I posted this in the people forum and got a few responses but not as many as I had hoped. I thought I would try posting it here as well.

I used one 430EX flash unit that was triggered by an ST-E2 transmitter. The flash was off to my right and positioned towards her at roughly a 45 degree angle. I had a Lumiquest diffuser attached to the flash. The picture was taken with a 50mm f/1.8 lens at Tv: 200, Av: 5.6, ISO: 100. I think I used a FEC of +2/3 or maybe +1.

Next time, I'm going to try to rig something up as a reflector to get a bit more light on her face. Anyways, here is the picture. What does everyone think?

Pretty girl(friend), but not a great shot (at least not to me).

It's kind of boring, and not very well lit. A front light source would bring out your girlfriend more (which I assume is the aim of the shot ;)), and shooting at a larger aperture would make the background blend a little better.

I did some quick PS on it, I hope you don't mind. I fixed the levels and helped the colors out a little bit. If I spent more time on it, I would have made the background more uniform and done some airbrushing, but I was lazy ;).

not quite feeling what shes wearing on her head, as it blends into the background on my monitor anyways.

maybe slow down the shutter speed a little, so you can blow out the background to bring her out some more.

-ninja edit-

AirBrontosaurus just did what i was thinking :P

I like the skin tone on your edit.

I tried shooting with the light more straight on and it just seemed to make her face look flat because there were no shadows at all. Any suggestions to get help out with that?

Hmm, her pose isn't really helping the situation, her body and head are forward (her hair and hat are creating dark streaks across her face), and dark shadows all over the place. Assuming that you don't want those, you really have to get some light in there. The quickest, cheapest & easiest way is to use a big refllector and "adjust" the pose slightly.

well, i was bored so i did a quick edit, hope you don't mind :)
i don't think it's that bad of a pic, pose could have been a bit better though. i'd have liked to have seen more of her eyes and maybe a little less shadows, but like you said you're working on that, so that's good.

Cute girl, I like her pose and the shadows that are cast on her face, but the hat, hmmmm doesn't do it for me. It just seems to distract.
