Had to sprint out of the car to find a quick spot to take this shot before sundown (about 3 minutes later), so not a lot of time to prepare for the shot. Was taken handheld with 5D, and 24-70mm lens. C&C appreciated.

To me it looks like maybe the water was over sharpened. Just my opinion

On that pic, I adjusted a bit the levels, cropped it, and applied some USM, maybe a bit too much. Here is a copy without any PP other than cropping. Thanks for your comments.

I think it is a nice shot, however a little boring as there is nothing in the foreground to add to the composition. Maybe a tighter crop (horizontally) would have improved it a bit.
I like the PP you did (other than the extra sharpness) though!
not too shabby indeed!

Sunsets are one of those events that you have to be prepared for and the sun is not often the best part. I am thinking about the clouds in this shot and wondering how they looked a little after the sun had set. Might just be worth hanging around a scene like this and squeezing off a few more frames after the sun has gone. You might be in for a surprise.

Thanks SkWeEkiE for the comments. I took this one as my daughter, and her friend were looking at the sunset. No pp involved other than cropping, and resizing for web. After I walked around, I found a boardwalk that I though it would be an excellent foreground subject to complement the sunset, but the sun had already set, so in in my agenda the next time I'm in the area.

Great suggestions bobscape. I did stay a bit longer waiting to see those creamy red colors spread on the sky after the sunset, but I didn't come across that. Here are 2 shot almost right after the original posted shot. No pp involved other than cropping, and resizing for web. Thanks for the comments:).

Nice capture Mike, I have to agree with SkWeEkiE but, I only think the problem is because the image is a little washed out. I had a play with the levels added a bit of blur and pushed up the hue and hey presto.... Hope you don't mind and like the results. Oh I cropped a little too.

I applied some color correction and flattened out the water. I also noticed you have a little spot of dust at the top directly over the sun. I didn't clone it out but it is quickly fixed by cloning, or cleaning sensor.

Attic, I like the contrast in your edit. but the horizon gets blended on the left side of the pic, at least it looks that way on my monitor.
Goforphoto, your edit looks great, the colors makes it a totally different shot. I like the blur effect you applied to the water, and how the sun now has a reflection on the water.
Thanks you guys for the edits, and comments:).

Execution (focus, exposure, composition) is excellent. The only weakness is that the subject matter is less than spectacular and that's no fault of the photographer. I'm sure you would have better cooporation from the atmospheric variables on anothr day.
I also find your image of the couple in the forground very dramatic.
