Hi i have my 20D and i was just wondering if some one could let me know if the 580 is worth the extra $ as of right now i do not have any flash except the pop up flash on the camera after just buying the EF 70-200 f/2.8 IS USM my wallet could use a break if the 430 does a good job.

This thread (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=264772) should help.
In that thread I provided a few links to tables that compare specs and features.
It's truly a personal decision based on individual need and economics.

I went with the 580ex cause you can expand later and use it as a master. Its also really powerfull.

The way I look at it, is that the flash, in the larger scheme of things, is generally one of the least expensive components of your camera system. In my mind, it just makes sense getting the best flash when the difference is small ($140) between the the two. Looking at lenses, and camera bodies, the difference in price between the best, and average components can be staggering, and I could see wanting to save some money there.
IMO, I really like the 580ex. Its a powerful flash that can really light up a room. And I also like that it can serve as a master to the 430ex and other 580ex flashes. It was worth the $140 difference over the 430ex.

I started with the 430 and found it more than adequate. When I decided to go wireless I bought the 580 for use as a master. Unless you think you will need the extra features I would think the 430 is more than enough.
