...or something.

Be as cruel as you want, just trying to get a hang of lighting, focal length, cropping etc.

The first is of my mother on the kit lens that came with my Drebel, the second is my brother with a lens which i'm quickly growing fond of, it is a sigma 28-80mm. Lighting is my (new...still getting a hang of) 550EX.

Say the first thing that comes to your mind

 Ya, your Mom is hot, but many moms hate a sharp lens. Soften her skin slightly and she'll love you for it.

Mom looks great!

Is the mom shot straight on with the flash? The second picture seems to be bounced off the ceiling which I generally like better. Maybe it's just because Mom makes such a better model. Anyway, you got the idea bounce when you can.

Subject a little too close to the backround for me.

I would like to see the subject to look towards camera.

Good work bouncing the lighting. If your serious about learning about taking portraits (as I am, learning, that is) try getting the 550EX off the camera with a shoe-cord and bounce off or through an umbrella. Better yet get another flash unit and slave it to the 550EX. You will be surpised as how your portraits pop. In the meantime enjoy your new purchase it was worth it wasn't it? I can't even look at my on the camera flash pictures anymore.

The flash was the same, the only difference was the lens. I hate that kit lens.

8)

The portrait of your Mom is way too harsh. I like how Bytes fixed it up and improved lighting.

What are they looking at anyway?

Really same lighting for both photos? Hum.. I am looking at their eyes and I see difference in light source.
Anyhow, I think what you need is start with basic portrait lighting and then be creative afterwards.
Also for most of the time.. shoot portrait in portarit (upright) orientation. And this applies to both of your photos.
