Guys (and gals),
Sometimes when switching off my G2 the lens stays out. Usually switching on and back of sorts out this problem. Does anyone think that this is either normal or a problem ? thanks in anticaipation of enlightenment.....

I have the same problem sometimes. I hadnt given it any thought tho, since it only happens once in a while.

Warning ... another potentially hair-brained theory approaching ... :)
I occasionally turn my G2 on and it doesn't respond. Although I haven't tried it yet, maybe moving the dial faster or slower will prevent the problem from occurring. Why, you ask? My theory is that the shoot/off/playback dial is not debounced and the switch bouncing into the contact could be causing a malfunction.
Please please please don't give any credit to this idea, as I could be _totally_ wrong. :) Just a thought.

That's what I had figured too.

Of course it is not normal for a lens to stay out after switching the camera off, or the camera not to switch on correctly.
These malfunctions are more likely to occur due to fabric tolerances combined with bad quality control as to ‘forget to debounce the switch’. Probably the lens stays out because either the power-down circuitry shuts down to early or the retraction of the lens takes to much time.
Failure to switch on is likely to occur due to a failure to reset the internal processor, there can be a lot of reasons why this can occur, all related to some malfunction in the electronic circuitry.
If these kind of malfunctions occur up to a level that is annoying, you should turn in your camera for repair.

Hi,
I bought a G2 about a month ago and it started to suffer lens retraction problems almost imediately. After a while nothing I could do would make the lens retract.
I called canon support and they claimed this was a very rare error but was definately a manufacturing fault.
I returned the camera to my supplier (internetcamerasdirect.co.uk) and they replaced it free of charge.
The new one works great and there are no retraction issues at all.
If you look in the manual there is a bit about battery/cf covers that may cuase retraction problems so you prolly ought to check those areas first, then I sugest you get it to a repair center asap.
