Not sure if this is the right forum....Everything I've read so far suggests not shooting directly into the sun, as it may damage the camera's sensor. Does this apply for sunrise/sunset? Should I use a special filter?

There is a great thread covering this topic. You can view the thread "here (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=230785)" But to summarize, your more likely to hurt yourself than the camera. I wouldn't set it to 30 second exposure wide open pointed at the noon day sun, but the camera will attempt to choose a setting appropriate to the light. Remember though, that the overhead sun is one bright sucker and if your looking to shoot that, a filter may be very appropriate or all you get is a huge glowing spot. Sunrise and sunset shots can be shot quite easily.

You mean something like this :D Shots like this rarely work. Can get a "sunset filter" if shooting near the horizon. Or you could try backlighting by having something directly in the way of the sun so it radiates around it.

At sunrise and sunset it's not a problem:

Great Mark, now all we need is a backlit example that is directly in front of the sun with the glow radiating around it to comple the examples...... anyone? :D

i'd suggest making sure you have a UV Filter on your lens to protect it. thats your best bet while shooting "into" the sun

Thanks Joe, not quite though, looking for a sun shot where an object is framed in front of the sun and the glow radiates around it. Anyone have one?

Here is one of mine but not quite what I meant cause it is more of a silhouette.
