Ok, I am going to Bike Week in Daytona. I have two 512mb cards. I can put about 70 pics each on them. If I want to shoot more than that, do I have to buy a lap top to download them into or is there some magical device like a temporary storage thing that I can buy?

I think a portable hard drive is the way to go for you. There are many different kinds on the market. I have an X's-Drive Pro and love it. I have also heard that Image Tanks work well too. The concept behind both is the same, but they offer different features. Basically, they are both just hard drives from laptops. You plug your CF card into it and copy the files onto the hard drive and keep them there until you get to a computer. You can buy them with many different sizes of hard drives, or you can buy without the drive and install it yourself.

You could shoot in Large fine JPEG and get about 400 pictures :)

But seriously.. I think you can download to an Apple Ipod.. For about 300 bucks you can get one with a 20 Gig hard drive.. If you're not using it for photo storage, they're great portable music machines.. My daughter has one..

There are quite a few brands of image tanks/digital wallets with built in hard drives. They're pretty reasonable too. Search google for those two terms.

Of course, a laptop is the ultimate.... If you can go that route, do it.

For under $1000, you can pick one up loaded with WindowsXP, with a 2Ghz+ Celeron CPU , 512Megs Ram, a 40 Gig hard drive, a CD Burner/DVD player, a built in modem.. etc... Dell, Compaq, and HP are a few brands that make sub $1000 laptops..

With a laptop, not only can you store images, but you can preview them and even edit them with your favorite photo editing software while you're on the road.. And of course, you can use all the other applications a full computer offers..

I use a 30mb FlashTrax which works great but have just added a card reader to the Ipod so I have music and somewhere to dump pictures.

Since (I think) Bike Week is this week, you probably need a solution you can carry out of a store with you. The laptop is a solution. If you want a device like the X's Drive or Image Tank, you may have to look hard. I saw a Delkin Picture Pad in my local camera store - which doesn't do you much good unless you're in or near Baltimore - look at a good, local camera store, not Ritz (I've tried several Ritz's on this, and in every case the person I talked to didn't even know such a thing existed). I also saw a device like this in CompUSA.

Hope this helps, have fun in Daytona, and say hello to the Norton contingent if you see them. :D

Have Fun
