Well, photography for me is getting to be a hobby that is costing me more and more money, and I just need tips on caring for my camera. This might sound like an odd question, but how do you deal with sweaty hands. I mean would you go to the extreme of wearing gloves when handling your camera? Or would you just go at it and then clean the body later? If so is there a recommended cleaning solution/material? Thanks.

Ferdinand

The camera should be able to handle this - within reason. I think that if you're paranoid - or a VERY sweaty person - then wipe it down every once in a while (paper towel, handkerchief, etc) while you're out on a long day. If you're not out that long, don't worry.

BUT, every day you use it, wipe it down with your favorite mild cleaning product. Fantastic, 409, Windex, etc. A mild amount of a mild cleaner is fine. The milder the better - you're mainly trying to get rid of the salt, so even a damp cloth will do.

Watch out for lenses, cracks, button, etc. Don't get the cleaning solution in there.

Thanks Scott, yup all I plan to wipe would just be the external stuff no lens nothing else. Sorry spending too much money just turns me into a paranoid freak when it comes to loving my camera and camera gears.

Just wasnt sure if it would hurt the body or cause it to degrade and such.

Ferdinand

Good advice. WHATEVER you do...don't put it in the dishwasher.

Well then don't hang around here on a Tuesday night - that's "Camera & Lens Hurling" night. We all take our most expensive gear and see who can hurl it the furthest.

IanD always throws it backwards, RFM takes great pics of the gear flying by, CDS gets a picture whenever a lens goes underwater looking for quahogs, but in general we all have a real good time.

Next Tuesday is also SWAT training night. We are battering down a couple of doors with a 1200mm, perfect for the job, has the handle on top and everything. If RFM can hurl that 10D further than I can my 1D again, I'll insist he has a drug test.

Pro photogs have really dirty cameras and lens hoods kept on with duct tape. If things get very bad they might get round to cleaning a lens with a used handkerchief or shirt tail. Its a sort of butch man thing.

The only time I get sweaty hands using my camera is if the lady in front of it has less than a full amount of clothing.

If you're getting grit and grime on your camera body from all the sweat pouring out of your pores on your hand, I'd say count your blessings. There are people who go out of their way to get their camera all dirty and slimy just so thieves and thugs won't get any ideas about stealing their cameras. There was a thread about that a while back. Check it out:

Sorry, man. We get carried away sometimes.

OK, usually.

Seriously, the first post I made was a good suggestion.
Well, of course I would think that it was a good suggestion, since I made it.

Sort of reminds me of the "Huffy Throw" we used to have at the NORAB races at Mt Snow. Was a lot of fun watching folks hurling a 50 pound Huffy cruiser around.

Thanks Scottes for your advice. My 10D should be arriving tomorrow, and if I have to put on fiber free gloves to handle my 10D, I will!

In all seriousness, unless your hands are literally dripping sweat, don't sweat it too much (sorry...), the 10D is built to withstand a little abuse.

Can I add?

NOT in the microwave, even if it gets wet!

Put the oven on self cleaning and toss it in for 15 minutes. It works for getting oil outta bowling balls.

Hey don't knock the oven trick. I've saved two waterlogged film bodies by putting them in the oven. No joke.
