View Full Version : rattling noise on the XTi

I've had my XTi for nearly two weeks now, and I am absolutely impressed with the image quality that it has been producing.
I have noticed however that there is a slight rattling noise when I give the camera a jolt. Does anyone else have this rattling noise with their XTi?
If it helps, the noise is minimized when the flash is popped, but there's still a slight rattling.
No cause for concern I'm hoping, but more of just curious of what other XTi owners are experiencing.

Mine does it too, i'm pretty sure it's nothing to worry about. It appears to be from the mechanism that pops the flash up. Hence it being quieter when extended.

i have an XT and have a similar noise (kinda like a small ball in there?)..this noise is from the mechanism is to enable to camera to know which way you are shooting (horizontal or vertical).

I noticed the same problem with my XT. I believe the noise is from the flash springs and guides. Nothing to be worried about. If you pop up the flash you can see the two metal pieces on either side of the flash. You can wiggle them, or hold them and the noise stops. So that's my guess

its probably the metal runners that support the flash when its up. i get a little noise if i pint the camera up and down quickly if i have the flash closed.

I had the same rattle with my XT. I found it went away if the flash was up

Listen carefully while you turn the camera from landscape to portrait. I believe what you are hearing is the orientation sensor.

100% on target. Don't worry, your camera is supposed to make that noise.
Best regards,

I love how its called "the advanced orientation sensor" on all of the Canon advertising but is probably just a B-B in a plastic track with a switch on each end. Anyway, if anyone’s camera ever dies and you get the hankering to open it, post pics.

I concur, mine has the same rattle and drew the same conclusion as you.

I have the same issue, but don't regard it as a problem. It was that way when new, and with a lot of travel and bouncing around the noise hasn't increased or changed at all, so I'm sure it's not anything to be concerned about.

Thanks for the response everyone. Phew! I am quite relieved. At first I thought it was perhaps something that has become dislodged from within my camera body.
Boy, I can't say this enough: I love POTN :D

It's the links for the pop up flash, if you pop the flash up and it goes away, then that's what it is. Completely normal.

Sets a parameter in the pic header telling it what orientation was used when taken. Some post processing software is smart enough to know to use this flag and will orient the picture properly.

The camera makes a noise when it is shaken.
The built-in flash's pop-up mechanism shakes slightly. This is normal.

Flash or orientation sensor, of both? On my 5D, which has no flash but does have an orientation sensor, I hear a very faint "click" as the camera is rotated from landscape to portrait and back. It's definitely not a rattle. In any case, the camera's that have pop-up flashes are known for this noise.

Ha Ha Sweet! Don't get a beter answer than that.
As for the orientation I would imagine they would use an accelerometer set up as a tilt sensor. Much more reliable and accurate than a mechanical switch or B-B. But, I know nothing about the construction of this or any other camera. Just my $0.02

If it's the orientation sensor that is making the noise, how come poping up the flash gets rid of the noise? As flash being on doesn't affect the orientation sensor and it's recording.

Thanks for posting that Greg. Certainly does clarify any concerned I had about the unit, lol.
