Shutter Speed Dialog

Maybe it's late and I'm not thinking, but why is the shutter speed dialog not a straightforward 1/shutter speed? I was thrown a bit when I entered a shutter speed of 90 with 1/100 in the drop-down to get a displayed shutter speed of 1/9s. I had to enter 900 in the dialog to get the right display. Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong or not understanding? Thanks.

Thanks Pekka, sorry I didn't read that earlier. But one question, isn't it possible to do the conversion just before it gets saved to the database rahter than having to input it that way? No big deal, just thinking aloud.
