Followed this guy around for a couple minutes while walking on the marsh trail at Metro Beach State Park in South Eastern Michigan. There were lots of woodpeckers around today. Click for larger view.

I love #4. I have no clue what he's trying to do but it's cool

Great shots, nice and sharp, but the last two are special. He's dug out a worm in the cat tail stalk. :)

Excellent captures John. Very good color contrast as it makes the bird standout.

Unusual habitat for a Downey woodpecker John. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you all for the comments. I wish I could have had better lighting for this, but I think it still worked out great. I am happy to start getting pictures I am happy with for birds.

I have such a hard time telling apart Downy and Hairy Woodpeckers, thank you for the correction.

Excellent series. I've never them in this kind of habitat.

I have a hard time withe whole downy/hairy id thing as well. The two keys are overall size and size of the bill. The downy is a smaller bird and has a short and stubby bill. The hairy is larger with a longer bill. Hope this helps.

The Hairy will always have more nose hair than the Downy. :)

Thank you both for the help on providing the differences for help with ID. The above is funny though.
