots of scripts for web page creation also.
In less than a minute I could sort out all shots of my kids that that have me in them shot also, who care when they were taken or what folder they are in. Want to know which shots you've taken with your 24-70 at F5.6, easy as two or three clicks and its done. You quickly get away from the idea of running everything from folders, although you still can as there is a folders view. Want to open an RAW file into CS2 just right click and send to CS2. If you then save a TIFF from this it will automatically index this one just after it has been saved - if you want it too.
The first screen capture shows the folder view, the second the category view for my web posted stuff. The Red and Green bars are colour codes you can add to make the images stand out.

Greg,
I might be interested in some support in this area - I currently use a program called Image express and have a workflow that seems to be OK but am interested in i-match as I think my software is reaching its limits.

Very nice shot Justin, I use gradient fill layer masks a lot also for this type of thing. Great for blending the exposure of different parts of the image.

Wow! That's a fantastic panorama. Very well thought out and executed panorama. Couple of questions. What did you stitch it with? Did you stitch together TIFF's or JPEG conversions?
I use Panorama Factory, but it has problems stitching together more than 12 TIFFs. The file becomes just too big and the program just shuts down. Even with 12 shots, the final image is something like 150Mb or more.

Greg, what do you use to catalogue your DVDs? I've been using an Access database I've put together. I keep refining it because I often think of different ways I want to search for stuff or additional information I want to store. I've seen some of the software available for download but nothing really takes my fancy as yet.

Hi Nick, I use CATvids (http://www.fnprg.com/catvids/). It's a cool front end that uses an access DB so you may be able to import directly from you existing DB.
Nick C.
20th of January 2007 (Sat), 03:26
Thanks for that, Greg. I had come across CATvids on my travels. Like many of them, I think I may have dismissed it thinking the amount of features was a little overwhelming. I'll have to set aside some time to read up on how to customize and use it properly.
I hope you're right about importing because re-entering the amount of data I've got is not an attractive prospect.

I took a quick peek at it again Nick, definitely an import function but only from a text file, tab, csv or space separated files. You can map the fields int he text file individually to the specific DB fields. If you are handy with access you could just merge your data I guess.

Thanks Paul, I converted the RAW images to JPEG before stitching them, then once it was stitched I saved as a JPEG and edited it in Photoshop afterwards.
Should I have saved the photos as TIFF's?
I use Zoner Panorama Maker, a family friend got it with one of his Pc User magazines.

If you have the space to save them as TIFF files, it's not a bad idea. TIFF retains all the original data in a non destructive manor and has its own compression algorithm which is also lossless. JPEG is lossy especially when you resave the image after editing or resize the image. However, for panoramics, JPEG is sometimes the only way to go because of the small file size. I'm going to make a brave statement here that Greg will probably disagree with, but I suspect JPEG files will go the way of the Floppy Disk Drive.

Quick rundown, discovered a tamron 2x will fit on my lens!! (shopping tomorrow!)
Got some lovely little birdies, and some not so little birdies, tree kangaroo (and overheard a dad telling his son about this tree kangaroo, which he pointed out, and said they can climb trees. i proceeded to look over the edge of the rail into the pen, thinking some more, but it was a wallaby!! No hope for some people!!) Also cute baby koala shots, pelicans, ummm, the list goes on.. oh yes DRAGONFLIES!! The only thing i didn't shoot was the kangaroos/wallaby's. Went for a swim afterwards to wake up for the drive home. great day out!

Mmm I was looking at these the other day. Be interested to see how it works out. I remember reading that with the earlier versions you lost the little focus squares. I reread it last week and it seems this has been solved. This was the one thing that had turned me off. There were reports of metering changes but again latest reports discount these. I kinda know how you feel Paul. I had some high hopes for my Pelican shots - trying a bit of panning. All of them are just a little bit off. On reflection I probably needed to at least double the shutter speed from the 1/250 it was shot at. I really wanted to TOTALY freeze the motion. Oh well - my bad.

Yeah... if you're into manual focusing, then you'll love it... the old split prism focusing screen. You litereally pull out the old one (clear/frosted) and put in the split prism one...

I did the original version 7 or 8 years ago in frontpage and haven't changed a whole lot since. Needs a total makeover I think, ditch the theme that being used and start from scratch again.

yeh, oh well. another day. waiting to see what ken turns up as he had my 70-200 and was shooting much the same as me. Nice work on the Major Mitchell Tina.
Greg,
Many thanks for the loan of the lens - got a couple of fair shots but generally disappointed with my efforts as well. Maybe I just have lens envy from seeing you guys with the big glass:lol:

Shay,
Look like it would be good - I would be interested in that. Being ex-military - I sometimes miss the access I used to have to fun things liike that.

Since birds are all the rage at the moment here, I though I would share one of my photos from the other week.

These are a few of the many birds who visit my Grandfather each afternoon. When I was up there the other week I think counted at least 5 different species in the space of about 20 mins.
Paul, those ducks at UQ crack me up.

Nice birds Ken and Helen. Just read in my local paper that government House is open to the public on Australia Day, It's a fairly nice looking place, with really nice gardens, might help fill in some time waiting for fireworks or JJJ's no.1 song.

I love that shot Helen. I think the composition doesn't get much better than that (rule-of-thirds and all that). Well done!

Enjoying looking at all these shots, people. Keep 'em coming.
Feng, I think the reason Katz Eye don't make screens for the 5D is because Canon produce and market their own interchangeable focusing screens for the 5D and 1D series. Probably just another reason for Canon to add a little more cost to the more expensive cameras.

Ken, I firmly believe there is a learning curve with new lenses. Usually a new lens will means steps into a area of photography that you haven't ventured into. This takes some getting used to usually. All this means that you'll have to borrow it again some time to learn more!!
Hi Helen, that's a nice shot, it sound like a nice backyard that your Grandfather has.
Got to work today to find a package waiting for me. :D:D. I'd ordered this from ThinkTank in the US on 12/1. Nice people to deal with who have cool bags and accessories. Be nice if they had an Aussie agent.
Lightning Fast - Padded case with water cover for my 580EX flash. Will fit onto my Lowepro Belt. This is to make me use my flash more. Lately when its been in the backpack I don't bother to use it as I have to get it out. I figure if its on my hip I'll use it more. We'll see how the theory plays out.
Pixel Pocket Rocket - CF card wallet - holds ten somehow? I've got 4 in there now and the wrap around is a little tight --- but it works.
Big Stick - Monopod bag. Fits well, could do with a strap to sling it over the shoulder. It does have a series of loops though so you could feed something through these.

Yeah I read something about that somewhere... although I don't think they're split prism ones are they?
I know one other company that has started developing one for the 5D... will investigate the 5D/1D interchangeable screen thing... I don't think I can live without it now... but will definitely have more of a play :)

I agree with you there Greg. I'm still coming to terms with my new aquisitions... hopefully by the time wifey pops the bub out, I'll be learned enough ;)
