View Full Version : Such a thing as a softbox for a 430EX?

I'm using an umbrella right now, but I'm thinking I'd rather have a softbox. Is there such a thing for a small flash unit like this? Also, would it be redundant to use a stofen or something into an umbrella?

I think lumiquest make a softbox that might do the trick.

I got one from lumiquest for my flash. Worked ok then I got the stofen then I found myself doing without either and opted to bounce the flash. I still carry the stofen just in case ceiling and walls are dark though.

Chimera have speedrings and small softboxes to suit on-camera flashes.

Are you using it on or off Camera?

I have a couple of things I carry.

1) For off Camera, and I love it http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=Search&A=details&Q=&sku=42122&is=REG&addedTroughType=search

2) For on Camera, I gave up after the second Lumiquest plastic soft box riped and went with the westcott mini , again love it! http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=10335&A=details&Q=&sku=62832&is=REG&addedTroughType=categoryNavigation

i'm using this off camera and that last thing you posted looks great. Maybe someone can tell me this. What are the benefits of an umbrella over a lightbox and vise versa? I am wanting to do headshots, portraits, and currently, i need to do some product photography of clothes and I'm beginning to think I need softer light. I guess what I'm asking is, should I get this softbox instead of my umbrella? Should I keep the umbrella and get a softbox too?

Just posted in another thread, I recently got Lumiquest's Promax system. It can be configured as a bounce card, difusser, and various others. Getting some very good results, and this is before I've even got a decent D-SLR.

I prefer a soft box because of what the catch lights looks like. I prefer the square catch lights, but that's just my personal preference. Also when I use umbrellas in a small space I can actually see the umbrella's shape ( meaning the metal supports, what ever their called) in the catchlights. I agree with the previsous post as well that spoke about less spill from a softbox and in my pics the light is a bit softer with a soft box. Hope that helps.

I agree about the catchlights.

Photoflex make umbrellas that you can make square, by moving the ribs.

You can still see the ribs a little however.
