Oh, it's on Sunday! I am going to try to make it. Can I park at the Verizon Center? I don't care how much, just can I? My sons are old enough to go with me and I think I can convince my husband to take us and out to lunch as well. Oh, I wish I didn't have to make such decisions. Sundays are so hard because we have church. I'll keep you posted, Jon. Thanks for the PM.

Logical meeting place would seem to be Gallery Place Metro Chinatown (7th & H St. NW) exit, which is by the Friendship Arch where the parade ends. It starts forming up at a little park between 6th, I, and Mass. Ave. NW.

Parking? Dunno. Might have better luck a stop or two away and take a short jaunt on Metro.

I think it's Presidents' Day weekend, so some people may be away. I was thinking of heading north to NYC, but it would be crazy trying to get there.

These meets are really informative for me and I enjoy seeing everyone from the area. Jon, bringing 2 camera bodies? I'm thinking the 5D with 24-70 and 20D with 70-200. That way I get the wide and the tele. Think it'll snow?

Thanks for the post and the PM ! I'm not sure if I'll be able to make it. I've been working 60 hour weeks and haven't had much time to pick up my camera much less go someplace.

2 for sure. 24-70 lives on the 5D and 70-200 on the 20D. Probably 3, since I usually keep the A620 handy for periscoping. Maybe even the D60 with the 24-105 if I feel the need. Fills in the gap between the 24-70 and 70-200 nicely (of course so does the A620).

For people in Maryland and Virginia I would suggested parking at one of the outer Metro stations like Franconia Springfield as they have much larger parking facilities then the stations that are closer in, many of which have little or no public parking.

Jon,

Count me in :) A great chance to meet you all and grab some super shots as well.

Thanks Suzie for pointing this one out to me...I don't visit this particular forum nearly enough.

So, my 135MM EF L on the 30D and my 85MM EF on the DRebel XT...will this work for the parades? I have not shot in this venue before.

Jim - check your PMs - you were on the original mailing list!

You might want at least one wider lens too. The dragons are often stretched out and there's a "teaser" in front of them; plus there are bands, floats, etc. I used both 24-70 and 70-200 on my D60 and 20D last year. And used most of the range on both. Streets in the area are about 4 lanes wide. I was on a corner so could catch them coming and going.

I might be in the area at that time, since it's my son's winter recess from school and he wants to visit his favorite cousin in Germantown. If ever we go through with the trip, I'd love to hook up with you folks.

If for some reason we'll be staying here in NYC (due to thick snow and all that) I will be in the Canal area instead.

Getting close. I'll figure on being at the 7th & H exit from Metro from maybe 1-1:30. PM me if you want to arrange to try to contact me outside those times. I'll probably set up at 7th and I, as the parade turns a corner there (based on past years) near the start.

Suzie - you been able to convince Ken he needs to handle the piano recital?

I'm figuring on getting down there around 1 at the Gallery Place Metro exit on 7th and H, depending on how soon I can get my wife and sister there, and moving back along the parade route starting around 1:30 before setting up at 7th and I around 2-ish.

Based on last year, they form up along I and 6th Sts for a starting point at 6th and I. Along I to 7th, down 7th to around F, up 8th or 9th to G, across G to 7th and back up to H, where they finish under the Friendship Arch.

Sorry all, can't make it. We're supposed to leave for Maryland this afternoon, but I think it would be too dangerous to drive. I had to dig out my car from all that ice for more than an hour before hitting the slushy roads.

Anyway, I would love to see you all next time, perhaps at the Cherry Blossom Festival. Jon, You are right when you said my son is right - it is good to keep up family ties, even families in photography. Looking forward to that day when we all shoot again!

Jon

Bummer! The major roads down here are clear. I guess you got it worse up there. OTOH, it's too cold here for us to have slushy roads!

I'm coming I'm only about 1hour - 1:15 from the rockville metro.

Is the Gallery Place Metro the one that all the lines run into? Is there a contact person who I can get a cell number for just in case I don't recognize the group of people with the large lenses.

Jon
16th of February 2007 (Fri), 22:17
PM sent. Gallery Place is where the Red Line crosses Yellow and Green lines. Metro Center, the stop before, is Red, Orange and Blue. And no large lenses, probably nothing bigger than 70-200 or 70-300. Just lots of them.

Jim! Great Shots! I have a cold and couldn't go. I caught my son's cold, like usual, at the exact wrong time. Jon looks good and I would have loved the parade and the hot chocolate at Starbucks. Oh well. Catch you at the cherry blossoms.

Red, lots of red. It was cold and windy. Oh, that's too bad. It looks like they didn't clean up the ice well either.

We even had short church meetings today because the parking lot was so bad. I hope to catch you later in the spring. I also don't do well in ice. I fall just looking at it. :(

Suzie,

Count me in...unless I'm on babysitting duty that is. I have a standing babysitting assignment every first and third Saturday of each month as both my daughter and my wife work on those two days and my son-in-law is usually out on an AMTRAK run.

Air & Space is fun (the one in Chantilly). Just went there about two months ago with the local camera club, sadly though we only stayed for something like a few hours. Not enough time to read or photograph everything of interest. You really need at least a whole day.

Kind of. He still likes to jump on the counters and try to eat things he's not supposed to. He doesn't listen very well either. I think I may have to trade him in on a version that's working correctly.

Taking care of the puppy is a priority mission and the right decision...glad he is better...don't "trade him in" as that is just the kind of puppy you want...full of fun and mischief :) I look forward to meeting you on the next outing in NOVA. Suzie is trying to set up a trip to the Air & Space Annex at Dulles AP next month perhaps.
