I'd like to get my 580 off the camera shoe and I'm not sure the best way to do so. I currently only have the one flash but would soon like to add more lights. I'm looking for recommendations on the "right way" to do this. This is only a hobby, I'm not a pro. I take pictures of my daughter and my girl friend. I would love to get more creative with light and experiment with my girl friend. Ha ha:oops: Any suggestions would be great. See equipment list below... Many Thanks,

you can do it wirelessly or wired.
wirelessly you have pocketwizards or the ebay alternatives
wired you have the Canon/promaster off camera shoe cord 2 for ettl, or a sync cord for manual.
with the Canon cord you can handhold it, attach it to a flash bracket, or have a lightstand very close by (>3')

Here's a thread (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=246797) with some ideas, and a little editorial comment from me.
There's no single "right way" to do it.
The cheapest is probably a PC cord and a PC - hotshoe adapter for your flash. Manual control only.
On the other end of the cost scale, there is also the ST-E2 transmitter. For just a little more money, you could get a 430EX to use off camera with your 580EX as master. These options allow E-TTL control.
