I am using a Canon 300D from which I wish to fire a series of studio type flash heads. Without going to the expense of buying a flash gun, anyone know the best way of achieving this without damaging the camera I.E can I attach a lead directly to the hot shoe
Thanks

Nick,

Have a look about for an item called a "Wein Safe Sync". This is a hot shoe adaptor than has a PC out that can be connected directly to strobes.

It ensures that the hotshoe of the camera doesn't "see" more volts than it should, hence protecting the camera.

Cheers

AFAIK the 300D doesn't have a flash sync socket, but you can buy a cheap adapter for the hot shoe, allowing you to use a sync cable. Alternatively you could look for a remote system (wireless or IR) that has a hot shoe fitting. Be aware that some older studio flash systems use a high voltage on the sync and this could damage a 300D's circuits. If you're unsure you can play safe by using something like the Wien safe sync.

Try this link for more info on flash trigger voltages:

Ian's suggestion is the way to go. The hot shoe circuit is connected to the shutter. If you use a flash with a trigger voltage that is too high, (Canon recommends a limit of 6 volts), without a Wein Safe Sync or similiar item, you will eventually fry your shutter, a costly repair. Don't buy an adaptor without voltage protection.
