I am thinking about buying an Academic Version of Photoshop CS3 when it comes out in the spring. My wife is a college professor. I have a few questions.

1. Is an Academic Version a full version, with all the bells and whistles?

2. Is it upgradeable when a new version comes out?

3. Are there any issues, problems, concerns with Academic Versions that I should be aware of?

4. Can anyone recommend a legit vendor?

Thanks

1. Usually they are the complete package, no different than a store bought copy. Teachers in the family are wonderful assets.
2. Almost always but check the fine print.
3. Nothing more than with the non-academic version since it is the same thing.
4. We purchase ours through the school. I have seen web stores offer academic versions as long as you are able to confirm you meet the criteria.

Keep an eye on the Apple Store for Education (http://store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/routingpage.html).

The Academic version is complete, but the licensing may restrict commercial use. (Terms like 'academic use bla bla only' mean that)

Academic versions of Adobe software are never upgradable. They give you such a good deal on the software that there is not a reason to give you more of a good deal.

I am going to a community college and I got the full version of Photoshop Suite thru http://www.uscollegebuy.com/s.htm Its only for California colleges. Start in the upper left corner to get to the student section. Its a GREAT deal, but again there are restrictions. It is the full current version and I love it!!!

Adobe has a page (http://partners.adobe.com/resellerfinder/na/education.jsp?nav=aofc) where you can find a place close to you (if you live in the U.S. or Canada, since that's all they list).

If you look at the bottom of the page, there are some other educational links. JourneyEd was one I couldn't think of earlier.

A distinction is made between "Educational" licensing and and "Student" licensing. Student licensed versions can be upgraded with purchase of the relevant upgrade. There are also upgrade packages available. Unfortunately, student licensing is not available to teachers. If I understand the website correctly, they would have to buy an educational license, and it can't be used for any commercial use, and it isn't upgradeable.

Once you finish with school it becomes a regular license, i was told. And the upgrade prices are the same for retail and academic, pretty much(at least at UCLA). And that price was around 150 last time i checked.

This is apparently no longer the case. From the Adobe website:

So - after forgetting to do a multiquote, and being too lazy to fix it another way -- here are my answers to the original poster.

1. Yes - with only very minor differences -- see FAQ from my previous post
2. Yes
3. Not really -- see the FAQ for further information
4. Adobe

Everyone,

thanks so much for the replies. Sound like the way to go to me. One more question, I am just a hobbiest, should I go for CS3 or spring for the Suite?

Thanks again

My son bought the educational version PS7 during college and has upgraded to CS and then to CS2 with no problems. When he first loaded PS7 the slash screen stated Academic Version, but on subsequent versions that disappeared. He purchased it from http://www.gradware.com/ and since has purchased other software from them and has been very satisfied with their service.

Just thought i'd let you know that i looked on the adobe website and read up on the cs3 beta, and saw what versions/pkgs were available for upgrade... it listed education as a version that you could upgrade from in the spring when the new cs3 is scheduled to be released. Check on adobe.com and click on the cs3 beta topic under ANNOUNCEMENTS.

If i could get the cs2.3 on academicsuperstore for 389, and then upgrade to cs3 in the spring, that would rock!

I'm gonna have to check into it some more. It almost sounds too good to be true.

Does anyone know what the upgrades usually cost?

Thanks a bunch...
guess it's kinda silly to order cs2.3 now, and then shell out another 125 or 150 to upgrade in a few months...

What's your opinion?

any word or idea on how much the cs3 academic version might cost, assuming it's going to be offered that way?

it will probably be the same price, but it hasn't been arrounced. Should be available in the march/april range. Lightroom Beta ends 2-28, I'm not sure about the cs3 beta.

That's odd. I've been able to upgrade all of my Adobe Academic Programs, with never a problem. Started the upgrading process over 4 years ago, and it always worked.

Jfrancho... you are correct. There is a Student purchase, a teacher purchase and the school fleet purchase. I have the student purchase and the full suite cost me $218.00... I did the upgrade to Acrobat 8 and added Dreamweaver for shipping... 5.46. When I am done being a student, I go to the full retail upgrade price. The new version of the suite is now $224 and this is shipping and handling.... I love it!!!

Where did you find it for 218? I've found it for 389, but that's the cheapest i can come up with...

I Love my camera, here is the link... http://www.uscollegebuy.com/s.htm then click on Start Here in the upper left corner. Now, this is for California college students only. Its the best deal I have come across.

Thanks Marsha50. I live in Arkansas, so i am not eligible... dangit!

I will check with my school i work for and see if they are able to order it at a reduced price or anything. I also just finished up with my masters degree at UALR, so maybe i am still eligible for benefits under that category, who knows!
I appreciate your help.

Thanks.

As bad as i want it, i think it will make a lot more sense to just wait and order the cs3 when it comes out instead of buying the cs2.3 now and buying the upgrade in a few months.

I can get the CS2 academic version, but I've heard that it isn't upgradeable. So my question is, will CS3 come in an academic version as well? If so, how long after the release will the academic version be released?

Thanks,
Ed

Yeah there will most likely be a CS3 academic. Academics use adobe products a lot. I am sure a big chunk of their profits come from the academic side of the house.

I'm sure it was mentioned, but you can upgrade from an academic version to the next (or same) full release starting around an average of $159. ;)

Direct:
https://store1.adobe.com/products/creativesuite/ (choose your current app and upgrade)

Sounds great guys! I checked out the other thread. If I get CS2 academic now, I can upgrade later, but.....I think I'll hold on and wait till CS3 is released. I figure it'll save me about $150.
