Is just me or is this a lot of noise?
I can always live with the noise if its a great shot.

It's not too bad, I've seen worse!

Remember, for editorial stuff, the story is paramount and quality comes second. Hence, you often see out of focus or ridiculously grainy goal shots in the papers on regular occasions. It was something I had to get used to when I first started as I was overly critical when editing my work, now I send anything! lol

Keep in mind,
Text: Luke Winn/SI.com
Photo: AP

SI uses strobes. AP doesn't. The only part SI did was the text.

AP usually has a lot of noise, or so it seems, with indoor events like basketball.

Most people will, but AP and Getty are the top providers. only Getty gets to use strobes. The other strobes go to in house photographers(which is rare) and SI magazine.

It's interesting. Do you know why only Getty gets to use strobes? Is it some exclusive deal they signed with NBA?

Don't they use strobes attached to the rafters(ceiling) that are controlled by wireless?
I can't imagine anyone allowing on-camera flash from the floor at any ball games.

That seems like alot of noise to me. I would have at least cleaned it up before I sent it to them....I cant believe they think this is acceptable....

I think you will find that at the end of the day, getting the photograph is more important than the noise.

Anyway how do you know what it's going to look like when printed?

So true...it doesnt matter how good the IQ is when I send the picture to the paper, the paper prints are not very nice...but I would think that a glossy cover could do nice job...

Yeah, I can live with the noise when it's a great shot too, and that's definitely a keeper.
