Okay so a bit of a play on the ideas... lets shoot at nighttime, when the sun goes down when we have to be creative about our source of light.. whether from fill flash or tripoding it with slow shutter speeds whatever it may be lets shoot at night.. now, keep in mind folks that we want to know HOW you do what you did.. and ofcourse stretching all of those muscles that we don't normally use I for one don't shoot at night very often.. so, it will be something new.. all the rules are the same but, excuse me if my photos aren't posted until Tuesday and my internet is running again.. good grief i'm getting impatient..

Since it's night here already, I guess I'm the one to start.

Hope these aren't too dark for you...

Fairly simple tripod mounted shot. 1 minute at f/22. Used a grad map adjustment layer and then channel mixed to inject some contrast. Brought the constant level way low to get the blacks back.

90 degree shot from the previous one again for a 1 minute exposure, performed curve adjustments independantly for the top and bottom of the shot to bring out the stars while keeping definition on the houses.

.. now, keep in mind folks that we want to know HOW you do what you did..

Pete...you forgot something. Nice shots though. I like them both the B&W in #1 really works well and the yellow and brown in #2 is very striking.

I'll have to see if I can get something tonight. Though I was shooting in the dark all day yesterday, theatre shoot, it was daytime not nighttime.;)

Well, after this challenge, my mother officially thinks I'm insane! It was 13 F last night with a wind chill around -25 when I told my mom that I needed to go out and get my shots for this week's challenge.

This one is at Lake Massebesic. I drove to the opposite side of the lake to get the glow from the city over the trees. Taken at around 10pm, f/8, 30sec, ISO400. It had a little noise so I ran it through Neat Image.

As I drove back through town, I stopped to get a couple of shots of the town offices and now the town police have the same opinion of me as my mother. An officer in a patrol car pulled up just as I was setting up the tripod in the empty parking lot and wanted to know what I was doing. When I explained about the challenge, he just shook his head and told me to stay warm! f/8, .5sec, ISO400

Especially considering it was near 70 just a couple of weeks ago! My blood isn't ready for this kind of cold!

LOL! You can use the excuse of too much snow! We haven't had more than a couple of inches yet this year.

couldn't we kind of... extend the deadline a little for this.. I've not had chance this weekend and really do fancy some night shooting...!

The deadline is more a guideline than a strict deadline. So go shoot and postwhen ready. Sari is posting her photos tuesday.

Think I'll pass on this challenge, on the excuse of being too cold at night for me. I applaud all those who brave the cold for their night shots!

I'm hoping for a really easy challenge for this weekend so I can shoot, shoot, shoot.

Well, since it is not that cold in SoCal...I am posting a shot of how much activity goes on after sunset at the shoreline . . . . Sunset Beach with the Vincent Thomas Bridge, the old home of the "Spruce Goose" someone kite surfing, people driving home and some of the largest cranes in the world....

I only noticed this challenge today...must need my eyes checked or something. But I have a shot that qualifies anyway. Came home from work a couple of nights ago. I was sitting on our side verandah having a cup of tea while watching the sunset and as it got darker, there shining back at me was this comet! I kinda stared at it..you know...all mesmerized an' stuff, 'cos I've been trying to get a shot of it for a week (cloud cover stopped that). Then I raced around like a crazy chicken getting tripods out and long lenses and teleconvertors and cable releases and stuff, knowing I only had a few more minutes to get the shot. Also, this was the first time I'd photographed an "astral" body.

I used a 20D with a Canon 100-400mm at 400mm and a Tamron 1.4 TC. I guessed an exposure of 3.2 seconds at f:8 and ISO 100 and got this...

That's great, Paul! I tried to get a shot of it the last night it was visible in the Northern Hemisphere, but by the time I got to my third floor apartment, changed lenses, and got back down to where I could see it... it was gone. :( From yours and the other pics I've seen, you folks down there are getting a great show!

Great catch Paul...I had no idea there was a comet available for viewing
*heads off to Google*

Ahhh Ha! Google Quote:

McNaught’s Comet has been located in our (Australian) skies and apparently it is the brightest seen in forty years.

Its clear appearance in the south west skies had many Victorians star gazing for hours last night with many describing what they saw as "visually stunning, amazing and magnificent".

Thanks all! I thought I'd missed it because it was supposed to be at its best about 8 days ago, but there it was! Must have another look tonight. Comets in the sky usually herald "significant" events, usually bad ones, only if you're superstitious though. ;-)

Like the first shot Sari; very creative.

Is that yellow snow in the second shot? (A bit of brown snow too perhaps?)

good question I've taken next weekend off for the Winter Carnival which has a mardi gras theme to it... So, I'll basically be shooting all day. What about a Snapshot challenge. Something just for the fun of it.. We all have those days when we just take photos for the fun of it..

WOT! A "no pressure to perform" photograph. Can we at least have it as a "good" snapshot so as it's still a "challenge"?

How about sterotypical snapshot, example, someone standing in front of a landmark, sort of a retro feel. KWIM?
