I am 18, and work as a busser in a restaurant. The restaurant is located in a tourist town in Central California, and we occasionaly have people with fairly nice equipment come in. When I am feeling friendly, I usually strike up a conversation regarding their cameras and lenses. Today I made a mistake. I was seating a couple, and noticed a CANON EOS DIGITAL camera strap slung around the gentlemans shoulder.
"What kind of Canon do you have, Sir?" I inquired. "I recently purchased a 20d."
"THIS IS MOST CERTAINLY NOT A CANON, IT IS A NIKON D50, WHICH AS YOU KNOW IS FAR SUPERIOR TO THE 20D!" he replied.
Now I am no Nikon buff, for obvious reasons, so I let his slander of my favorite possession slide, and went on my way. The comment bothered me somewhat as I had feeling that the quality of the D50 was hardly greater than that of the 20D. When I arived home this evening I googled the D50, and could not help but laugh at its "superior" specifications.

I hope that most Nikon users can appreciate and embrace the Canon Culture, because this gentleman sure could not.

 You should have said, "At least the 20D came with it's own strap!"

Comments like what this guy said to you just kill me. I have owned both, and like both for different reasons. Whenever someone asked me about my camera, I told them what it was and what it could do. I have met many Canon owners/users while using Nikon gear, and have met Nikon owners/users while using Canon gear. Luckily, the conversation revolved around photography and not who's camera/brand was superior.

Which was exactly what I was aiming for. I could care less if he had a Nikon, I was just making chit chat about a common hobby. It is but a sad world we live in now.

if he was so proud of his Nikon, then why would he be brandishing a Canon strap? what a dork! :D

Canon users all have POTN straps...so there are a lot of Canon straps floating around for cheap! And KonNi cameras are so crappy they don't come with straps...so he probably stole the strap from a buddy with a real camera.:p

I met a Nikon D200 shooter (Herff Jones yearbook guy) at the swim meet I shot for the first time on Friday. He was a real nice guy and gave me a few pointers. In return I convinced him to buy the Tokina 12-24mm.

Some people are dip****s but it has nothing to do with the gear around their neck.

True ... I have a Nikon handstrap and if some kid came up to me and asked about my 'Nikon' I would probably say a similar thing just to see his reaction ;-) Maybe he had more of a sense of humour than give him credit for.

HAHA! If only I had thought to say that!

Guess I could have also replied "pardon me sir, but I couldn't hear above the noise" I love these kind of retorts. Unfortunatly, I poses an older model processing unit and I can never get these out in time for them to have an impact. Of course hours later they come but alas, it's too late, the moments over.

You should have spit in his food    Having worked in the food industry years ago I was appalled by the frequency off this type of retaliation. I stayed away from restaurants where I could not see the prep for quite some time and even today will never send anything back, EVER. That is unless you like a snot ball buried somewhere in your meal.

Seems odd that Nikons are still considered to be better than Canon, yet wire services and many newspapers are dumping them for Canon. In the words of an AP shooter friend, "Nikon is 2 years behind Canon in digital technology, they had to upgrade us".

There may be a cost issue more that a quality issue. Who knows. The market is always changing... heck, I was reading the other day that the Sony Alpha series camera is very quickly gaining market share. I think it's safe to say, however, that Canon and Nikon are likely to remain at the top. Who's at the tippy-top? Don't know that one.

Besides, I've noticed that most medical equipment requiring optics is based on Nikkor glass, not Canon. Each has its niche, I suppose.

Considered by whom? I have read any recent review to support the premise that Nikons are still considered to be better than Canons. In fact, most photographers consider each system to have its own merits and drawbacks.

I was talking to the sports guy for the local paper and he had a Nikon around his neck - I noticed he had a 80-200 f/2.8 lens and said "You have some fast glass there" and he was like "Huh? They give me this stuff, I have no clue how to use it"

I was shocked to say the least - but if I feel nice I may give him a few pointers on shooting on a setting other than AUTO...

that about sums it up. so far, i have met 5 Nikon guys while out shooting birds and i can honestly say that they were all great people and very helpful and friendly. we switched cameras and had long talks about birds (not gear, birds).

Might as well have a strap that says "Putz" or "Schmuck."

Or perhaps he's saying, "I blew my last penny on the camera and lens, and can't afford a new strap."

I shoot with a guy occasionally who just got into photography with a Nikon film camera, neither of us care what the other uses we just go out and enjoy what each other can see and produce.

That said, he is jealous about not getting to use my glass sometimes :)

Worst driving I've personally seen is Italy. Make Paris taxis seem downright old-ladyish. I swear, there must be a law in Italy that says whatever you do while blowing your horn is okay.

The good thing is that all the "wars" on canon vs nikon are limited to the internet nerds battling it out on the keyboards online.

Now, if canon and nikon were religious beliefs...

My thoughts exactly. While I do accept other religions...I definitly prefer mine, which is Canonism, and P.O.T.N is my holy book.

Indeed! I, too, am a Canonist!

And judging by the posts of some, our Canonistic faith has its share of fundamental extremists. Some really out there.

I understand Nikonism has the same problem.

Then there are the cults: Pentaxocsals, Minoltans, and even Sonists. What can I say? What can anyone say?

As far as I'm concerned, their camera doesn't matter to me, only thier glass :).
I am part of a local meetup group, and their are minolta and now minolta / sony shooters for those who had minolta glass, pentax, then Canon, and mostly Nikon users.
Therefore, most of the guys I shoot with from the group shoot Nikon, or something other then Canon. That of course, is no problem, some of these folks have glass worth more then any body that we own. They shoot D2h's, and d200's mostly. One guy has a Nikon 200 f2.0 that he uses quite often. It's mind blowing to see that bad boy in person. His friend, however, has a friend, who lends his friend (a little tricky play on words, lol), some awesome glass, like the 50 1.0 200 f1.8, and all those rare pieces of glass.
