10D Cfn-04 & -13

Hi guys,
I'm a little stumped.
I have set the focus lock for my 10 D to the <*> button through Cfn-04=1
Of course now I can't use the <*> button for AE lock. (I've grown to love this BTW, although it's a little rough on my thumb)
If I read the manual correctly, setting cFn-13= 4 sets AE lock to the assist button (to the left of the * button). Isn't this correct?
pressing hte assist button does not get me AE lock.
Where am I going wrong?

CFn-13=4 sets the assist button for FE lock (for flash), not AE lock.

With my setup I have CF13 set to AF on th * but what then happens is my AE lock is on the shutter half press. :)
