View Full Version : Focus creep

I was trying to take an overhead picture earlier today using a Nifty Fifty, but unfortunately it kept creeping out of focus (it was a long exposure too - tripod and remote release, so no holding the focus ring to keep it where I wanted it).

Has anyone else experienced this with this lens? or should I look at getting it into the shop for repairs?

Many thanks

gonna guess you had the lens in manual, try it on af where the gears should hold it in place. if it was in auto, i would send it in or buy a new one.

Thanks NYCGrip,

Yes, the lens was in manual; it hasn't happened in AF before so I guess it's ok:)

ah hah! Another benefit of the 50/1.8 MK1 has been discovered! Its damn near impossible for the MK1 to creep in manual. I suppose you can either deal, or use some tape or something.

I will tell you that my 70-300IS used to creep until I sent it in to get that vertical distortion thing fixed. It came back nice and firm, no creep. Its not really worth it to send in a $80 lens tho. Maybe just use your 60mm macro lens instead?

You're right, Sirsloop, I did change to the 60mm macro, and got the shots I was looking for:)

Always carry some Blu-tack, very useful in stopping lens creep.Always used to have this problem when camera was mounted on a copying stand.
