Flash for Studio Portrait Photography

I want to get a good flash for indoor event photography. But, I also want one that will make a good portrait studio flash in the future.

Will the 430EX do, or would I be better off going with the 580EX?

Depends... how large are the events you are shooting? 430 should be fine for portraits.

The indoor events are mostly award ceremonies and martial arts tournaments in fairly dim convention center rooms.

430 should be fine. One thing to remember is you can always turn the 580EX down but you can not get more power out of the 430EX.

Like Photolistic says. If money is not a issue go for the 580. You can allways
turn it down but not turn the 430 higher.
